This was Glenn’s moment and they ruined it by having Abraham die as well. Abraham should’ve stayed alive and they should’ve taken Daryl as collateral. Also it was cheap move to make us wait six months for a shitty premier with hella filler. No need for all that. Let Glenn and Negan have their moment.
@alphariot2685

Fun fact. During the time we were waiting for the season 7 premier, my dad and I went to a Walker Stalker Convention. They had one of those games where you place a dollar on a tile and hope that when the spin the wheel, it lands on yours. At this one, they had many characters of which you had to pick which one you think died, and there was option for 2 victims. At the time, I believed it was gonna be only Glenn (I read the comics and figured they’d go that route). However, out of a desire to win a Negan shirt, I placed my dollar on the “2 victims” tile. Well, I won the shirt cause it landed on it. I like to believe that that moment foreshadowed what was gonna happen in the show. Just a hilarious coincidence.

MY biggest issue with the Glenn death is that they had just done a fake death in the previous season, so its was weird to kill him off right after

@jjkilhij9531 2 жыл бұрын
I always felt like MAYBE if they hadn’t shown the actually killing of the chosen person in that fakeout first person POV during the season 6 finale, maybe people wouldn’t have gotten as upset. Like imagine Negan doing eenie meany miney mo, and then he was like “And you…are…it”, then on the word “it” we see him point at the camera and it just faded to black. While it still would’ve probably stirred some people up, I feel like it would’ve gone over a LOT better since it would be less of a tease. Just an idea though.

@@HellAintHalfFull The only way you could see spoilers about who died is if you actively went looking for them. Otherwise no, it wasn't plastered all over KZbin videos etc etc prior to the episode airing. Even for a few weeks fans tried to talk about it without spoiling it for those who hadn't watched it yet. You're making stuff up just to be angry over a show not unfolding the way YOU wanted it to. You couldn't wait a few months and had to go find out who was killed and instead of blaming yourself for choosing to go look for those spoilers you blame the show writers. Logical.

I'll always feel as though Glenn's death was a serious misfire from the writers' end. I could just be a big ol' stan but I really like the dynamic that Steven Yeun's portrayal brought to the table and even if everything else progressed as it did with Carl's death and Rick's departure, I wouldn't necessarily have minded Glenn taking center stage as a replacement for the Grimes family.
@Koroto
@Koroto 2 жыл бұрын
I'm of 2 minds about the whole Glenn thing - on one hand, I'm totally with you (I think I've rambled on about how I think Steven Yeun's one of the best actors long enough already), and killing him off did seriously hurt the heart of the show. As much as Kirkman might've joked around about how Glenn in the TV version makes the comic version look bad - I genuinely think that is the case, maybe not exactly 'bad', but I certainly think that the tv version of his character is in an entirely different league. And on top of all of that - considering that the main liners would begin to fall of one after another, if Glenn had been kept around, in hindsight I do think that the show would've been much better off. Though at the same time - Glenn's death is an incredibly important moment for Maggie's character, and many of her storylines from the book would either have to be drastically altered or removed outright. And on top of that - I feel like for Negan to be solidified as the biggest bad yet, we had to lose someone from the original Atlanta gang, and with Glenn literally being responsible for Rick's survival at the very very beginning - his death achieves that incredibly well. And don't worry, I'm a Glenn stan myself - dude's a legend 😂

Fair enough on the Maggie points. I wouldn't know how to redistribute her plotlines without Glenn's death, other than just sidelining it straight to Sasha which would kinda feel like a cop out.

I feel where you're coming from and I do agree to an extent. But I will say there is a point where likeable characters do have to survive because if you kill them all off write them all out whatever, then you're left with a cast of characters people don't want to watch. Show has to keep SOME level of fun factor and watchable nature. It blew up because the characters were believable likeable and well written. Can you imagine the state of the show if all that was left were the bitter edgelords and the quiet loners with no personality?

Most of my general audience circle (friends and family) dropped the show after the season 7 premiere. I really think that the cliffhanger, months without thinking about the show, then those violent deaths of beloved characters without proper buildup turned off most casual watching people permanently. I really feel like the season 6 finale was extremely solid buildup and they should’ve had the balls to kill Glenn at the end. It would be remembered like the red wedding instead of an obnoxious stretch to artificially inflate viewership numbers.
@mikecabrera7393
@mikecabrera7393 Жыл бұрын
I honestly don't understand people's frustration, the show only got backlash for the violence because casual viewers only watched the show because of the hype train it had back then, regular viewers were used to the violence by then and only then were they so profoundly affected because it was a loved character. It was done very well and while season 7 has it's hiccups, I still felt that it was a solid season overall
@ArDeeMee

Actually, that’s a great comparison! It could have been the Red Wedding, a brutal event the book readers had been very anxious about. And the way it was presented is haunting - and it’s the only episode without music during the credits. Instead it became Sansa‘s wedding night. Also brutal and haunting. And also very popular for being virtue-signaled about how bad it supposedly was. Lots of idiots who didn’t watch the show anyways, loudly proclaiming how they will boycott GoT from now on. It was ridiculous.

Firstly, I do greatly appreciate what is lead with in this video. The crack at “professionals at finding problems in things they don’t care about” is a spectacular addition, and made me very happy. In addition to that, noting that Gimple wrote this amazing episode was personally something that I think showed your integrity in depicting the entire situation surrounding the environment of the show throughout the years- wonderfully done. Secondly, while I am an immense enjoyer of the 2nd and 3rd episodes as they are, I can respect and understand the points you make about the order in which they were released. I, in my multiple years of thinking about the reactions to seasons 7 and 8, have defended that order in particular in that, due to peoples visceral reaction to constant violence and character loss (I.E. Beth and Tyreese within 2 episodes, and so on and so forth) I find the reprieve of the 2nd and 3rd episodes of season 7 to be seemingly what the writing staff, as well as the audience up until that point felt would make the tone even out passed the 1st episode, so more sadness could occur. Even still, the collectors in episode 2 are frustrating and the complexity of the king is immensely enjoyable and intriguing. So I, like you in most respects, don’t understand the negative reaction to these episodes outside of the pissy-ness displayed by those “professionals” you’ve mentioned :) Wonderful job- love these videos every time! Thank you

The best way to fix this Season is to shorten it down to 8 episodes. Have the Season premiere be an extension of the Season 6 finale (fixing the issue of the cliffhanger) then open this Season with episode 4 and have Rick declare war at the end of the episode.

I find The Alien spin-off comic very interesting because it's based off a character who basically had no presence in the main comic. Rick's brother was mentioned only twice as far as I know of, and only once by his own brother. So for someone to make a comic on his story, and for the creator of The Walking Dead to give it canon status is something else.

I knew Abraham was doomed when he didn’t get his comic death. I was a senior in high school and everyone was talking about it. The second that episode finished on the cliffhanger I told everyone that Abraham was getting the bat. At this point I was thinking that the show was too scared to kill Glenn since he was SO popular and I seriously thought it would only be Abe which I hated because Abe was my favorite person in the comic. Honestly as much as I loved both Glenn and Abe I was so happy that TWD kept Glenn’s death too because it showed me that they were willing to kill off big characters again

Honestly, I'd love an entire series of rewrites where you rewrite portions of the show to fit both more of the comics and also certain decisions that make the TV show unique, season by season. Especially if actors leaving/disagreements with AMC (Frank Darabont) never happened. "The Walking Dead TV Show vs. Korotos Rewrite" or something, season by season examples of what you'd change to make the perfect iteration and mashup of the two.

Even if he doesn't say it outright what he ment right there was if another punch is thrown then Glen will get the punishment he avoided by doing it first.. Ofc Daryll assumed he would be punished himself but if he had paid attention to what was happening and how negan was laying down the law he should have known nothing good will come from attacking him in that moment.. Daryll got Glenn killed and the show did kinda pussy out on dealing with it having Daryl being the only one torn up about it.. Maggie could at least have irrationally blamed him for a little bit.

8:1 is how to run your audience off. You leave a cliffhanger that rubs them the wrong way to begin with, make them wait months on end for the payoff, and then what? How is their patience rewarded? Oh, by making them wait AGAIN until the final 5 minutes of the episode to resolve the cliffhanger. A whole lot of viewers just said, "F this then" and moved on.

IMO i love the shows introduction of Megan better, More stakes, More ruthlessness, And just straight up breaking ricks mentality is what made that premiere so bad ass after seeing Rick just steam roll over everyone previously. It just set the tone for how bad ass negan and saviors are, And Jeffer Dean Morgans performance and just amazing. Just to me the TV introduced negan much better. But I guess I will have to see your next few videos on how the book does with negan vs the TV show

Perhaps an unpopular opinion but I'm not a fan of the premiere. It just feels like prancing around for 40 minutes, leaving what the audience actually wanted to see around the 20 minute mark and not really offering much after that. Negan getting Rick to cut off Carl's arm felt like they were overdoing it imo. A somewhat similar scene happens in 7x16 when Negan goes to kill Carl and it doesn't really leave much of an impact, which I think is thanks to that scene.

I think what would’ve worked well is if they showed abes death in the last ep of season 6 then have Glenn’s death happen in the premier of season 7. It would’ve fixed the trailer as you could’ve had some characters from the line up in it and people wouldn’t have expected a death right off the bat

The best way to do fix the 6 finale and 7 premiere is for TDWCWYWB to be the finale and 704 to be the premiere instead of, well, 704

I'm surprised with all of the talk about alternate scenes being shot, you didn't mention the alternate Negan rant with the swearing left in. Another great video!

I did! It's in the season 6 video since it was technically an alternate scene of the finale 👍

After being part of the fanbase at release and rewatching it last year, I kinda see why there was a loss of viewers. I mean let's take a typical viewer, no clue about the comics and what's to come plus an overall one week break (at least) in between the episodes. First, it's been 6 seasons already that is already impressive but at this point many people will just kind of tune out or lose interest more easily. Then you have this growing cliffhanger and fake-out stuff, which wasn't that big in the first seasons and only works if the people are fully invested + add the mentioned pacing of the episodes where a storyline can stand still for weeks. Furthermore, these In-Between episodes are sometime really slow, throwing in a character-centric episode unrelated to the war or introducing new camps or characters with no idea how they fit in for quite a while sometimes. Not to mention: the seasons started with killing Glenn, who was still one of the most loved characters of the show and presenting so much good feeling like humour, finding love and kindness. Axed off in one of the most brutal scenes. And then the first half was mostly just depressing, as intended, but maybe a little bit too sad and hopeless for viewers, Losing him, the slow progress and then having this whole feeling to the show... It just does not feel that good to tune in, even feels a bit stale. Though, I remember the second half (or was it S8?) with a lot of shooting scenes and stuff which was another kind of not fun for me personally..... The Governor war had many of these things as well, but it didn't feel as slow and burdened by this many factions and characters, probably mainly because it was able to keep itself more simple.

I do remember on the topic of violence complaints some of it was people questioning the fact that Glenn, the person of color of the two victims, had a substantially for violent death than Abe. I kinda understand people questioning that, especially if they hadn't read the comics beforehand. Personally I've been mixed in my opinion on Glenn's death. It did really great things for Maggie's character who was slowly building for a few seasons now and her performance is seriously off the charts, but at the same time the difference between comic and TV Glenn is so much that I can't help but feel it was a little bit of a mistake. In both adaptations we're set up with having a soft spot for Glenn, but Steven Yeun had done so much for the character since the start and generally his character grew so much to the point where Glenn was waaay more important to the story and important for morale. idk, I did like the choice of Abe though. Negan killing a character who had been shown to be the group's tank is pretty terrifying.

2 things I wanna point out.. #1 Rick telling Carl that he will never be safe back in a few seasons.. And then Megan's introduction telling Rick he's not safe.. #2 Simon telling Rick when they first encounter that they used the guy as an example. A little before Simon telling that same guy they had to string and hang one of theirs cause they didn't listen and killed the rest. That same group that got killed and they guys they hung was in the episode when morgan was looking for Carol and he came around the guy that was hung and freed him. And the rest that they killed was behind morgan. I just noticed that yesterday!!

I remember there being a lot of issues with the violence of 7x01, but at the same time, the people complaining hadn't seen the (in my opinion) worse stuff that happened in the book with the governor. This episode was one of the best for me. The Negan story being almost completely comic accurate made it that much better. I feel that they had to not only keep the comic fans happy but also keep the show fans entertained. And that's where a problem came up. Because, by this time in the comic, Abraham was already dead. So maybe this was them catching up while giving the show fans more of a reaction to what was happening, but at the same time, overshadowing Abraham's death because of Glenn. If they could have done anything better, having the episode order the same as the comic like you said would have been better. It would have given us enough time with Negan to love to hate him that much more, while setting up other communities similar to the books pacing. It would have been a much better season. If they did that, I think season 7 would easily be the best season of the show

It was a very bizarre decision to not include the downtime in the comic between Glenn’s death and Negan arriving at Alexandria. Although slow, it was very interesting… and we got literally none of that. The best we got was a shortened “Negan is in charge speech.” But even then that’s when Negan is already in Alexandria.

I just didn’t like the way the cliffhanger was setup. If they didn’t already do the same thing with Glenn earlier then I might have been less annoyed. Also that they waited until the end of the episode to reveal it. I was excited because Jeffrey Dean Morgan was perfect casting for Negan, but yeah with how long it took to get back to the survivors in those first few episodes was frustrating. I loved Ezekiel, but I wanted to see how the others were doing. The following season was when I quit the show. The war with Negan meandered, the infighting was tiring, and Carl’s departure killed it for me. Yet I still watch an episode here and there, I had a lot of fun getting my friend into the series. It’s really bittersweet.

It’s funny looking back at these seasons of the show because I didn’t like season 6 and 7 as much at the time not sure why anymore but as 8 and 9 came out I realized that the second half of season 7 felt like the big change in how the show felt. Now as the final season closes up looking back to season 6 and 7 I feel like it still was way better to me then the following seasons although I’d say midway/towards the end of the whisperer arc I started gaining my diehard love for the show again and accepted that the show will never feel like the first 5 seasons. Also your opinion on the controversy is exactly how I thought about it

People say it was impossible to know for sure who was going to be killed, but I swear on my soul I fucking knew it was Abraham but I genuinely cannot remember my logic behind it. And this was before all the discussion had begun about it, but I'm not willing to rewatch all of TWD to figure it out again.

I was a big fan of the show, watched till the first episode of season 7. Still have a big sweet spot for it. But the reason I stopped watching was actually the violence. The difference between the violence inflicted by negan and the violence inflicted to sam and noah was the fact that the latter two were inflicted by zombies. The zombies are just that, zombies, it's their nature to inflict damage. It doesn't matter how gruesome the damage is to the victim, it isn't done consciously. That is a whole different story with negan. He is a conscious human being, he knows what he's doing and on top of that, he enjoys it. With the rest of the survivors violence was a necessary evil, sure sometimes it was overkill (rick and the terminus people and rick and claimers) but it didn't seem that they liked it. Negan is downright a psychopath, he laughs when he does this kind of stuff and it just made me sick to my stomach. I just downright quit watching the show after this episode because it glorified violence. Maybe negan gets a sort of redemption from this (which i didn't see because i stopped watching), but his character (beside the fact that jeffrey dean morgan plays him wonderfull) just put me off to much.

Being one of those casual viewers who didn't read the books, The death of Glenn was likely what did it for the shows viewership. I never stopped watching, but afterwards the show loses a lot of desirability. Especially since Neagan doesn't die. Now watching the show is like watching the murderer of a good friend parade around without consequences. Even fuckin Maggie is starting to forgive him. From a show runner's perspective I get it. Who else has the charisma to be the show's leading man?
