I am so thankful for the McCann methods. My 10 month old lab has been super rowdy and obnoxious especially with my kids ever since we brought him home around 10 weeks old. Due to some unforeseen family issues we are getting a very late start on even the basic commands. I have learned so much in the last month of watching these McCann training videos. I wish I knew sooner how quickly dogs respond to training. In less than a week of better management (giving him way less freedom in our home) and with just a few minutes of training each day he has already learned sit, down, stay and is sleeping quietly in his crate. He also hasn't jumped on my kids in several days and just today he actually listened to me when I told him to 'stay' at the top of the basement stairs. I am blown away by how quickly he is learning! I have signed up for the Life Skills course and will be starting lesson 1 this week. Thank you so much!!

Nice basic mechanics info that is so important. Bringing the reward up to your face before giving it to him does two things: Looking at your eyes helps build your trust-filled relationhip with him. @@rosemarygavin3121 We have a Double Doodle (mother Goldendoodle/Father Labradoodle who was selected from the breeder's second litter of 10 for the traits I needed in a service dog) who is now15 months old and 75 pounds. We've gone through advanced obedience but got a lot more from the McCann's. We did my service dog training and as the youngest in the class he still passed with flying colors. As I write this I am sitting on my couch in Tirana, Albania where we are spending the next year to launch our roving retirement throughout Europe. We left Portland, Oregon early this past Sunday morning, flew through Seattle, JFK, Rome (15 hour layover and not allowed to leave the terminal. Our pup never did pee or poo on the floor growing up and they had no pet relief areas inside so he wouldn't consider going on the wee pads and held it for over 24 hours), and into Tirana 40 hours later. For each of the four legs he was perfect on the floor in the cabin. The last 90-minute flight they gave our bulkhead seats with extra legroom to a family with a baby and put us in this little commuter plane in two seats together and my husband and I literally had to rest our feet on Sebastian. He still was a rock star. He did hit a wall when we had to deplane in Tirana where it's such a small airport that we had to go down the metal steps to the tarmac. If I didn't have his service harness to help him down the stairs by literally holding him all the way down he'd have not managed. He was very scared on the shuttle bus when everyone crammed on around him and they were pushing and shoving him all over. But all the while he never made a peep. The crew and passengers on each leg were so incredulous of his behavior they all kept coming by to take pictures. So I've given you a very long winded response but wanted to make the point that even if you have a high energy dog and it takes a big investment, that work pays off by gifting you with a dog that is so impressive in public that even in the park people come up to take photos.

I just brought home a 6 month mini sheltie with no house or crate training, so we're starting with a schedule and basics, these 5 minutes/5 feet videos really help living in a small apartment and having a chronic pain condition. She passed the SD temperament test so the goal will be CGC and SD public access. :-)

I love your videos, so glad I found you! My puppy is really tiny and I use really small bits for treats but I'm concerned he's getting too many treats. Mac here is awesome and getting lots of treats but he's much bigger so in wonder if you treat differently for different size dogs? I use teeny bits of deli chicken meat. Is this good?

I just watched this video all the way through. My family has a little Maltese puppy called Benedict Waggo (Benny for short) and he is the sweetest little thing, but we've neglected his training a little. He's not big enough to cause any injury to us, and I'm sure he wouldn't try to intentionally, but I still feel a bit guilty about his manners sometimes. Recently I've been watching videos and taking notes, and I think this one might be helpful. I will have to write down the tips or whatever you call them!

Have to say you are a god send to pet dog owners trying to it right I took my 17 month GSD to her intermediate thinking she would shine as I trained though play and treats she hated it a hit and a miss whether she would work for me my dog trainer said she had no respect for me I was so upset I now take her to different places and do her commands and stay I can see she is very nervous at first always scanning but with a bit of patience she gets there at home she is a perfect companion thanks for your free time and lessons sorry it's so long

If you’re finding that your having trouble getting your dog’s focus, switching to a higher value reward that your dog absolutely LOVES is helpful. What about a 150lb 1.5 - 2yr old great dane rescue that you can't easily maneuver back into place? She came to us knowing sit, lay down, and shake, but only for a brief second. Won't stay in position. She's also animal reactive and reactive to tones in voice when my teenager gets huffy and puffy with me. I need her to stay when asked and also to be able to call her off when she's going after my son when he's copped an attitude about something. It'd also be great to not have to keep her separated from the 5 other animals in my household, bc it makes it hard to function here!

Great video, but I am having difficulty with my older collie now that we have a new puppy. She will stay well until released, even when I throw her frisbee. My puppy only listens when I have food. If he’s going for my slippers I try giving him an appropriate toy but he continues to jump on me and go for the slipper. He will do sit, leave it when I have a treat but will keep going back to the slipper. When I try to go back to treats to get him to stop he will lose focus and move away. Any ideas? We just can’t walk without him grabbing our shoes or pants.
