A Baby Orangutan Is Born At The Zoo

A new Bornean orangutan was born at the ‪@ZooBarcelona‬ in May. The baby is in perfect health and has already been seen clinging to its mother and breast feeding. This is the third daughter of Jawi, an orangutan also born at the Zoo twenty-five years ago, and Karl.
The new baby brings the number of orangutans in the Zoo complex to seven. This species is in critical danger of extinction in its natural habitat, owing to deforestation in Borneo and Sumatra through the felling of trees and cultivation of palm oil.
The Barcelona Zoo Foundation, in conjunction with the Borneo Nature Foundation (BNF), carries out conservation, awareness and education programmes among the local population in a bid to save this primate. This work is carried out in addition to the new model for the Zoo to actively contribute to conservation, scientific research and dissemination of fauna and its natural habitats, with a special emphasis on Mediterranean fauna and species in danger of extinction, under sustainability criteria and always caring for the welfare of animals.

I love these beautiful ,gentle people so much. They're incredible and they certainly don't deserve how they have been treated in the wild. Please read labels and refuse to buy anything containing palm oil. Please! It's a small sacrifice for us but means life or death to orangutans.

I have never understand that ither. In the wild they don't go to find a rock to have their baby. N in other zoos they may be inside but they give them straw or something to make a bed.

It’s cracking me up the way she’s playing with him and jostling him about and kissing him too. She loves him so very much, it’s plain to see. I normally hate seeing animals in zoos but if this keeps orangutans from being extinct then it just has to be done. I wish they’d be given huge, protected enclosures though so it’s more like nature.

It's because of us they are suffering without their natural homes. We "take" from them, then, we "give" to them at their zoo home. I cannot imagine the losses this species has suffered. Why, does it get this far when it doesn't have to be? It's exemplified all over the world, this thoughtless greed that causes so much suffering and damage. These are beautiful, intelligent, gentle feeling beings that have rights too.

I love how she holds it's head to protect it from it's head hitting the floor as she rocks It. I think only great apes do this rocking like human's do. Then there's all the hugs and kisses! She was even nice enough to let the other female look at and touch it! What a wonderful mommy!!!! She makes every gentle movement like a beautiful expression of love. This is why we have to do more to stop these monsterous poachers from the mommas for bushmeat and those precious babies for the pet trade. Look how their bond and closeness is and then have these wicked and evil people come and rip the two of them apart, especially while the baby is screaming, biting and doing all it can to get away!!! How can people's hearts be so hardened, so cold and evil? ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! THESE PEOPLE MUST BE STOPPED! LIKE NOW!!! I'm giving all I can to help the orangutans and all the great apes too? Even if it's $1.00 a day? It doesn't sound like much but yours plus someone else's really does help. SO SORRY!😂 I sound like one of their advertisers asking for money LMBO I just love them and hate to see and know this is happening as I'm typing and you're reading this. So very, very heartbreaking to tears!😢

This mother is totally immersed in loving her infant, and it is beautiful to see. I wish the zoo would remember that orangutans are an arboreal species, and should be in the trees, not spending all their time on the ground. The baby needs to learn how to live in the treetops if the zoo is serious about conservation.

I’m sorry….With much respect & humility….but something didn’t feel “right” about how the baby’s right hand looked & some of the ways that the Mother was handling it. Maybe just comparing it to other videos I’ve seen…Poor thing, sitting on a fake rock with Mom bouncing it’s head back & forth. I naturally trust the caregivers, they certainly know much more than I do….but something was “off” & unnatural - especially with the wee one’s right hand. Please forgive me…..Blessings to you all!!

I noticed the same thing! The hand appears to have two digits fused together and the mom let the babies head dangle without supporting it’s neck a lot. She kept shaking it and moving it around, not letting it sleep when it was trying to.She also has a huge growth between her breasts which was obvious at the end while she walked.

Actually momma was looking at the fingers on the right hand like something wasn’t right too!! I know these babies are all arms and legs but this baby seemed to be disproportionate. And maybe the baby was squished inside mom in a weird position. I’m not sure how they get their hands on the baby to do an exam. All depends on the rapport with the keepers I guess.

Gosh I love these animals! Just out of curiosity was the baby in this video born with a birth defect on the right hand I think...? Not quite sure about which hand but it looked as though two fingers were fused together. I would imagine this could be a problem considering how much they climb.

Orang & chimp infants are almost painfully cute, and for good reason. They're just as helpless as human babies, except for their vice grips hands & feet, which they need in order to clamp on to their moms, who can't hold them as they navigate through the tree topps.

They don't even leave one tree! They clear cut everything! I've seen them knocking orangutans out of like one tree that is left standing! This is on the government off that country! You are saying that the baby is clinging just fine, but there’s something wrong with his right hand, and if it’s broken it needs treatment now before it heals improperly. She is handling it roughly, in an abusive manner and not allowing the baby to drink. If it’s a birth defect, you need to check out what chemicals are in the enclosure that mom is being exposed to, or in the food, etc.
