I turned 74 recently. Something I live by is not feeling guilty about taking it easy. In fact if I feel like doing nothing, I do nothing until I want to do something.

Maybe I’m the lucky exception here. My wife and I retired in our late 50s, and now I’m 82 and she’s 80. It’s been a wonderful ride, fortunate to not have worries about finances, etc.. I’m now a hospice caregiver for her, but we can think back not only about the years we raised our children, worked hard to save for retirement, and then enjoyed an incredible time where we traveled, volunteered, bought an old boat and shared adventures there. We recently celebrated 55 years of marriage, and now as I prepare for her inevitable loss, I can reflect back on lives we both feel were well lived.

Soon I'll be 75....have lived in various cultural settings....experienced the ups and downs of life....have been living with prostate cancer for over a decade....seen friends and loved ones exit this life....done a lot of personal soul-searching....feeling quite happy to exist until my time is up. I've come to see myself simply like a wave on the surface of the vast ocean....I co-exist with countless other waves of different shapes and sizes....we are essentially the expressions of the ONE ocean....we arise out of the ocean and we dissolve back into the ocean. The ocean is our Source of creation, we are forever one with our source of creation. So let us not get too carried away by our individuality.....we are all really the one ocean (GOD) expressing itself. They say meditation is done to help us get into a state of feeling we are all united with oneanother....not a separate being from every other being. In conclusion, let us not think too much and worry too much....everything is okay...just enjoy being alive, in unity with all creatures and the Source of Creation.

Lovely. In my 70s, I’ve never felt more content. I’m in good health, and financially reasonably secure. I live in a small apartment in a pretty place. I don’t really NEED anything, except for more friends in my new location. My kids are grown, and my aged mother finally passed. I have no more obligations to anyone. I joined two social groups when I first arrived here, but found the social gatherings kind of boring. So I go to yoga twice per week and plan to do a little sewing. The best part is that I can stay in bed in the morning. I read the news on my iPad and bring in the morning coffee. It’s fabulous just being lazy.

Thank you for your wisdom. I was born an introvert. When I was a kid my father bragged to relatives: “She’s quiet as a mouse. Not a peep out of her. You’d never even know she’s here.” Which was just the way he expected girls and women to be. So I guess we both lucked out. It isn’t that I don’t like people, I just like being alone to do my own stuff instead of having to spend hours listening to people doing THEIR own stuff. I probably have about five years left to do any stuff at all. My parent’s died in their early 80’s. I have several modest hobbies and my two cats and my son (also an introvert) who is a big help to me when I need it and we have similar interests, like history, art, literature, movies and a modicum of science. We also know when to give each other space. And speaking of space, little by little I have been divesting myself of things that I used to revere. Much of it came from my parents and late aunts who were un-cluttering their own lives. My hearing is going and I’m sorry to not be able to hear birds and peepers at the creek without cupping my hands behind my ears like an elephant, but at least it encourages people to not take up more of my time by repeating things I was likely not interested in the first time. So that’s my life. I never knew how peaceful it could be until Covid caused world wide isolation. I hope you all enjoy your seventies as much as I am enjoying mine.😊 .

I think of it as a barrier (based on my experience) in where a person goes through the withdrawal of no one comes around and the regular get togethers stops and things drop off gradually. But once you pass that barrier you start seeing other better things such as privacy and being able to make any decision and not having to compromise and if youre retired like me there is no schedule. I now see what I thought I had to have in the past as NOISE now. I think of Christmas as more of a cult than anything, and dont take me wrong Im a strong believer in Jesus Christ, but i feel the holiday became a cult for alcoholics and materialistic people

When I turned 45 I gave up alcohol. I slowly but surely learned 1 thing at a time all of these things. Each year things became more important to me that never meant anything to me. Toxic relationships were the hardest to adjust to. For some reason it came automatically but felt strange. I couldn't explain it to myself each time it happened over the years. The one thing I did know is these people brought no value to my life. They also did not value me which is the part that hurt and I never wanted to face it. One thing is for sure. You are only in charge of yourself. Don't waste any time on wanting to change another's behaviors. They too can only change themselves. Keep one thing in mind. Don't be scared that those people won't be there for you. They never were going to be. Live your best life. Realize by age what you will be able to do and don't wait to do it.

Absolutely correct, though at the age of 73 now I still wish I'd got the strength to do it all again, music is such a powerful medicine and possibly one of the best medicines there ever was, at 73 I can no longer lift those old marshalls too well but still playing, I am so grateful that my entire life has been blessed with the never ending emotions of being a guitarist, ....... I don't want to let go but I know that I have to.

Am coming on to age 73 within about a week. Live alone with my three dogs. They're the loves of my life. They're spoiled, I'm proud and happy to say. I don't miss regular human interaction, even one little bit, though I do still have a few people that put a genuine smile on my face when I see them. I like myself and my own company in what I like to think is a fair and healthy way, even with my (too) many flaws? I hope my dogs kinda like me too. We'll get on, they and I, in what remaining time together Fate chooses to give us. "Animals Forever!"

The worse reality we face can be more or less the way family or siblings lose respect for you not living up to their expectations. Respect is a one way street for them. Sometimes sheer jealousy of your relationship, marriage, home, personal success, wealth or happiness. I’ve seen it with others and I also lived it. My dad’s sage advice was simple: See problems, walk away. Don’t hate, just leave them be. You won’t change their minds or their hatred. Life is much too short to suffer fools. What we did as a child out of respect need not be totally carried on for life. Blood is not always thicker than water.

Giving is great joy, grandchildren and great grandchildren are joy proverbs 17:6 is joy to me. I agree that negativity in ones life need not be there Wether from yourself or others. The Lord has blessed me with the age of 75 years and in these years I’ve fairly well marched to the drummers playing in my head. Not seeking approval from others nor much caring what others thought of me. My wife and I been married for 56 years and fairly well been happy throughout out life we both became Christian about mid way through our journey and things really changed for us. Believing in God and that he’s sovereign changes one outlook and prospective on life. I hay farm and help my grandson row crop farm and take joy in this. Most people we know don’t understand this, but again I still listen to the drummers in my head. We have two granddaughters who are both very young in life and they are blessings to us. We have two great grandchildren a girl and little boy we don’t get to see them much. But they are still loved by us. I take great joy in walking out side in the very early morning hours of the day and looking into the heavens and knowing that the Lord is there and he’s sending his son to get his church and I’m thinking soon.

At 62 I was told I had a metastasizing prostate cancer. Although raised a Catholic by my mother and grandmother, I rarely made time to go to church until my children were born and had not been to confession since 8th grade. I was not worried about dying as much as who would take care of my daughter who suffered from physical then mental issues. I did not feel worthy to pray to Jesus as being a hypocrite. I heard on a religious radio station that Mother Mary would always help those who came to her in such situations. Having nothing to lose I tried praying to her to intervene for me. I am now 70 after surgery and 40 radiation treatments. I am helping my daughter. I pray to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and Thank them every day. I also say the Rosary everyday. During the Rosary I give a confession to God for daily and past sins. Number 2 !!!

I am 73. According to myself, Every day above ground is a holiday. Every meal is a banquet. Yesterday was a memory. And tomorrow is just a rumor. I find myself doing projects that I like to do and as I do them I use the things I've had for years such as tools materials I've had laying around and I build & make things mostly in the garage and as I go along I come across things I never used and out to the trash they go. So I'm basically getting rid and cleaning out at the same time. I know it's time to do this . After listening to this video it makes me feel pretty good knowing I'm on the right track. I have my ailments and I get frustrated that I can't do what I used to do. I will say that getting old is not for Sissy's. I thank God everyday for my very existence. There are other things that between my wife & I and the 50 years we've been married we have to be careful on decisions we make. We've had great pets all our married life and raised and loved them but when my last two dogs died ,we missed having them so we rescued two dogs that are 3 years old and we never rescued a dog before . Now I'm 73 and these two dogs broke our hearts when we saw how depressed and sad they were behind cages in a shelter that we took them home. The worry is will the dogs out live us. Will they be hurt and abandoned again? If they live 14 years or so , how old will I be makes me think that maybe I should have called it quits after my last two passed away. Then my kids told us they will never be abandoned and they would take them both along with the few dogs they have. We feel better now but my point is be careful people and don't make decisions for long terms.
