Today at the Mystery Shack, we return to the universe of The Walking Dead to continue our retrospective journey through the series. We will be delving into the TV-show version and the respective comic book issues to see how the adaption handled taking the panels into a live-action format. In today's episode, we dive into the peak of the Walking Dead TV’s adaptation - season 5, as well as one of, if not my favorite arc in the entire series - Fear The Hunters.

Season 5 is a major turning point for the group. Everyone is hardened by everything that’s happened. And terminus was the final push. All roads lead to terminus. Caveman Rick and his band of marauders was born. Carl grows up, Carol becomes the doomslayer, Daryl becomes a one man force of nature. Then wham. Alexandria. Genius

Season 5 is my all-time favorite season of The Walking Dead. Season 4 was very good, but season 5 was the peak of the show's HYPE for me. I loved every second of it. My only two issues are how they handled Beth and Tyreese. I would have liked to see more of them. But the Terminus stuff was great, the introduction of Alexandria was wonderful, and I loved the finale with Rick killing Pete. Season 6 was pretty good, then I hated seasons 7 and 8, but loved season 9 and enjoyed season 10.

This series got me inspired to rewatch the show for the first time since giving up on it during the Savior Arc. I watched it as it came out and the difference in watching a TV show at 13 and 22 is compelling. What I remember and don't plus these videos add even more fun with how the comics are and aren't different

Y'know, I always wondered how the group was able to find enough food that they needed for their group without resorting to what The Hunters did themselves. It really makes you think about all the luxuries we have now that we would miss. I know I'd make it my personal mission to bring those luxuries back if I found a place like Alexandria. Because we all know that the new worlds going to need Ice Cream.

Ig it rlly helps to have someone like Daryl who can teach the group to hunt and track? Ik he would sometimes have squirrels, birds, you name it Then there’s times where they have to resort to eating things they normally wouldn’t Like how Carl went to eat dog food once and then when they had to kill the pack of dogs to eat If they probably COULD reach the point of cannibalism but they thankfully have been able to get around it
@MrKing-771

It's because the hunters really didn't need to resort to cannabilism. They could have hunted, scavenged, or even farmed. They're monsters who took what could be argued as the easy way out.

I loved the contrast of how this season started with the group having to escape from cannibals, being hunted down and then having to butcher them themselves, and ended with finding a safe haven and having to adjust to living normally again. The juxtaposition between the old world and the new world was a perfect theme for this season

I think one of my favorite Kirkman “retelling rather than flashing back” moment was Carl telling Lydia about the first time he called Andrea “mom.” Carl talks about admitting to Andrea that he killed Ben, and how parents are supposed to love you no matter what - Carl says that after Andrea cried for a second, she still told him, “I love you very much,” and in that moment, Carl realized that Andrea was in fact his Mom, and called her mom for the first time. we miss a lot of key events when the narrative time jumped during the Alexandria arc, especially when it comes to relationship moments between ALL the survivors. for this moment, we get it through the eyes of Carl in one of the strongest monologues in the entire comic run. extremely emotional and it helped Lydia change her way of thinking, setting the stage for the entire Whisperers confrontation.

Those who stopped after season 7 were just watching for the action scenes. I agree it got a lil boring at times (thus why I took a break when I watched earlier seasons fully without one before) but thats becouse of world building that was NEEDED here for All Out War arc

A lot of people checked out when Glenn went out the way he did (he was the heart of the show for lots of folks, and I personally know a few who basically quit after seeing that, and I don't blame them, it was extremely difficult to see that). Doesn't help that they had everyone wait for half a year just to know who the victim was, people can tell when you're just doing something for ratings and not cuz' you're trying to tell a story (just like that stupid ass dumpster thing they did with Glenn). Plus, people didn't enjoy seeing Rick and the group miserable. Then the Carl thing happened, and people tuned out feeling like the war was getting dragged out. I love this show, but even I was struggling to get thru S7-S8. This show passed its peak a long time ago.

You could cut 1/2 of the all out war arc, and the outcome would still be the same.
@conlinbuttermann8803
@conlinbuttermann8803 2 жыл бұрын
@@blipflipped6680 I can understand the feeling that people felt in reference to Glenn’s death- but I feel as though, as it is part of the source material- and people probably had similar feelings when reading, I find it silly that people would stop watching a show they watched for 7 years because of that. That’s just me. I didn’t have too much of an issue with the war stuff, though I can see some people boredom. I found the inescapable dread to be something we hadn’t seen too heavily up until that point. It’s not fun, but it’s something that was necessary to actually articulate the weight realistically in my opinion.

I like Carls juxtaposition from comic to television. Carl is my favorite character in both adaptations for two very different reasons. Carl in the books is one of the most ruthless, cold, calculative borderline villainous characters in the series which makes for a deliciously demented child character, whereas television Carl is a compassionate and loving character who seems to have worn his father's hat like a halo as the series progressed. Carl's character in the television series broke me in half when things started careening in the direction his character wound up in, as he felt to almost take Hershel's torch as peacekeeper and voice of reason. Chandler played this version of the character beautifully in my opinion, and in my silly little head, it feels like Carl saw his father descend into ruthlessness and decided to correct the wrongs he saw, be the good his mother would have wanted. I think both Carl Grimes are equally well done out characters, just in their own unique way.

Agree 100% with the comic one, but disagree with the show version. Show Carl to me was just boring, especially in season 8 when he completely turned into a pacifist and got himself pointlessly bit, and Chandler's acting seemed to somehow get worse the older he got.

No Sanctuary is one of my favorite episodes of all time. It had it all: action, suspense, emotion and - of course - the Morgan cliffhanger. Changing the location of the massacre of the hunters to Gabriel's church was an absolutely great decision. It really showed how the world and our group have changed over the years. It didn't matter that they killed in a church, a house of God. Like Maggie said, it was just four walls and a roof. I also think it made Gabriel's attempt to betray Rick to Deanna later in the season a lot more understandable. I think this season's pace was mixed. It would have been nice if the Terminus arc had been a bit longer, but the three episodes were also more than enough to tell the story. The hospital arc was the weakest and most boring part of season 5. It dragged on for too long and it eventually led to nothing. Beth died and Noah joined the group, who would also die later in the season. It was just a waste of time in my opinion.

Season 5 really was peak walking dead as it shows just how dangerous the world outside is even for experienced survivors. I believe there are 4 deaths in the core group and one of the things i particularly like is they're seemingly placed at random, episode 3, 8, 9 and 14. Yes there are deaths in the midseason finale and premiere but the death in the mid-season premiere is sort of like a "oh you thought everyone was safe for a few episodes because you had a death last episode didn't you?" message. I also think that's the only time that's happened to characters in the central cast that have been in the show for more than 1 season where it was done tastefully

I still remember basically everything about this era of the walking dead like it happened yesterday. I remember I watching the first three episodes of season 5 live, and it being so good but also deviating from the source material enough that it actually made me want to read the comic. Without season 5 I wouldn’t have ever read the comics, main reason for that is because I think this whole arc was just amazing. And Its insane to me to think that it’s even better in the comic lol. Marginally better but better in the comic because the character writing is just so much stronger due to the comic book format.

never read the comics and actually started rewatching when i found this series of yours, just in season 6 now but season 5 was weird. after the perfect seasons 3 and 4 the beginning of season 5 is kinda the same vibe but when it gets to the beth episodes its very slow and then in like 1 or 2 episodes they're in alexandria so thats weird

Episode 4 was only Beth, but episodes 6,7 and 8 had the main group as well. Episode 5 was entirely Abraham's group. There were also 3 episodes before Alexandria, not sure what you mean there...

Season 5 was so damn close to being great but failed. As someone who’s doing and on doing a channel on rewrites, season 5 is a very… interesting season for me.Without getting too much into spoilers, I cut the episode count from 16 to 14, took the very very few necessary scenes in episode 10 prior to the water hole scene and bolted them onto episode 8. Making The title “Coda” (which means in essence, conclusion) more fitting. And from what I’ll mention below you can get a pretty good guess who I have survived their show death. I found Slabtown on second viewing not a bad episode actually. Beth’s death really did ruin what was a decent side plot. It nullified 4/16 episodes immediately and unlike Sophia’s death in season 2, the hunt for Beth and the aftermath didn’t add anything. Beth isn’t even mentioned after episode 10, all that development of Beth being a weak character to a stronger one goes instantly to waste only to be replaced by Noah who effectively has the same basic storyline. So why on earth Gimple would you kill her off?! No characters develop, it makes Tyrese look even worse and furthers his damaged character by making him a pacifist for some reason, etc. It also didn’t help that the only thing that could have been a benefit by keeping on Noah, is instantly killed off 6 episodes later, in which only 3 of those does anything meaningful happen. Which brings me onto Tyreese. Where do I start? Out of all the pacifist characters on the show, Tyreese is the only one that grinds my gears. Dale and Morgan were understandable due to circumstances, but Tyreese being a pacifist feels off. Him not killing that Termite in the cottage was non sensical. Then in episode3 he straight up tries to tell Sasha to forgive the cannibals who ate her boyfriends leg!!!!!! Then his pacifist plan to get Beth back fails and gets her killed and after this he’s like old Yeller who needs to be taken to the back of the barn and shot. Which is what happens in episode 10. His story in season 5 is just depressing in how he went from someone with great potential in season 4 to being pathetic in the next. Which brings up my last major issue of this season, episode 10. That episode didn’t need to be that long. Yes, I understand it can be nice to remember how hard and brutal the world is but this could have easily been done in way less time. I don’t need to see an entire episode of the group surviving, the most I saw from the comic was a brief seen where Rick and Carl discuss how low on food they are. We didn’t need to spend 40 plus minutes on it.

5.10 is a very misunderstood episode. It's supposed to show how desperate they are and really seeing them just surviving on the road, being so broken and desperate, hopeless, aimless. But some people just see it as boring filler. It's preference really. Season 5 definitely didn't fail. What it does best it does so right, the action, horror and tension, but it can't be that constantly. There needs to be down time, there needs to be reflection, there needs to be drama not just constant conflict in our faces. There are some bottle episodes that do really slow down the pacing, and depending on whether you like the character(s) they are centred on, will either be enjoyable or boring. But overall, tonally, this season is perfect. The pacing may be up and down and not every episode is amazing, but enough of them are, and it has some of the most intense and emotional scenes of the whole show

I do agree with you on Tyreese though, he's a beloved character to some but an annoyance to others. And Beth and Noah both died unnecessarily with wasted potential. People will say "it's the world they live in, characters need to die", and while that's true, from a narrative pov, it's a waste introducing new characters or giving old ones the spotlight only to kill them off.

Tyreese's plan failed? They delivered the hostages, took back a healthy Carol and had Beth on their side... Tyreese's plan succeeded and everyone survived. After the plan was finished, Beth tried to stab Dawn. Very different from what you said.

@@denisucuuu only bc Dawn was petty and changed the deal as it was made. Her flaw of having to appear strong to others was ultimately her undoing, and unfortunately Beth's as well. Js. Not exactly Beth's fault, was Dawns.

I do think that if Dale was the one who also died in the show after the cannibal event instead of Bob, that moment would have made me cry a lot. Saddly, it was just meh. That death scene was written for an important character, not a minor one like Bob.

I feel like with the shows, starting with the end of season 4 (from what I’ve noticed) but the finale is usually a cliffhanger, followed with a trailer that doesn’t usually add up to the actual plot of the story, which leads to mystery which got a lot of people hype, we didn’t really know if they were gonna join the terminites or kill them, but it was a badass season 5 opener, but after that they were on the road again which got boring, we see everyone probably at their lowest and just like you’ve been saying about the (I forgot what it was exactly but from what I remember you saying in a previous episode of this series) 1 6 8 16 method, after the opener it was pretty boring, until they take bob, Daryl and carol go off but we don’t know why yet until later we find out why, after Daryl comes back with Noah, but the sad part about that is we don’t progress in the story, we go back in time and get a full hour episode of Daryl and carol running into the car and going to the city, also we get an inside look inside the hospital through Beth’s point of view in another episode if I’m not mistaken, that’s why there’s so many episodes and that’s also a reason why the viewings drop, I feel like season 5 set the foundation for what the walking dead could of become, but instead they followed this same formula which became super repetitive. I’ve tried to get into the later seasons recently, I’m up to date and I got to say.. season 11 is so predictable to the point where I can’t wait for it to end so I can wait and see what the future of twd has to offer with these spin offs and movies if they ever happen.
