Pinpoint Automotive Repair

A true beauty comes in, but unfortunately is having some trouble keeping temperatures cool in the midst of rising temperatures. Join me in troubleshooting this AC system where we apply solid testing techniques that can be applied to many different R 134 refrigeration systems. Techniques used...
Using scan data to identify discharged systems.
Using gauges to identify discharged systems.
Using functional tests to command an output.
Testing an AC compressor clutch circuit.
Thanks for watching!

Hey Joe! I see that someone beat me to it. Yes, ACCR is for a/c control relay. The a/c cycling switch that you mentioned is a pressure switch on the low side to protect the evaporator from freezing. On Ford, typical values for pressure are it's N.O. when the pressure gets around 20 psi and closes again when it gets around 45 psi. When it opens and closes, it disengages and engages the clutch. Nice work on swapping out the compressor and getting her running again. The customer will be remembering you when the weather kicks in around 90 or so :) Have a great weekend!

My truck was completely empty of r134a, I used an “ac pro” recharge bottle, went from 0 psi to “filled” (40psi). But still blows hot air. Compressor is kicking in and out every 10 seconds or so, and the ac pro bottle meter needle does move up and down when compressor clutch engages and disengages. Obviously there’s something else wrong... Any suggestions?

My 5 year old 2014 Ford Fusion Titanium just blew out the AC compressor clutch. This caused a massive system failure which sent metal shrapnel down the EVAC system, clogged up the entire EVAC tubes and destroyed the condenser. Had to get the entire system replaced and cost me $1,800!! Shame on Ford for making a simple clutch issue result in a total systematic failure.

hey buddy you were checking for dye with the light and glasses but i didnt see you add any. Does refrigerant come with dye in it or did you add some off camera. thank you good stuff
@pinpointautomotiverepair1592
@pinpointautomotiverepair1592 7 жыл бұрын
Nope, the PAG oil used in the system usually already has dye added to it. To see if a system indeed has dye in it, all you have to do it take a quick look at the shrader valve, if it glows under a light you are good to go. Thanks for watching!

Initially you looked for leaks w/ blk light and those yellow glasses. How do you know there was dye in the system or did you add dye? Also w/ the severity of the absence of refrigerant you mentioned doing a more through inspection of the system for leaks? I assume you did not find any? I've used dye for multiple different leaks.... sometimes good others hard to say.
@pinpointautomotiverepair1592
@pinpointautomotiverepair1592 7 жыл бұрын
I saw that there was already dye in the system when I removed the refrigerant caps so none had to be added. I find that most systems already have dye in them from previous services or what not, and rarely have to add any to do a visual for leaks. I found no other leaks other than what was discussed in the video during my off camera inspection.

Ac compressor clutch was bad, not the ac compressor. On the older units the clutch could be serviced individually from the compressor. Guessing its easier/faster/cheaper to toss a compressor on it?
@pinpointautomotiverepair1592
@pinpointautomotiverepair1592 6 жыл бұрын
Typically yes. If a vehicle has super low miles on then I may entertain just replacing the clutch, but with as many miles as this one had I felt the best long term solution was to replace the entire unit.

I also have a 2014 Ford Fusion as in your video. However, my AC blows cold are out of the passenger vents only. The driver side blows warm air at first and then blows a little cooler but not like the passenger side. This problem just started yesterday before that it was all working and the air from both sides vents blew very cold air. Someone mentioned to me my actuator for the vents. Not sure if that would be correct.

Why would you consider a thermocouple sub-optimal compared to a dial thermometer? I'd use a thermocouple as a reference to check calibration on a dial thermometer.
@pinpointautomotiverepair1592
@pinpointautomotiverepair1592 7 жыл бұрын
I find that they just don't capture temperatures as well from something like a vent, they work well if you let them sit in the vent for a while and get soaked through well, but for speed reasons I generally prefer a dial type thermometer.
@anyheck
@anyheck 7 жыл бұрын
Triangle Diagnostics Ah, gotcha. The thermocouples I've had with a multimeter we're essentially just the wire junction and had very little heat capacity, but I know the probes come in a lot of styles, so yours might not be like that. Thanks, and have a good evening. .

I have a 2012 Ford Fusion that does the EXACT same thing. My parents were going through the same situation with their 2010 Ford Fusion. They got it fixed. At first they thought it was the Evaporation Sensor, so they got that replaced. But the issue ended up being a faulty HVAC Module.

Just an update... I changed out the A/C Control Module from a used one I got off PartsCycle.com. It worked like a charm! My A/C is blowing cold again! I live in FL so this was a must... I also saved myself $400 by doing it myself. It's not too tough. There's a video on KZbin titled "How to install subwoofers with a factory radio - 2010 Ford Fusion" that will show you how to take off the parts necessary to get to it. I'm far from a mechanic. Took me about 2-3 hours to complete on my own.

Your statement about pressure being about the same as the temp of the room ... Here is what that info tells you .. If you compare your pressure like you did and the pressure is less than the room temp - it tells you that there is NO liquid refergrent in the system - if you have a pressure that is comparable to the room temp tells u there is liquid in the system but you can't tell how much ... So the quick lesson is pressure lower than room temp is sure to be low on charge so start looking for a leak ...

I currently have my 2014 fusion at the dealership service center because driver side blows warm air while passenger blow cold. They said when they tested the actuator for the drivers side it didn't let them manually change the position to open or close the vent. They emailed Ford to see if there is another reprogramming code they could try. I asked whats the worst case scenario. They said if it isnt the actuator then a replacement of the HVAC (I think he said) would be around $700 including labor. Does that sound right? Considering the AC works fine on the passenger side why would it be the HVAC? I'm not super knowledgeable about mechanical issues. Any info you could provide would be amazing!
