Putting in 2 new garden beds the other day along my front walk and the funniest thing happened. I told my husband that maybe we should make it smaller so we won't need as many plants to fill it and he replied, "I don't know, what would Laura do?" I busted out laughing...I have him hooked on Garden Answer!!

The Hansher Family asked about getting plants in a pot neatly. What I do is plant the pot with the empty pots of the plants I’m putting in. Then take the pots out and drop in the actual plant. Firm up around and taadaa! A beautiful planter is born!

I worked in a greenhouse for 7 years, and it was the best job I ever had I. I also learn by doing and I learned a ton of things about plants and it has stayed with me. I still read up on things and of course watch Garden Answer if I am not sure of something. The best place to work ( in my opinion) is a greenhouse / garden center. Laura and Arron, my wife and I work together in all of the flower gardening for our home and it is great to see both of you enjoy this so much. We visit local garden centers and I see all of these husbands begrudgingly standing there holding a pot of flowers as far away from their body as possible so as to disassociate themselves from the whole experience. Gardening is another growing and changing piece of our marriage and so I would encourage all husbands to become more involved in the gardening process if they aren't already. Love my daily dose of Garden Answers!

Never look up! Especially if seagulls are in the air. I even think that seagulls sometimes do it on purpose. For example take my seagull poo encounter (which is probably the most disgusting one and I'm not kidding it really happened to me, that's a true story😅). I was filming some seagulls flying over the beach, so I was looking up. When I was filming and a small group of them flew exactly above my face I even said to my boyfriend "I don't like these birds". Then, a second later, suddenly a warm, sticky goo hit me right on my mouth and my lips. Luckily my mouth was not open, but a small part of it landed inside, so I immediately spat it out. The rest of that green-brown goo was all across my lips and chin🤢. Thanks to the taste (yes I had to taste it and it was awful😂) I immediately knew what it was and whiped it off. Back home I brushed my teeth like 100 times😅. It is definitely the most disgusting thing that has ever happened to me😂😂. I'm sure that seagull aimed and used me as a target...or maybe it heard how I said that I don't like them and decided to give me some instant karma😂...anyway I hate seagulls now😠.

Same! Master Gardeners are important. We upkeep the local Botanical Gardens in our communities, not to mention run diagnostic clinics, plant the public spaces and do community service. And we pay to do it - nobody pays us! We have a huge local community Botanical Center with only 4 full time employees. There is no way these Gardens could remain free and open to the public year round without volunteer service of people work there for free just because we love plants and love to garden. The training we get should count for something I hope!

Master Gardeners are always learning - just like any other gardener. And not all MG programs are the same. I have been an MG in 3 states over the years - some are a lot better than others (some places it’s more like a social club than a gardening club). I have put in tons of volunteer hours over the years to keep public spaces beautiful in my community. But I don’t consider myself a “master” gardener - because I am more like a jack of all trades... 😂

As a Garden Store Supervisor for a small family nursery/landscape company it's great that you tell people to check with their local garden centers for things. I would love to purchase the AquaPots but they are totally not affordable for our small company to purchase. We do not have room to store a pallet or more of the same style & size of pot. If they were in smaller quantities and mixes and not cost us $1000 or more I would so do it. I agree with you about young people (or anyone actually) who is interested in working in a garden center but has no plant knowledge or experience. I recently had someone ask me the same question and I told her that no experience was necessary just be willing to learn and understand there is a lot of physical work that can seem very repetitive at times. We have found one of the best ways for new employees to learn is by tagging the plants as they come in, this way they read the tags and ask questions. Some of my best teachers and coworkers have been those who have no previous experience. The "master gardeners" I have had experience with have scared me off from having them join our team because many of them know it all, are not willing to learn more, or are so set in what they believe that it's hard to learn a different way. That being said, this is not all "master gardeners" but a majority of those I have personally met. I have 2 AAS degrees (Landscape & Nursery Management) and a Master Certification from our state Nursery & Landscape Association but I still learn something new everyday and do not have all the answers.

I never cared much for petunias until PW supertunia for the first time this year. They are so colorful. The Paradise is gorgeous. And I brought home Priscilla, another gorgeous color. Can’t wait to see what you do with the 2022 version. And I’d love to see more recipes.

I think these recap videos are just the best - as another commenter shared - Aaron has much to do with making these so enjoyable to watch. I love the banter between Laura & Aaron and how much more involved he has become with the planning of the property. If only he would move in front of the camera...

FYI! We got a golf cart this year for the grandkids to ride around in our yard, we have a total of 6 acres, you will make a path in your grass, trust me, you will. Now in some parts it will not be so noticeable, but in others it will be there. I have now turned it into a trail and have decided to make it part of the design. part of our home is in the woods and part is lawn with lots of sun and just a few trees in the grassy area. But you will end up making a path in your grass. but it looks neat. have fun with it.

Isn't being pooped on by a bird a good luck sign? But you don't need luck, Laura and Aaron. You have created an extraordinary community here with your positive, uplifting and down-to-earth approach to gardening and life. Your light is shining through to all of us and we are so grateful to be here every week! It's my second piece of Heaven during the day after I've come in with my hands dirty from gardening. Blessings to you and your sweet family!

Sorry about the bird poop. My mom, back when women got their hair done once a week, had a HUGE seagull crap on her head. We kids laughed and laughed. Mom was not amused :))

Living in Arizona, having a grass lawn is almost impossible. So, when I see grass all I see is a lot of maintenance haha

And a lot of watering...very expensive. But yes, restful to the eye. Most green lawns are gone now, everyone is into xeriscaping. Better for the water table, but hot and dry. I never minded mowing.

@@donnajoyner1474 Lol, yes a lot of watering and Arizona is struggling for water since we didn’t get our normal monsoons this year. What is xeriscape, sounds interesting.

Star Song - 100% agree with Laura’s comments - apply and just do. I learned A LOT of what I know by working PT at a local greenhouse - & now I’m a certified Mater Gardener! I’d suggest every time someone asks you a question you can’t answer and need help with - to not only direct them to a person who knows - but stick around to hear what that person has to say. You gain all your knowledge and how to’s by listening what questions are being asked by your local customers coming in to shop. Because most likely if they have questions or problems needing solving, someone else has those same questions that when the time comes that next person comes to ask the questions, now you know the answer because you stuck around and listened. Also, the plant tags do help you ID plants, their soil, watering and light needs. It’s a great job to have during spring/summer/fall growing seasons!! Have fun!!

The best tip for working out how long to run your irrigation or sprinkler is to place containers around. Butter tubs will do. Time the start and measure the water collected in the tubs. Then finger depth test the soil around the planted area. Then set timer and watch the plants vitality. Adjust accordingly.

This video brought back a childhood memory! My cousin was graduating, we were in the bleachers and a flock of birds flew over and one pooped right on my uncles bald head! Out of all the people in that huge stadium. I had forgotten all about that! I just love your videos. All of the things you have taught me are priceless to me! Thanks Laura and Aaron!

I am very interested in how your trial of not doing weekly fertilization of annuals is going to turn out. I hope that you will do both as a comparison. Like have 2 pots exactly the same plants, but feed one weekly and the other with the reduced schedule of slow release. In the past, I never did a lot of annuals myself. One reason is that, like you, I don't favor red flowers as a rule and prior versions of non red annuals, such as petunias just got leggy and not great as the hot humid summers went on (I am talking about 30 years back). And it seemed like perennials were a better investment, etc. Anyway, you inspired me with the new super series and I did plant superpetunias, superbells, and superbenas, in a few pots, and went ahead and fertilized them weekly which I had never done before. And, oh my word (to quote you 😀) did I love it. I had never had annuals that performed so well...and I am a convert Sooo, this is a very verbose way of saying that the weekly fertilizer you inspired gave great results, but if it will work just as well using a less frequent method, I want to see.
