@@ReignitedAuto I bought a 2011 Dodge Durango with hemi tick (not crazy, can hear the knock of one hydraulic lifter, no errors. 167miles). and so, I have already disassembled half of the engine - all that remains is to remove the heads and camshaft to understand its condition. I already have a high-pressure oil pump in my hands (according to your recommendation). and next what I need it to buy new hydraulic lifters. So the question is: should I buy with MDS or not mds - which will be better? I read many different messages from people: some immediately change everything for non-MDS systems, others simply turn it off by programmer (I have diablo but need spend for 150$). 1. Is there any point in physically removing this system? 2. Does it make sense to disable it programmatically only? 3. or just replace the broken components and leave everything as is? + Also, the solenoids of this MDS have meshes /nets - doesn’t they do an additional plug/prevent of the oil flow ? PS oil pan on durangos- it is one pease with oil receiver and oil bath. 20024/06/23 - I pulled out the camshaft and it is in good condition.
@ReignitedAuto7 ай бұрын
@@Vadim_Andr. Just some clarification on the oil pump. You'll want to install a high VOLUME pump, not a high pressure pump, they are two separate things. Secondly, for the MDS system I recommend watching this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJSnloqOjtmisKc That should give you enough information to decide for yourself how to proceed. The metal screen for the MDS solenoids does not impeed oil flow in any way. Hope that helps!

14% improvement with Hellcat pump may well be significant. My dealer shop foreman has stated to me that the supervisor or foreman trucks that spend a lot of time idling are about the only engines they see with cam/lifter failures. The workers trucks that are started and run with minimal idle time rarely have the failure. That makes sense to me since the cam lobe sans lifter are the last to get lubrication. With the advent of the low viscosity oils I postulate that the oil is bleeding off before it reaches the lifters and cam lobes. This coincides with my own experience with my own truck. Perhaps even going up to 5w-30 will help with the bleed off? I always ran 5-30 in my truck until the last oil change when I was convinced to go back to the 5-20. Followed in a couple of thousand miles by cam and lifter failure.

Just a little FYI, P01 recall has taught many techs at the dealership about pulling the pump without pulling the pan on the cars. Also, there were some Grand Cherokees that came with a plastic oil pan which has the pick-up built into the pan - the pick-up would engage the pump as the pan was tightened to the block. Also, from years of doing the P01 recall that replaced the timing chain, guide and tensioner. In order to get the pump rotated enough to get the pick-up bolt out, first take the tensioner for the timing chain out. If you have any worries about the timing chain falling off the crank gear and going out of time, you can simply run a zip-tie through one of the windows in the camshaft gear and around the tensioner side of the chain to hold it tight. Easily able to cut that off when the tensioner is back in place. One other tip, have a magnet that you can stick down into the pan to recover the pick-up mount bolt when you drop it down into the pan.

I just took apart a 2014 6.4 truck engine and it came with a 16MM thick rotor, I do not have an SRT8 oil pump right now but for sure the BGE uses the larger pump. Also the earlier 5.7 had the smallest volume of them all and didn't have lifter failure problems. My current 6.4 BGE I built from scratch for my 2011 ram 2500 I used a thin 5.7 pump and it never drops below 20PSI at idle even with 240 degree oil temp and 5w20 oil, I have another 2011 5.7 pump in my hand with the 16MM rotors, even has the 2011 casting date that very much predates the hellcat by a few years so it is definitely not been retrofitted. My guess is the thin pump came on the car 5.7 for some reason (the one you have in your video is a car engine and mine came from my stash of parts from who knows where) The 6.4 BGE and hellcat both have VVT as well as piston squirters (my hermaphrodite in my 2011 has them still but even with the smaller oil pump still has plenty of oil pressure) and I suspect that is why they both come with the larger oil pump. In my opinion the larger oil pump is not going to cure the bad lifter problem, 20 PSI is more than enough, the lifter itself is the problem and when they updated it with larger needle bearings and less shrouding from the splash oil by the skirt around the axle the rollers quit going bad.

without knowing any of this i recently bought a used one owner 2013 ram truck. actually says 0 idle hours on the instrument cluster. hearing you say this makes me happy. the engine is sewing machine quiet which is one of the reasons I bought it. he had the dealer change the oil on time every time per the car fax. and apparently didn't let it idle much. I do notice the oil psi never drops below 40 when the engine is at full temp after driving it around a while. it's about 65 when cold. seems pretty normal from all the cars I've ever owned. this truck doesn't even have a broken exhaust manifold bolt like most do it looks like this is a huge problem too. as for the tooth count, I suspect the pump can now spin at a higher rpm. thus also increasing flow rate.

My 5.7 hemi in my '14 broke a valve spring with 108,xxx miles. So, while it was down, I went ahead and also put a timing chain and Hellcat oil pump in it. I primed the oiling system before I actually tried to start it. When it was time to run the engine, I had my vehicle info display (temp, oil pressure, oil temp and transmission temp) up on dash. When the engine started, with the Hellcat pump I have 92 psi at cold start, NINETY-TWO PSI. I saw a comment on one of the videos about a guy that had installed a Hellcat oil pump and then he got a DTC code for "oil pressure high" and he said he had to buy and install an oil pressure switch/sending unit for a 6.2 Hellcat. I would say that his oil pressure switch was already going bad. I say this because the oil pressure for the 5.7 hemi and the 6.2 supercharged hemi are the EXACT SAME part number.

Fantastic video Sky, lots of great information, looking forward to part 2. Can you get the oil pump off a Ram with the pan still on...yes, but it's a pain (video evidence on my channel). You need a thin wrench, need to remove the chain tensioner, and there is a bit of prying involved. Remember that while the cranks are similar in length they did redesign the crank (changed the tapper on the snout) to accommodate the redesigned timing set, which is also a bit different. I will see if I can dig up some pictures and send them to you. Great video as always, and the new shop looks great, you just need to get the heat working...lol.

Compared the Hellcat to my original 5.7 pump, though Dodge had ripped me off because both pumps have same with pump gear width. So remembered you measured them. Both are 16mm wide. My truck was very early 09 production (#8**) . Suspect the first run was these pump then "down graded" for later production. Also compared to you latest vid with pressure tests. Mine is standard pressure. So, suspect the relief spring is the same as stock 5.7. Theoretically I should have still had higher volume. My #3 exhaust roller failed. Would run normally until under more than half load. Turns out the lifter turned 90 degrees, giving me a dead misfire, then straightened up after 10 seconds then drove normally. Very wierd. The problem with the Hemi lifters is not lubrication. The problem is the type of honing process used to hone the bore in the roller in the roller lifter. This roller bore is the outer race of an assembled needle bearing. The metal surface of this bore in the roller fails due to the type of honing processed used. This then destroys the needles, causing the bearing to fail and it’s related cam lob to wear away. Historically the bores of these rollers have been honed with the conventional honing process (the same honing type that is used on engine cylinders). When I was made aware of the Hemi roller lifter/cam/lobe problem I acquired two roller lifters from a Chrysler dealership. Upon disassembly, the bore of the roller in the Hemi roller lifter has been single passed honed. This single pass honing has process characteristics that are not good for the race of a needle bearing. Single pass honing imparts many times greater machining stress into the surface of the bearing race and as imparts a surface finish lay that has the appearance of a very fine pitch thread. This greatly increased stress in the surface of the roller bore along with the surface interaction with the needles causes this surface to fail; surface cracking a spalling occurs which destroys the needles. This single pass honing process was chosen because the capital cost of the single pass honing system is approximately 1/3 of the cost of a conventional honing system to do the same bore as Single pass honing cost per bore has typically 20% compared to conventional honing process. Moving to single pass honing was a cost cutting attempt which has gone bad. My background is as BSME and 40 years of application experience at Sunnen Products Company, which approximately 20% of our business is engine components. My email is rmoellenberg@sunnen.com

What if the hellcat oil journals/pathways are also larger than the Ram 1500 pathways , therefore allowing more flow/volume? Point is, if you add a higher volume ( idle ) oil pump, but the system is more restrictive, then you have added more pressure, but not more flow. I have no idea... But I would guess that the Hellcat engine oil pathways are also larger, and probably proportional to the higher flow pump. So, unless the oil pathway of the Ram 1500s and the Hellcat are different, then all you're doing is adding pressure to a still restrictive flow. If oil pathways are the same, then I can see how this would hep. Thanks for the time and details - much appreciated!

In the middle of doing this mod right now to a 2015 RAM 5.7. Swapping the stock oil pump for a Hellcat pump, but using the stock pump's relief spring. New Chain, tensioner and guide, new (non-MDS) cam, new lifters, pushrods, valve springs (needed for new cam). Expecting to see around 65-70 PSI oil pressure after the swap. Was getting 40 before. With only 180,000km (112,000mi) on the engine, I expected to see my original, MDS-capable cam in great shape. I was wrong. Even though I've been using Redline 5W30 with good K&N or Wix filters, there were two cam lobes already showing signs of advanced wear. Of course, they were on MDS cylinders. The lifters were all decent looking and still turned on the needle bearings. Cylinders still have good crosshatch so the shortblock is good. Heads sent to machine shop because they were off, so may as well get them cleaned up. This engine was still relatively quiet and not throwing codes, which goes to show you just how bad this design flaw is. Even if you think you're still okay with a stock hemi because it isn't ticking yet, you probably aren't.

Another huge reason to upgrade the oil pump to a hellcat oil pump is for track racing. I am looking to add a hellcat air to oil cooler (hellcat version) to decrease oil temperature for track driving. If anyone has done track driving with 6.4L hemi, they run very hot oil temp at circuit tracks. Before adding an air to oil cooler, you need more oil flow, hence install a hellcat oil pump. As an added bonus, it will help prevent hemi tick :)

The only possible solution I see (...I'm not a mechanic, but I'm not afraid to do work either), would be to place the internals of the Hellcat pump into the pre '09 pump body. I have no idea if they would fit, but it's the only solution I see. Thanks for you videos, love watching! One question, is there any risk to any part of the engine/seals etc. by increasing oil pressure across the board?
@sccarguy82423 жыл бұрын
I watched a video by Uncle Tony where he theories why these lifters go bad/cams get wiped in the hemi’s. It’s not an oil pressure problem, it’s a design issue in A) the angle of the lifter in relation to its bore, and b ) the location of the cross over pipe blocking “splash” oil from reaching the lifters at low rpm…. I’m Not sure more oil pressure would solve either issue. Perhaps oil volume, but not pressure as there is no pressure where the lifter roller rides on the cam. The reason why idle kills these motors is the lack of splash, when the motor is spinning faster the oil is getting slung harder and in more volume by the crank and more oil hits the roller.

People have reported EXCESSIVELY high PSIs, 80-90 cold start, and it is the roughly the same at WOT, idle drops to what the stock pumps pressure would be at WOT(50-55).the engine will throw a trouble code for pressure, and you run the risk of blowing a seal, or worse, some say you may even lose power. You could probably tune your idle RPMs a bit, but coming from a habitual idler, my 160k miles has 6k engine hours, and ive never had a lubrication issue, and i have to warm my car up until the tranny hits at least 130 before itll be nice to me, usually 20-30 minutes. More pressure doesnt necessarily mean more oiling, since reportedly the SRT/cat have different methods of lubrication than the 5.7L.

You can “easily” (with a small pry bar) pull the pickup tube out of the oil pump and remove the pump without completely removing the oil pan, but I did have to lower it (left two rear bolts in a couple treads and pulled the front of the pan down) in order to get to the bolt on the pickup tube due to the oil baffle/windage tray.

@dwaynehubbs4907 one thing to keep in mind though, I still haven't figured out why some vehicles are seeing a low oil pressure code after installing the Hellcat pump. It does appear to be related to the MDS system because some viewers have told me that if you turn MdS off it won't set the code. So take that as you will. 👍

Just use an aftermarket high volume standard pressure pump for the 2003-2008 Hemi or you can try a standard volume. Not hard to ship the relief spring or replace the relief/bypass spring with a higher pressure spring.
@The3chordwonder3 жыл бұрын
Because the entire pump is pushed out so far, I'd see if you can get the timing cover back on, even if the splines don't fit. If that does work, you could possibly rough cut a 2nd oil pump drive, and weld it onto the existing one to get the extra length. If you did that though, I'd be concerned if the balancer would press on far enough. Another idea is to port the existing pump. HeadflowInc has a great set of videos where he ports LS pumps and adds shims to the pressure spring. The pre-08 hemi pump doesn't have a threaded cap on the pressure regulator like the LS does, instead it is a pressed cup, retained by a roll pin. If you drive out the roll pin with a punch, you can get the pressed cup out with a little bit of work. Ideally, you'd want to tap for a plug (I wouldn't be surprised if the LS plug would fit since the pumps are so similar). But even if you can't tap a plug, you can still shim the spring, press the old cup back in and re-secure with the roll pin. Between raising the pressure on the spring, and porting the internal passages, you might get enough out of the stock sized pump. Even drilling the output hole larger might work as well. I didn't port mine, but I did shim the spring, and I did get more idle pressure.

Yes, this is the very truth, Chrysler did not install a high enough volume oil pump in the 5.7 Hemi Engine and from reading I found out that the 6.2 Hemi oil pump fits the 5.7 hemi as well. The problem is that the older hemi blocks were made differently, as the cam shafts of the new blocks were actually put further apart form the crank, so distribution of oil is much less than the older versions of the block. From reading, this is what I have understood. The oil has more of a distance to travel and doesn't lubricate enough on the cam shaft compared to older versions. The fix is to install a higher volume oil pump on the engine block to increase oil pressure, thereby reducing wear on the camshafts. I would suspect that this would also have an effect on the piston rings and valve guides as they would get more oil pressure circulation as well, increasing the life span. Another problem has been that the exhaust manifold bolts are notoriously able to break during heating/thawing, because the aluminum heads heat/thaw differently than the block its self. From reading is to buy sport tuned header shorty's to mount up to the original exhaust or sport tuned long headers with redoing the exhaust system. The most less expensive way is to buy shorty's that are sport tuned. This seems to solve the exhaust manifold bolt breakage problems from reading. From reading, these are the major issues with Hemi Engines. Some older years in past recent generations had valve seats dropping into the cylinder on Gen 4. They seemed to have fixed the issue of valve springs loose in Gen 5.

hey guys, this is for everyone who wants to do this swap, just did this in my 2014 dodge charger pursuit. ended up calling melling oil pumps for recommendation because they make the pumps for dodge and the 5.7 hemi. now i live in a cold state and i was running into the issue of actually having too much oil pressure. stock oil psi numbers were 30-35 psi operating temp/50-55 crusing/ 60 cold start. with the 6.2 pump i was seeing 90 psi on cold start, going into the territory of blowing the rear main, and 35-45 operating temp idle, and 70-75 psi crusing. i also ran into some CELS for “oil pressure too low” and ended up being too high for the MDS system and shutting it off. this it just to warn everyone, so you don’t go through what I went through end up putting the car back together, and having to take it apart to put the stock oil pump back on. happy to answer any other questions
@ReignitedAuto3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear you were having trouble Frank. I admit though, I'm trying to figure out how having high oil pressure would blow out the rear main seal? Oil pressure and crankcase pressure are two different things.
@frankambrose47643 жыл бұрын
so that is a absolutely true statement, and i thought the exact same thing. according to the guys at melling, and a different person on the forum who did the exact same thing to his charger, for some reason or another, it is possible because he swapped for the hellcat pump he blew out his seal. so the first thing i did when i had the hellcat pump on my car was taking of the oil cap and seeing if i had any blow by, and nothing. so then i thought to myself, if all the oil passages are through the block, how would it possibly blow the rear main seal, and i couldn’t really think of a way, but i guess it is possible.but what did it for me was the combination of the CEL, and the possibility of the seal, i decided to just bit the bullet and put the stock pump back on the car, and surprisingly enough, i believe that they actually made some changes to the newer 5.7 oil pumps because i am seeing different, and better oil pressure numbers on a 2021 oil pump. operating idle pressure is 38-40psi, crusing is 55-60, and cold start is 65, so i’m pretty happy with the new stock pump, and my MDS works now with no CEL.

It only had 52k miles/3600 hrs. on engine and great CarFax record for maintenance with one private owner. After only 400 miles of me driving, check engine light comes on yesterday, my code reader shows Misfire #3, and mechanic then finds that I have lifter/cam failure. I am being quoted $5k plus to fix. Should I go ahead and fix and put Hellcat oil pump in (as long as inspection doesnʻt show metal shavings in the intake) or get a new engine entirely? Thanks for your help and advice. Really thought I did my homework on this buy and feeling pretty crushed by this news.
@ReignitedAuto Жыл бұрын
Appreciate the kind words! I can say that if there's no metal in the OCV screen I would have no concerns about just replacing the cam and lifters, I've done quite a few over the years and haven't had any come back. As for the Hellcat pump, I've been getting some reports from people that it is intermittently seeing a low oil pressure check engine light, which is of course exactly opposite what is actually happening. It seems to be related to the MDS system because if you turn the MDS off it doesn't set the code. However if you don't want to mess with any of that then the stock pump would be fine.

Completely different engine but still a Chrysler. I replaced the rockers and lash adjusters in my 04 4.7 with later ones. The difference was the size of the orifices on the rockers, the old ones had oil spray holes about 1/8" in diameter which allowed a huge internal oil pressure leak, 16 of them actually. I had hot oil pressure of around 7 psi at idle and a lot of lifter clatter upon start up. Replacing them with updated ones, I believe it was 05 when they were changed. The squirter hole was reduced in diameter to about 1mm in diameter and the lash adjusters had the feed hole moved up to put about half of it in the bore diameter itself. These 2 changes alone raised my hot idle oil pressure from around 7 psi to around 16 psi which significantly reduced my cold start clatter. I would replace the pump however one is not offered and this Hemi pump will not fit mine.

I've had to change my cam and lifters. Recently, I notice when my engine is hot and at idle, my oil pressure can be as low as 16PSI. Only 49PSI at high RPM's. I think that low oil pressure is the cause. My water pump started leaking, so I figured it's time to increase the oil pressure. I'm in the middle of putting everything back together right now. I've had my dash show "wrong oil weight" when it was time for an oil change. I guess the oil pressure went too low, less than the 16PSI that I have now. You would think the manufacturer would understand this low oil pressure issue and fix it. But then they get less repairs in the shop, so they go with low oil pressure on purpose.
