STORY
In the heart of Belgium, a magnificent castle stood tall, built-in 1633 by a noble family who left their mark on the history of the place. However, the castle changed hands over the years, and in the 19th century, it was purchased by the influential British Atkins family, known for their success in the antiques and art business. The Atkins family had grand plans for the castle, hoping to expand their operations into Belgium. Christoph Atkins and his sister Marie-Noel grew up within these walls, surrounded by the grandeur of their family's wealth and success. But as time passed, their paths diverged. Marie-Noel graduated from university and yearned for a different life, so she moved to Israel to pursue her studies of law. Meanwhile, Christoph took over the family business and expanded upon his father's work. He was a man of many passions and pleasures, with many lovers and an appetite for travel. He led a lavish lifestyle, traveling the world for his business and living life to the fullest. For many years, the castle was alive with the sounds of the Atkins family's busy lives. But then, in 2017, the castle fell silent. It was abandoned and left to the elements, leaving the locals to wonder what had become of the once-great Atkins family. The whereabouts of Christoph and Marie-Noel are unknown, and the abandoned castle holds many secrets. The mysteries of this forgotten place have yet to be uncovered, and the story of the people who once called it home remains dramatic and intriguing. What happened to the Atkins family? What secrets do the castle's walls hold? These questions remain unanswered, leaving the castle as a haunting reminder of a bygone era.

Imagine back in the 1600s when that castle was surrounded by nature and dirt paths and trees everywhere. People getting around by horse and by foot. Today, you see residential homes and cemented roads right next to it and cars driving by. What a time warp!

An amazing tour, Lesley! You have inspired me to do some research again! It appears that Christopher Atkins, the owner, bought this chateau in Wallonia (southern Belgium) in 1999 as a restoration project. He owned 3 antique Galleries in central Brussels between 1973 and 2003, specialising in 17th to 19th century furniture from England, France, and Holland. He was highly respected - senior Consultant to the Royal Chamber of Belgian Antique Dealers for 20 years. But by 2010 he had set up an art gallery in Beijing [Atkins & Ai Gallery] with the beautiful Emily de Wolf Pettit. The restoration project never got completed . . . . a couple of details of interest - the baby grand piano was made in London by Marshall & Rose, and dates about 1930. The metal coat of arms you found is the Royal Coat of Arms of England, supported by a lion and a unicorn - and the framed picture is of Queen Mary, mother of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

There is also a legend about a French nobleman who was imprisoned in the Bastille. It is believed ge invented the game in the 18th Century. Although historically the 1st depiction of the game and its rules date back to 1687 in France. 🇫🇷 🎉

Out of all the oldest abandoned castles you have shown us, this one appears to be the most solid structurally and should be a priority to be fully restored to its past grandeur! All the art, antique furnishings, stonework and millwork inn the castle is enough to overflow a museum, the castle could easily become a destination resort.

What a wonderland this castle is :) I can't believe a multi decade castle is in such good shape. I was blown away by the Arms room with all of its sculpting on the walls especially the village with the surronding wall. If that picture was Christophe, he certainly looked like a pleasant gentleman. The Paintings are so nice. This place is so vast and grand. Everything is just a work of art there. Yes it means the roof is probably very solid. But it was probably bought in 1999 only (see above) to restore by the family mentioned which is not that long ago.

Not so uncommon to enter home or buildings in the 1600in Europe.The University of Paris/ Sorbonne was build in 1150..may churches are older too, Notre Dame in Paris was bulit in 1163. Your videos transport me to that place. I see that you are a very respectful person with the place and its architecture that you really enjoy. I have to admit as a technical architect and a student of interior design, it makes me very sad to see places abandoned and decaying with the passage of time. But then I think that each of these buildings has a story to tell and that if they had not been abandoned we would never have known them. Thank you very much for your excellent videos. Since Christopher Atkins first established his gallery in the centre of Brussels, which grew to three galleries on the Chaussée de Charleroi and Avenue Louise from 1973 - 2003, he has been known for his considerable dynamism and depth of knowledge. A specialist in the purveyance of 17th, 18th and 19th century English, French and Dutch furniture, as well as ethical restoration, Christopher was widely recognized for his expertise:- as the Senior Advisor to the Royal Guild of Flemish Antique Dealers from 1980 - 1990, Senior Consultant to the Royal Chamber of Belgium Antique Dealers for twenty years and requested to vet dealers for major international fairs, for instance Brussels International Fair. Christopher’s profession also allowed him to enter into ethical restoration as well as real estate where there was several common denominators. Throughout his real estate projects, undertaken either for his own company or for clients, Christopher was consulted for conservation projects, including Stonehenge in the UK and he dedicated years to the faithful and painstaking restoration of his historic property in Wallonia, Southern Belgium.

That game is called Chinese checkers as far as I know. That weapons room is so interesting to look at. I've not seen any plaster work that resembles that work. Very beautiful. I think it would be amazing to see the towns people get together and set each room up with furniture from within the home to make it look like a grand home again. And with all the other pieces of furniture to be auctioned off to get the roof and windows restored. Then turn it into a museum or bed and breakfast. I'd love to work at something like that. Hi Lesley, In Belgium started 1633 & left in 2017...So sad someone needs to Restore this Beautiful Castle!! I Love all the Beautiful Antique Furniture & Paintings!! Now from the very start entering thru the basement, had a sink & a man`s toilet! The Arms room was so Unique!! Never saw a Iron Waffle Maker, by the Fireplace!! Love All the Fireplaces!! 2 Basements & 3 Floors!! Love all the bedrooms, the first room was small, but Bed was big! Upstairs: I don`t think the stroller was for child to use, I think it was for baby! Wow 500 acres of Land & Castle!! You talked about Cairo, Egypt ..in America my state Illinois, is Southern Illinois is Cairo, Illinois...lots of vacant property there! I love the way those old stairs were made. The rise is very short and the run was very,very wide making the stairs much easier to walk up and down. I can see that the stairs would take more space in the house or building, but they were so much easier to walk up and down.

The picture above the piano of as you said “ woman with a crown” is Queen Mary , grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II, great 👑grandmother of King Charles III. The wooden board game is called Marble Solitaire or (time 16:38) Peg Solitaire. It is a single player game. This 33 hole version with marble balls was apparently attributed to nuns and priests to entertain themselves whilst living a solitary life.🙏🌟

the game is solitaire.. fairly common. starting with all holes populated except the one in the middle, the goal is to remove all the pegs or marbles , leaving one in the middle. you move by hopping over a piece to an empty hole, removing the piece you have "hopped" over. spent many a wet week in caravan in Devon playing this game.

This was worthy of two parts as there was so much of interest. I would hope you would return and do a more in depth exploration of the contents before all is lost. I'm going to watch it again just to view the wonderful furniture. The photos were amazing...and surely worth more time spent. Please please show us more. The stone in the basement is "bluestone" (blauwe hardsteen), not marble. Bluestone is abundant and mined in the Belgian Ardennes and in the province Hainout. Bluestone is much cheaper than marble.

That's really interesting to me. Aside from the geological and artistic aspect of it, my husband's great grandmother's maiden name was Bluestone. I can't wait to show him this.

That game with the " marbles".is what is called Chinese checkers. That would be an antique game of Chinese Checkers. What an amazing place. And no family left to get the important things like photos, documents letters. Very sad but this guy had an interesting lifestyle.

Oh my goodness! This castle is simply majestic and splendid! Really old with real marble pillars, not faux marble like the US. The Arms room is special. I wonder were the original actual arms ended up? Some of the antiques are really good pieces. Dining room table in lovely condition. Wow! The prison cell is so cool! Got my imagination running now...I think the entrance/exit to the outside (next to prison cell) food and wine dispatch and receipt. I notice there are many rugs on the floors. Some appear to be priceless Persian Rugs! Leslie, could you also pay attention to the carpets?
