You made the right choice to turn around. Many experienced people die every year from not listening to their instincts

100%, a tip i learned from a federal agent, how they are trained, is always follow your instincts. dont ignore them for logic or any other reason. they are more accurate then we give them credit and keep you out of deadly situations.

@anthonybanker6479 but he could be pretty confident to retrace back to the car as opposed to potentially be blocked from ever reaching the cabin in the dark.

Always enjoy travelling with you, Jon. Here at sea level we've been hearing about the snow in the mountains, but it's been all rain, all the time. Kaya says, "Zip tie a chicken leg to my tail, daddy!" I love crab season -- just to eat, not to go crabbing. I'm going to sit in front of the tv this afternoon with a bowl of crab bisque and watch the Seahawks lose again.

I lived in the Oregon for a short while and we heard there was going to be snow coming so we got the snow shoes and all the gear ready. It was only a 3 mile or so hike so we got a late start. The destination was atop a mountain so we expected awesome views and great snow. What we did not expect was a hike full of switchbacks and extended wilderness which added 2 miles. We made it pitched the tent and then it got dark. Longest night ever but great trip and great snow.

I crab for many years. The best bait to use is fish head. Fished's bunker. Chicken's not really a natural thing in the water. The fish oils work better.
@Jay-is2jyАй бұрын
Never seen the ocean or crabbed but I grew up catching crawdads, the best bait was chicken livers left out in the sun for a bit... works great for catfish too... dunno how crabs would respond
@thebeardedhomesteaderАй бұрын
@Jay-is2jy That's probably the key to leaving them out in the Sun, so they're kind of rot, cause crabs are bottom feeders and whatnot.
@Jay-is2jyАй бұрын
@@thebeardedhomesteader it is.. most definitely... and you gotta get the timing right for the best result... too much and they don't want them and bait won't stay in a trap, on a hook the same.. but I have no idea about catching crabs or if they'd respond similarly.. good to know if I ever make it to the ocean... I assumed the same but you never know til you try
@thebeardedhomesteaderАй бұрын
@Jay-is2jy I always used bait fish if I remember they called it bunker cut in half peace in each trap. If you want to cheat wait till dark use a flashlight shine on the water and the crabs swim up to it and net them not sure you're allowed to do that lol
@Jay-is2jyАй бұрын
@@thebeardedhomesteader works for crawdads and frogs too... I always used the livers cause they were cheapest bait and had the best results... and I live in colorado.. not the best location for crustaceans

One should always do 10 times more research when planning a winter trip where inclement weather could be an issue. Especially in areas such as yours where there is always a potential of parcipatation in the form of snow, sleet, ice. It is also Always in your best interest to carry, food as well as shelter. They are just as important as having a knife, tarp, or tent, paracord, and warm clothing and a way to make fire. Remember the 5 ps. Proper planning presents piss poor preformance.
@lynnejohnstone2338Ай бұрын
Watch the weather crabs do like fresh water so if it's been raining a lot crabbing will be slow, netarts bay only has a small creek that flows into it. Shad is one of the best baits you can use, chicken is good because the seals don't like it. Tillamook sporting goods use to have mink for crab bait.you can have up to three rings\traps. Get a heavy fishing pole and a crab snare they work. Watch the river levels and when they drop try again. Try the other dock by the harbor deeper water there.

@samhill3496Ай бұрын
Wise decision to turn back. Not so wise to really even try given the forecast. Also NEVER go out up there without at least a 10x13 ft tarp or tent. You have to also consider the exposure to a rescue team coming to find you in very bad conditions. So all good. On a summer day do it. Beautiful crabbing. All good. A day outside is better than being inside. All good from east KY USA
@dawnbentley7656Ай бұрын
Your mistake was attaching chicken to the outside of the cage. They didn't need to crawl inside to get at the chicken. Always only put it inside the bait box...
