94-97 Honda Accord Power Steering Pump Leak Reseal Repair

In this video I show you how to reseal a leaking power steering pump on 94-97 Accords.
If your pump is only leaking it's more cost effective to repair it rather than replace it.
If the pump has mechanical damage it's not worth fixing and you should replace it with a re manufactured unit.
While there are aftermarket kits out there I have found them to be incomplete and they most likely won't have all of the parts you'll need. So I recommend buying the replacement parts from Honda. While they don't have a kit and you'll need to order each part piece by piece it's still relatively inexpensive.
Here are the Honda part numbers:
Rear Cover O-Ring: 91349-PY3-000
Control Valve Cover (Large O-Ring): 91346-PY3-000
Control Valve Cover (Small O-Ring):
91317-P02-003 (Made by Nok)
or
91317-P0A-003 (Made By Showa) either will work.
Inlet Fitting O-Ring: 91345-PY3-000
High Pressure Line O-Ring: 91370-SV4-000
Shaft Seal: 91249-PY3-003 (Made by Nok),
91249-P0A-003 (Made by Showa),
or 91249-P02-003 (Manufacturer unknown) any of the previous part numbers will work.

Just did this on my 2000 Accord EX 4-cyl. As mentioned in the comments below there's a few less parts, but the basic design is the same. A few less o-rings as well. I was able to get the back cover o-ring off and replaced without taking the pump 'innards' apart, which simplified it for me. There's no spring which helped. Thanks so much for posting this video.

I've owned my 94 Honda Accord EX coupe for 26 years now and done most of the work myself.. With 238,000 Miles my original power steering pump is time to be replaced. Your videos are excellent..! One question does the pulley come off that easy or will I need a puller?

They're made by Lisle part number 38220. Honestly I only use them nowadays in tight quarters where my 3/8" impact won't fit. Once you buy an impact you won't go back to hand tools for pulley removal.

Since I take it the new rack included new inner tie rods check the outer tie rods for play. With the vehicle off the ground grab the wheel on the left and the right and wiggle. Repeat the process up and down to check the ball joints. Movement in both directions may be coming from the wheel bearings. Check all of the suspension bushings for damage. If the vehicle seems to pull only when braking I'd check the brake system. You had an alignment done after the rack was swapped right?

I had a steering rack swap with a remanufactured unit. can the pump be bad? or a sensor or the preasure regulator? sometimes the steering is lose and the car changes direction without me turning the wheel. all suspension components and wheels and tires are new. any ideas? thank you very much, keep up the good work!

There is also a needle bearing in the rear cover. A shop press is the best method you could also try an arbor press. If the bearings are badly worn they will cause uneven wear on the machined surfaces of the pump in which case a remanufactured unit is the best option.

A torque wrench like the one used on those bolts must be used in one continuous rotating motion to achieve the proper torque. A tightened bolt will take MORE torque to rotate initially due to thread tension than a bolt already rotating which will give you a false reading. Dividing the torque into multiple passes would solve this issue but it's a bit of a waste on such low torque fasteners (we're not dealing with a head gasket here) but you can if you want.

***** not true about the false reading, truth is when you do what you did you smash your gasket down to a thickness thinner then a proper set gasket wit gradual tightening of bolts in steps. with phased in torquing this is mitigated. you can smash an o ring in half doing what you did . nobody likes advice these days but im just trying to help freind , not only am i a part time millwright but i made this mistake on a pressure washer . you can smash a corner down to a lower depth then you can smash the entire gasket so basically you just "BENT" the face of that pump .

i hope i can fix mine like this. 2007 mazda 3, big leak out the back of the pump......the metal part, not the two flex hoses. it flows out pretty quickly. is it possible the lower section is electronically fried? i drove home 7 miles after the pump leak happened so i assume it is fine. there is no noise or anything, just a flowing leak out the metal section.

It's not a bad idea. To get the fluid out remove the smaller return line from the reservoir and put it into a drain pan. Plug the hole in the reservoir where you removed the line. Then start the vehicle up and turn the wheel from lock to lock until the system runs dry. Shut the engine down when fluid stops flowing out of the return line you don't want to run the pump dry for too long. Refilling and repeating this a few times will get the old fluid out.

No the 90-93 Accords utilize a gear pump totally different design. 94-97 Accords use the rotor and vane style pump shown in the video. 98-02 Accords also use a rotor and vane type pump but it was redesigned which reduced the parts count. Disassembly to remove the pump shaft and o-ring replacement inside is the same. But on the outside there are less o-rings to replace due to the new design. I think the snap ring pliers are from KD tools. I bought them a long time ago.

Busho, thanks for posting this video. Again, you've saved me a load of cash. So far it's working like a charm. I think I noticed a little fluid under the pump after running the car for a bit. I'll check again today after wiping it clean to make sure it's not left over from installation. The only thing I can think of is the shaft seal. I noticed after firmly tapping it into the shaft that the side with the writing on it was flush, but it seemed there was still a gap between the metal housing and the other side (with the spring). I'm realizing it's impossible to explain in a comment. Do you know if it's leaking right off the bat or will it take a few days to notice a leak?

Make sure it's fully cleaned and recheck. If it's coming from the hole in the bottom the shaft seal is the only place it could be coming from.

Does Honda of America provide a reseal kit containing all the needed "O" rings and the one seal or do you have to look up and order each part? We have a 1997 Accord EX 4 Cylinder VTEC with about 177K. I noticed several oil wet spots on the power steering pump. The pump makes no noise. I will order the needed parts and reseal the power steering pump. Thank you for an excellent video! Your video has a great close ups on the area of dis-assembly/cleaning/parts replacement and reassembly. The exact amount of detailed instructions necessary and you don't waste time on the obvious.

Unfortunately they don't you have to order the parts separately. I've tried using aftermarket reseal kits in the past to save me the trouble of ordering all the part numbers separately from the dealer and the ones I tried we're incomplete missing critical o-rings.

Trying to torque my pulley nut, but the torque wrench is not clicking at 47 ft pds. I don't want to snap the shaft off. Used torque wrench on lug nut at same spec and it clicks no problem. Will tight as I can get it be ok?

Yes it does and there's also a needle bearing inside the rear cover to check. If the bearing is badly worn and the pump was run for an extended period of time the excessive runout can unevenly wear the machined surfaces inside the pump. If the pump rotor, vanes, or bore is worn a remanufactured unit is the only option.

Yes you can. But the other rubber parts are in the same poor condition and you may end up having to remove the pump to replace them in the future.

If you're referring to the outer ball bearing it's pretty standard you should be able to buy it from anyone who stocks bearings if you find the code stamped on one of it's sides. The Honda part number is 91048-PY3-003. If you're referring to the rear needle bearing that's 91021-148-004.

Hi, I follow the way you do it to unscrew nut pulley is clock wise, but unfortunately my pulley was dented due to force removing my civic nut pulley clock wise and at the end found out anti clock wise Arggg... anyway thanks for the video :)

The Civic uses a different style pump which is why I specified a certain model and year range of Accord in the title. Other than the pulley nut being a standard thread and a few extra components inside the Accord and Civic pumps are surprisingly similar.

there was no need to remove the rotor from the backplate since it came out intact. You could've replaced those two o-rings with the rotor assembly as it sat when you removed that backplate, thats what I did on mine just now....way easier not having to worry about losing those rotor pieces.

Removing the rotor is still a good idea so you can inspect the rotor and it's bore for debris or scoring. If it's badly scored you're better off with a rebuilt unit. I believe I neglected to mention that.

Actually the pump is different past 1997 they redesigned the it and reduced the parts count. There are less seals to replace inside the pump you still have 3 seals. On the outside the control valve plate was replaced with a threaded plug which has an o-ring on it.

The pumps while they look similar have different part numbers so they do vary somewhat. Your local dealer should be able to get you the seal part numbers.

It's fine as long as the reservoir is full before you start the vehicle. The pump won't run for too long before it primes and has a supply of oil.

I searched entire youtube. i think only you did video on power steering pump seal replacement. i found few but not detailed to this extent. you are unique.. 1) One of my friend have power steering pump growling noise(honda accord 98). when i open the cap of pump i see foaming and air bubble. 2) I tried many methods to remove air from system.. like mityvac, then dead end to dead end.. no use.. 3) Can you tell me if growling noise can come only from pump and not from rack. 4) If pump(based on this video, which part cause the growling noise).. 5) do u think if pressure testing power steering pump is ever needed. I thought of bying the tool, but dont see any one using it. 6) you have changed some of the seal that is not exposed out, (meaning it is inside the pump), so why do u want to change that, i know there should be a reason, but like to know why. 7) can a bad power steering fluid will ruin the pump, if so which part goes bad, any clue.. SORRY asked too many questions, because i found only this video in entire site that explains about power steering pump.

Air bubbles that won't purge (assuming the reservoir is full) mean's you have a leak somewhere it also causes noise from the pump. The leak can be anywhere the high pressure line, return line, rack, etc. Start easy check over the rubber return lines pay special attention to the metal hard lines they connect to they like to rust through and leak. I've never owned a pump pressure gauge never really had a use for one. You'd also need different adapters for different model years and manufacturers too which can get real expensive. Power steering fluid contaminated with debris can ruin the machined surfaces of the pump and score the machined surfaces of the rack which can cause end seal leaks. Just like contaminated oil can destroy an engine. Check out my power steering leak diagnosis video. It's for a 94-97 Accord but the layout is similar and will show where to check for leaks.

Thanks so much. Last Q, have u ever tested a regulator in alternator, i found no information about how to test. If voltage is high more than 15 or so, i assume regulator is bad, apart from this, if voltage is low, or voltage is zero.. i dont see how i can test it, yes there are so many other reason for error, like diode, slip ring, communator, so and so forth. i am more inteersted on regulator testing, any clue

sivaraj palanisamy An alternator doesn't have a commutator it has slip rings they aren't segmented like the bars on a commutator. No voltage output would suggest the brushes are worn, there's an open in the rotors field winding, the B+ fuse is blown, the regulator isn't getting power from the ignition switch, or on some designs the charging light is blown out. This is just a short list. If revving the engine or tapping the alternator gets it charging again worn brushes are the most likely culprit. A diode issue will cause a drop in output. You can check the ripple with a scope on the B+ post. You can also measure the AC ripple voltage. To test the regulator full field it. There's usually a hole to insert a screw driver into. Check the service manual for it's location. If the alternator charging current (measured with a clamp meter on the B+ post) is within specifications the regulator is bad. If the charging current is low the issue is elsewhere in the alternator. Only full field it momentarily to verify the charging current or you can overcharge the battery or damage the electrical system. Most service manuals have a flow chart that will walk you through the troubleshooting process. It's not really cost effective to repair an alternator when rebuilt units are so cheap and come with a warranty.
