There's nothing wrong with riding any bike that works. This one included. Just don't try to beat it up on trails and you should be good. Enjoy it and stay safe!

yep very true, and if you watch some general maintenance videos on here you will be able to keep it working long after your friends bikes have fallen apart and maybe even earn some money to buy a better bike some day if you enjoy riding.

while mental state does play a factor in all things a cheap bike is bound to fail under any real torture. as a gravelgrinder they will last ( smooth dirt roads and railroad beds ) but i would not under any circumstance take one on the trails i do or race the bike hard like i do my KONA. ive seen so many dept store bike failures riding with my friends, many of which caused a bad crash even at slower speeds. biking is a sport that can be loved or hated depending on the bike, if you buy a 150$ dept store bike that has a ton on little hiccups and bad brakes with stiff suspension. your not going to feel confident or comfortable on the trails. if you save a bit more and buy a used bikeshop bike for 200-600 you can find some amazing deals and rare gems in that range that will be far more enjoyable. the biggest headache will be removed entirely, INCOMPATABILITY. dept store bikes use alot of narrow parts and odd sizes that you just cant find replacements for BECAUSE the store plans it that way. if you cant fix it you need a new one. honestly if you cant afford a 200 + $ bike you would be better off finding a 20 year old rigid frame GT outpost or Giant boulder for 40$, they are built like tanks and a rigid will teach you alot of bike handleing skills that will be usefull later when you can afford a real nice bike.

I have had this bike for over 1yr... I use it to ride on paved trails, some sand and gravel paths. I live on the beach so no mountains. So far I have changed the tires to hybrids, replaced the pedals with alloy and upgraded the worn out grips. Granted it's not the best bike but neither is it a deathtrap. If you know it's limitations it is a good method of transportation, beats walking! If it's so crappy why do people try to steal it all the time?😁 I have had no mechanical issues in a year of use... It is what It is.

What kills me is that you can buy a decent quality (if older) mountain bike for about $200 at used bike shops, and the craftsmanship of a 90's Univega or Raleigh rigid is still worlds ahead of comparable department store bikes.

Cat G to be fair though. when I was younger my parents didn't have much money and couldn't afford even a cheaper entry level one around $500. So yes I had a Wal-Mart bike. I rode it to places as transportation and took it on trails. I enjoyed it. not everyone who lives cycling has money to shove out in this commercial of a sport/hobby. even when I got my first job it took a little over a year before I got a quality bike. which was a Fuji mountain bike. It was entry level but it was good and even did some Xterra Triathlons and MTB races with it. I had it 7 years and it finally broke down to where its too expensive to repair. And now I'm stuck with a Target MTB bike until I can afford a good one again which may be some time. there's no reason to put down people with lower end bikes. luckily I do have a rode bike still, a Trek Madone-which I saved for about half a year to get-cutting down so many expenses and starving myself at times so I had a bike I could race with. I don't see that as worth it now though.

I got this bike and converted it to 700c rims. It's like my hybrid suspension 700c road bike now lol. It cost $98 and the 700c rims cost like $55 online so in total for $153 it's a VERY comfy road bike thanks to the suspension and since no abuse on trails it surprisingly lasted a good 5 years which makes sense since this video is 4 years old and I got the bike like 5 years ago and commenting this today in 2021.

I bought a Next Ultra Shock from Walmart a few years back and I'm very happy with it. I don't ride trails or mountains like the young kids. I chose this bike for the suspension and just wanted a comfortable bike to ride around the neighborhood. First thing I did was remove and throw away the skinny tires and wheels and derailleur system and installed a Shimano 3-speed and single front sprocket with balloon road tires. The axe handle seat also got tossed and replaced with a wide comfortable cushioned seat. The straight handle bar was replaced with a regular cruise bike set. I topped it off with fenders from Beach Bikes. Now I have a comfy cruiser that's easy on my 75 year old body and I love it. My riding "suit" is my regular work clothes and my helmet is a Tractor Supply baseball cap. I chuckle when I see these pencil necks in the rubber suits and pumpkin seed helmets on two pound bikes but I never see them smiling.

I'm 40 and when I was a kid a department store bmx bike like Team Murray or something was actually pretty decent. They still made Kmart bikes like huffy and Murray in the USA then. They weren't good bikes by any stretch BUT you didn't have to worry about getting hurt on one because it fell apart riding it around the block. LOL.. these modern Walmart bikes in the $100 range are just ridiculous. I can remember my dad buying me a $100 range team Murray bmx when I was a kid. It was heavy as lead but tough as nails. It was $100 in 1986 dollars though.

KevCentral hahaha! Funny you should say that! I rode mine for years as a kid, then handed it down to my nephew. He rode it throughout his childhood and his mom literally ran over it multiple times when he left it laying behind her van. When he outgrew it my brother was going to throw it out so I took it back and it's sitting in my basement to this day. I plan to put a new back wheel on it since it was the only thing bent from the last time she ran over it. Hahaha

The moral of the story is, the bike is garbage, anything you buy from a big store, Walmart, Target, etc. Is going to be junk on the trails, you can talk good about your Wally world bike all you want, but I guarantee you that bike wouldn't survive on a blue or black trail, we purchase high dollar bikes for a reason but for cheap bikes to have trail ready printed on them is just simply not true and I'm quite surprised someone hasn't sued them by now.

There is a problem when your parent then says "well go get a job and buy a nice bike yourself". Sure I'll rebuild a car transmission for something I want, but kids may not be able to get a job. Mowing lawns is probably the best way, but easy jobs aren't always around. At least you learn how to work on bikes if you get a Walmart bike, that's a good skill to have.

I've got a cheap mountain bike made by those Hyper brand or whatever it is. Its a hyper havoc. I periodically ride many of my local trails and this cheap bike has done really good for me. The cheap tires wore out in no time and the front suspension is like wet noodles. I try to maintain it so it will last and so far it has. The only significant problem I've had with it is the bearings in the crank almost completely binding up. Cleaning it out and lubricating them fixed that problem. So far I enjoy it and it has been a good bike.

I have the exact same bike and have not experienced any of those problems yet. I've been on some trails and jumped it off my homemade ramp and everything is fine with the bike. I tend to be really ruff with the bike and I've jumped it and everything and it's all fine. I must have gotten a good version of the bike. I'm still going to tighten the bolts just in case 😅

I just bought a $4,500 2018 rocky mountain thunderbolt carbon 50. People criticize me for spending that much, and some hate me for it. I crashed it one time, rode it right off the side of a mountain. I was fine, luckily. My handlebars did not adjust themselves, my brakes didnt squeak, I was not scared to ride it, it was just fine, even the paint didnt scratch. I buy something because it is tough, not cheap. I do also understand sombody who does not have much money and buys a bike like this one in the video, it is a great bike. Like the guy said, it was not designed for tough mtb trails. It only matters that you are on a mtb. Happy trails!

I bought a couple of Walmart bikes. Mongoose got shots. I guess you could call them mountain bikes. They were $95 each before tax. I thought it was a great deal! So me and a friend of mine went to a bike trail and started to ride the bikes. My friend lost control and fell on the asphalt, got some road rash! The chain on the bike was loose. We tried to tighten the chain but no luck. I just said to take it easy and not to push the pedals too hard. So we went riding around the lake. My bike was ok, but the other bike had a loose chain and loose handle bars. But it was still an ok deal. Just make sure all your nuts and bolts are tight! Thanks for this video!

Dept. store bikes are great for people who want cheap commuters that are likely to be stolen, but I think it's somewhat irresponsible to make them LOOK like real mountain bikes, when they clearly can't tolerate that kind of use. My dad is no dummy, but even he questioned why my old (mid 90's) rigid Trek would be preferable to the "full suspension" department store bike he pulled out of my grandpa's garage. People don't seem to immediately understand that zero suspension is actually a lot better (and safer) than garbage suspension, robbing $$$$ from other more basic components.

Well put. I am in total agreement. These bikes have their place in absence of alternatives, but it most certainly isn't on the rough terrain the affixed tags claim.

Obviously, you aren’t going to get a 5k bike for $500 new, but depending on what you want to do and how you ride and also how the bike is equipped, it may be that a cheaper bike that meets your needs is just as good. What good is it to buy a Ferrari if you only drive in a city with 35mph speed limits and 4-way stops every block?

Wait this is great, a MTB wth not only vertical but also horizontal suspension. Thats how you get the best traction ^^ Actually the small travel distance is not that much of a problem, as long as you can choose a hard enough setting for it. What frightens me more is the bending and low stability in the fork. It is completly possible to ride many trails without suspension at all if you know how to. But if you cannot control the bike because it bends under you or the handlebars becoming loose (not to talk about the bike being likely to break if you attempt to jump over anything) it is really unsuitable for any situations that require instant feedback, not only on trails but also if you are riding fast in the city

Why do mountain bikers ride like they can't wait to get to the end of the trail and be done? I have a $100 Walmart mountain bike, so does my wife, and we love them. The difference is when we ride, we ride slow. We take in the sights, the scenery, and enjoy being away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a while. For the casual biker who enjoys spending time on the trails these bikes are ideal. Ours have suited us well for 12+ years and are still going strong.

I had a... I don't know what it was, except the fact that it's name was a random jumble of numbers and letters. It did really well on some rough roads until the frame bent on a gentle slope. Most cheap things are a half-assed attempt at making something good, and are full of design holes and poor precision, like the company had a vision and no motivation in its free to make it properly. It takes a bit of effort, attention and understanding (i.e., the skewer bolt wouldn't tighten any further on yours because the skewer wedge probably needed some grease so it could slide in the fork tube) to get a cheap thing working as well as the next step up. All the parts off my old jdi3y29rhri or whatever are on a frankenbike and still work after six years.

I got an $80 Walmart "mountain bike" and it survived over 5 years of repeated mountain biking trails. I was constantly having to tighten the handlebar bolts, and I always kept the bike in one gear because the derailleurs were never in proper alignment. The brakes never worked either. The handlebar situation was ridiculously unsafe. If I went over any kind of bump, the handlebars would come loose, and I would have to stop to tighten them.

+Patrick Olar Watch the other videos on the bike. It would likely be ok for street riding, but on an actual mountain bike trail it will not last long at all. IMO it's a dangerous bike on a trail. That flexible and very limited travel (12.7mm, I measured) front suspension is just too flimsy for an actual MTB trail. It does look great though, and the tires were actually decent considering the price of the bike.

let's be fair, if you want to make something look bad it's easy. When you said downhill trail I thought you would be punishing the bike, I could have ridden my grandmothers Brompton folder through there with no problems and or failures. The brake skipping the rim was poor adjustment, the bolt on the stem was backed out in the high speed set up at the start of the video and not checked just tightened so I can only blame the tool with the tools. The fact it continues to slip the same distance the same direction, bit odd?
@KevCentral
@KevCentral 7 жыл бұрын
+Richard Shields wrong. The bike is inferior and the slipping of the handlebars wasn't the same distance. It actually got worse as I rode. The brake was adjusted fine. It skipped below the rim because it's inferior metal and bends too easily fro heavy pressure. The same thing happened on another cheap bike a few weeks later. But thank you for the uninformed observation and accusations.
@captainchaos3053
@captainchaos3053 7 жыл бұрын
KevCentral Well I guess maybe not being there to see it happen I could be misinformed but I still think it's unlikely. That type of bar stem has been tried and tested for many years and the brakes slipping under the rim without being destroyed by the amount of flex it would require to allow that to happen. I don't know, at no point in the video are you hammering the bike.
@KevCentral
@KevCentral 7 жыл бұрын
+Richard Shields I appreciate the response. You're welcome to come here and ride the trail on a similar bike. I don't know if you've experienced these bikes in person before, but that stem design is anything BUT tried and tested on a trail. On a trail, IMO, it's downright dangerous. Brakes did what they did. I can't honestly say that in the Hyper episode that they were or weren't used hard when that happened as it has been over a month since that happened. When it happened on the Pacific it WAS being heavily applied and the rider weighed considerably more. That said, no bike should allow the brake pad to move under the rim lip regardless of the lever force applied.
@captainchaos3053
@captainchaos3053 7 жыл бұрын
KevCentral Well the stem design is very old and I had many bikes with that system with no problems of any sort, but they do not self align! If you slacken and move the bolt it must be correctly set before torqued. The brakes are also a very old design, the pads must be set per the position when applied and the opposite lever is the counter force to stop the rim from moving. The problem you had I have seen many times and it's from poor adjustment. My old rock hopper had that type of brakes and stem with no problems. ps that bike was clocked at 58mph at spa back in 1996 just before front tyre tore and both the bike and I ended up broke.
@KevCentral
@KevCentral 7 жыл бұрын
+Richard Shields I don't know what to tell you other than I've had countless bikes with the same brakes. Up until recently I've never tried a $99 version on a trail. The problems start almost immediately. You're also comparing a Specialized to a $99 Walmart bike. I think you need to get one of these and experience them yourself. The brake pads start cracking on these within the first few minutes on a trail. Like I said before, if you're ever in the area you're more than welcome to prove me wrong. I'll even buy the bike for the experiment. I'll also bring along a first aid kit and pre-plan the best evacuation route to increase your chances of survival.

When I was 12, I won a 'mountain bike' from All About Sports at the Newport, KY store. I was 12 and did BMX trails with a Haro-based frankenstein and freestyle with a Dyno Compe, I was 70lbs and barely fit on the 26" bike. 2 hours on a forest trail resulted in both wheels bent, broken front brake carrier, bent handlebars, and broken rear brake handle. Walked it home with aspirations of fixing it in the morning. Before we worked on it, I popped my pegs on it and tried basic platform jumps and landing. Jumping off my friend's 3' high retaining wall onto a gravel drive SNAPPED the frame right where the head tube met the top and down tubes. The case for the crank bearings also failed and no longer spun. What a piece of crap.
