My guess is she was a 'mail order' bride (I think this because she's so much better looking than him and he doesn't have the money or personality to equal the playing field) and, as many of these women find out, they end up with controlling, socially inept men who are not the provider they were lead to believe After being in his country for years, she has much higher expectations then she had at first, as a lot of them do, and has realized that she can leave and live on her own terms without having to go back to her country, or put up with him. I see his fixation with booze as a problem and hope she continues to hide money away for her and her daughter, as my guess is she's going to need it.
