I went out today and bought amla powder from an Indian grocery store after listening to this video. It was $3.99 for 200g/7.0oz which seems to be noticeably cheaper than what it's being sold for online. I was hoping it would taste fruity but it actually taste like a mild spice. I added it to a smoothie and really couldn't it at all which is good.

I stir a teaspoon of amla and about 1/8 teaspoon of ginger powder, cinnamon and turmeric into my morning coffee with about a quarter cup of soy milk. Amla is super bitter by itself, but the other spices and the bitterness of the coffee flavor mask the flavor of the amla. I've been doing this for a couple of years. Great stuff!

@BoiseTriathlete7 жыл бұрын
+Tommy Scott - thank you very much for the link. This is of particular relevance for me as I am taking care of my mother with stage IV cancer, so the article does give me pause. Some concerns, however, are: 1) the use of mice--there are a number of studies where, once the species barrier was crossed, different results were produced than that in humans. 2) As +Peter Rabitt pointed out the method of delivery of these huge amounts of anti-oxidants were strictly via supplements or isolated compounds, not via whole foods. If you rely on whole foods for anti-oxidant delivery, it might be the case that you would not be physically capable of achieving the numbers used in the study. So in the case of someone that already has cancer ... inaction is action, and one has to weight the balance of evidence. Until I see more studies that support the findings of this one, I still think choosing to boost anti-oxidants, via whole foods, might be the smartest choice.
@BoiseTriathlete7 жыл бұрын
+Peter Rabitt You do know your stuff, sir. I consider myself a faithful student of Dr. Greger and had yet to see this ... until now (did that sound Gregerish?). @windre2 жыл бұрын
Basically, eat as much as possible. Antioxidants are not like other static nutrients where one serving of them at the beginning of the day is all you need. Events that induce oxidative stress, like exercise, actual stress, and injuries all "deplete" your "antioxidant stores". Having as much as possible is best practice because they can fight oxidative stress and inflammation anywhere and everywhere it occurs. They also seem to have beneficial effects on cognitive and arterial function as well.

@alicenirvana10 жыл бұрын
Look for farmer's markets; if you go to them later in the day sometimes you can get good deals on foods because they have to sell all of the produce they have remaining. Another option if you go to Google.com and look for "fruit and vegetable wholesaler" often you can find wholesalers who will sell bulk fruit and veg for a good price, but they might have minimum orders or sell fruits/veg by the case so you'd have to eat lots of food. If there's extra you can always freeze it. Another option is look for a fruit and veg co-operative company in your area, they can often get you discounted fruit & veg. You can also try to buy frozen fruits and vegetables when they're on sale. Aside from fruits and vegetables, some extremely low-cost meal staples are beans, rice, and potatoes.

Richard, with all due respect, a pound of dried lentils or beans is $1 and will likely last you and spouse a good long time. A pound of brown rice is 88 cents...a pound of organic whole carrots is 89 cents (Trader Joe's or Walmart)...these are just a few examples of inexpensive whole plant foods...sweet potatoes too are usually very inexpensive...I can usually get 3 for $1 and I live in SW Florida. @Joseph1NJ8 жыл бұрын
Good question. We don't know because it's never been studied. We do know, or according to recent suggestions, that taking antioxidants in supplement form is not recommend. Of course a supplement is not the same as whole food. So the question begs, even in whole foods, is there such as a thing as too much of a good thing? Common sense would tell us yes. I'll skip the gooseberry powder and stick with blueberries myself.

Tom Jones I to had come across talk of too much antioxidants creating a pro-oxidant effect. Dr. Gregor missing this supposed fact however would really surprise me. Somehow I feel very safe following his advice and his own practice though I acknowledge he's no God and has been wrong in the past (hibiscus tea...).
@tomjones62968 жыл бұрын
login211 Yeah, I fell for that Hibiscus thing myself. Bought a whole bag of dried Hibiscus with the idea of making a potent antioxidant drink only to learn (thankfully BEFORE I opened the packaging) that it may come with a caveat (aluminum as I recall) anyway, I was able to return it for a refund since it was unopened. So I am thinking Dr Greger is an "early adopter" when it comes to science and about nutrition....also I notice, as he points out himself, many of his quoted studies are done on behalf of the food interests that the study is about....like blue berry studies funded by blueberry interests....still....and even though he is a vegan for reasons other than health, he does have the most information available, and I alone have probably enticed half a dozen people into buying his book, or at least reading a copy of it.
@bassam.20238 жыл бұрын
Tom Jones Just to be clear, hibiscus tea is fine but it can be overdone and you should not eat the leaves/flowers as Dr. Greger used to. He does also take into account where the funding for the study came from in his analysis btw. I trust the man, definitely a fan but not a fanboy.

He always provides the source of his information. Since he has a staff of ten just to be able to comb through all the scientific studies, he or they are able to filter out one-off studies versus peer reviewed double blind studies which are the benchmark for deciding what to believe.

Dr Greger. I really appreciate your videos and even though I'm a meat eater (mainly fish and turkey) I'm learning alott from you. I have a question about this smoothy. You said Ripe mexican mango pulp. I've bought frozen mango slices to use instead. Would it be better to get the pulp because of the sugar content? I know blueberrys help counteract the sugar content of the mango but 11g of sugar per 80g serving is difficult to swallow :(! Also I have a question about Acai berrys, I'm looking to buy them in the UK and see many freeze dried and powdered products, how do I know they're safe for consumption? If you do answer my question I'll make sure I donate. Regards.

I'm not sure I exactly understan your question, however let me try to answer. Always better to get mango if it has no added (refined) sugar. Also Dr. Greger mentioned in one of the videos that it's mostly good to get frozen products as they are frozen when ripe and might have actually a higher vitamin content than fresh (but picked off-season, transported, etc). products.

I eat a breakfast after which I feel extremely exhausted and I feel hungry after only about 3 hours, despite it should be a healthy breakfast and it should hold longer. This breakfast meal is: In a bowl I put 5 spoons of oat flakes, 5 spoons of mixed cereals flakes, several raisins( these have fructose syrup unfortunately) , several walnuts, few almonds, several pumpkin seeds, a spoon of carob powder, a teaspoon of cinnamon powder, tip of teaspoon of clove powder. In addition to these, grinded: a spoon of flax seeds, a spoon of chia seeds, a spoon of sesame seeds. On top I usually add a kiwi, an apple or some dates. All these I put in water about 30 minutes or more. So what do I do wrong? All the powders are too much? The fruits are not good in the morning? The fructose syrup from the raisins is so bad? Am I puting too much seeds? The ingredients do not combine properly? Would you like to give me some advice about this? Thanks in advance! :)

Depends on the fruit; for berries, mango and banana, it seems not. For apples and oranges, it seems yes!

Curious, does your body need that many antioxidants? I am thinking that your body rids itself of excess vitamins. Would it do the same for antioxidants as well or can your body use as many as you give it? Smoothies are delicious but i like to chew food as well to feel satiated.

Because the Vitamin C isn't what is giving it the antioxidant power... things like emblicanin A, emblicanin B, punigluconin and pedunculagin, punicafolin, phyllanemblinin A and phyllanemblin are what gives it it's antioxidant power.

I started having this in the morning, but I have a question. I also add a scoop of protein powder, but I seem to recall seeing in one of your other videos that you don't use cow milk because it binds to the antioxidants making then unavailable. So does adding some whey have this same effect, or is it ok to use?
@-V33-11 жыл бұрын
same effect because whey is made from cows milk. It's nasty stuff IMO if you really want protein powder I'd recommend hemp protein powder

That is true it does not contain caesin which has been shown to be troublesome for humans. Nevertheless it is still produced by milk which is, these days, full of antibiotics, hormones, blood and pus. For that reason I don't consider it clean or healthy at all.

Try Hydrolized whey. No lactose, 0 fats, 0 carbs. Much more healthy than milk and is not going to kill.you.

Instead of listening to this rubbish comments about whey protein, do your own research about hydrolized whey. In very few words, whey will help you to burn fat, increase lean mass amongother benefits. Search on pub med and make your own conclusions.

Dan Blaze that is very true and even from personal experience my immune system weakened when I used to take whey. I took it on and off to ensure that whey was the culprit and damn straight it was. I wonder why I used to pay so much money for something that has no benefit to me whatsoever lol. I bought in to the lies and the marketing!

how can I tell my amla powder has any antioxidents ..I don't see any information on the package ?
@NutritionFactsOrg3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Vrinda Bhalla! Depending on where you are buying it, that is not the kind of information generally required on packaging. We know that amla has a high antioxidant content because it has been..."put to the test!" If you're interested in the evidence, you can find all the articles mentioned in NutritionFacts videos by clicking the "Sources Cited" link below the video window on our website. You can find everything on our site related to amla here: nutritionfacts.org/topics/amla/ I hope that helps! -Christine Kestner, MS, CNS, LDN, NutritionFacts.org Health Support Volunteer

i would like to see some study showing exact amount of antioxidants people need. I think over boosting your antioxidant level will simply make you poop your antioxidants out.
