I've always liked to think that the reason the Other Father and Other Wybie help Coraline even though it kills them, is because the Other Mother made them love Coraline more than they feared her.

I actually feel like Beldam input the original personalities into the puppets. If you watch Rick and Morty’s Mortyplicity(clone wars). The straw puppets of Rick were conscious of being the fake characters and go along with it. They still love Coraline but as fake Mr B said to Coraline at the final battle. He was once Mr B, but not anymore.

The parents portrayal has always been really interesting to me. We get in this movie the feeling that they are super neglectful, but I don't actually think they are. the Problem is that we see the story through Carolines Teenage eyes. But there are envitonmental hints that something is going on behind the scenes that Coraline either doesn't know or only vaguely understands: 1. The moms Brace. It seems like she recently had a decently major accident, and going by American insurances... that'll mean debt. 2. They just moved seemingly pretty apribtly, Maybe they could not afford the place they were living at before. While the house they live in now is big, it is also pretty old and isolated, so it may actually be fairly cheap. 3. We see that Coraline actually cares for her parents deeply and that she _does_ rely on them when things are getting hairy. This implies that she has had the experience of her Parents being there for her if need be. 4. The mom sais something about a Catalogue deadline, implying that this stressed out air right now is a temporary thing because it is crunchtime before this needs to get to a publisher at a certain date. All in all, I think this paints a picture of Parents who aren't terrible, but are right now financially struggeling and under physical and emotional stress because if they already have financial problems, they _need_ to get this catalogue in before deadline or their srewed, which does affect of course their daughter too. This may also explain why Coralines Mom refused the Gloves. She got them for Coraline _after_ the Catalogue had gone to the publisher, probably in the knowledge that they are now a bit more financially stable, so that she could give Coraline something a bit more expensive.

@@EversPrimeTime It always intruiged me because you are not the only person to react to the parents that way, and i did it myself when i watched this movie first and even a few times after. I actually think that it shows the movie succeeding in taking us into _Coralines_ perspective. She doesn't really comprehend what is goint on, so to her, all she knows is that she is miserable right now and her parents aren't really there for her. Also, I wish they kept a very specific part from the book, that highlights a lesson about bravery that Coraline learns from her father, that it isn't the absence of fear but doing what is right even though you are afraid. It is a wonderful excpert so I'm gonna post it here, because I always found it profoundly moving: "When I was a little girl,” said Coraline to the cat, “when we lived in our old house, a long, long time ago, my dad took me for a walk on the wasteland between our house and the shops. It wasnʼt the best place to go for a walk, really. There were all these things that people had thrown away back there --- old cookers and broken dishes and dolls with no arms and no legs and empty cans and broken bottles. Mum and Dad made me promise not to go exploring back there, because there were too many sharp things, and tetanus and such. But I kept telling them I wanted to explore it. So one day my dad put on his big brown boots and his gloves and put my boots on me and my jeans and sweater, and we went for a walk. We must have walked for about twenty minutes. We went down this hill, to the bottom of a gully where a stream was, when my dad suddenly said to me ʻCoraline --- run away. Up the hill. Now!ʼ He said it in a tight sort of way, urgently, so I did. I ran away up the hill. Something hurt me on the back of my arm as I ran, but I kept running. As I got tot he top of the hill I heard somebody thundering up the hill behind me. It was my dad, charging like a rhino. When he reached me he picked me up in his arms and swept me over the edge of the hill. And then we stopped and we puffed and we panted, and we looked back down the gully. The air was alive with yellow wasps. We must have stepped on a waspsʼ nest in a rottenbranch as we walked. And while I was running up the hill, my dad stayed and got stung, to give metime to run away. His glasses had fallen off when he ran. I only had the one sting on the back of my arm. He had thirty-nine stings, all over him. We counted later in the bath."

The Book actually has something even more trrifying then the other mother and it doesn't even make a move. Ahem: "The wall she was touching seemed warm and yielding now, and, she realised, it felt as if it was covered in a fine downy fur. It moved, as if it were taking a breath. [...]She knew that if she fell in that corridor she might never get up again. Whatever that corridor was, was older by far than the other mother. It was deep, and slow, and it knew that she was there…" The _corridor_ is a horror unto itself. No Rainbowcolored funtunnels here, just a smidge of Lovecraftesque Old Ones Horror. You know. For Kids!

I respectfully dissagree that this is not a children's movie. It's not unhealthy for kid's to be scared sometimes, and this movie is specifically targetted to play on children's fears rather than adult's, and even uses it to teach age relavent lessons.

The parents aren’t really neglectful. They have bills to pay and essentials to provide for themselves and their child. Money doesn’t grow on trees so they have to work and meet their deadlines to get enough of it to live one. Have you ever tried to do important work while a hyperactive child is trying to get you to pay attention to them? It makes an easy job difficult and a difficult job several times worse. Also if this were typical behavior she’d be more closed off and resigned by now. The way she tries so hard and seems so disappointed suggests to me that they are normally more attentive but are going through a rough patch and need to double down on their work. Which also could explain their moving into this third of an old rundown house with poison oak growing around it. The fact that she couldn’t recognize poisonous plants looks so mopey at the place and had such a strong panicked reaction to the bugs also might suggest this house wasn’t an upgrade from their former residence and there are only two reasons to move to a less pleasant place. Evading the police or money problems… her parents don’t strike me as the “Bonnie and Clyde” of gardening book publishing so that just leaves the latter scenario.

"You realize you're walking right into her trap." "I have to go back. They are my parents." "Challenge her, then. She may not play fair, but she won't refuse. She's got a THING for games." The perfect Halloween classic. Fun Fact: The character Wybie Lovat is not in Neil Gaiman's novel. He was created so Coraline would not have to talk to herself and so she would have a friend her own age. Historical Fact: Mr. Bobinsky is wearing the Russian Hero Medal for Service at the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster on April 26, 1986. Which reads on the front "Participant In The Clean-up Campaign" The "4A3C" is a "Chernobilskaya Nuclear Power Plant" indication. This medal is unique as it is the only medal in the world awarded for participation in a nuclear clean up. That might explain his skin complexion and odd behavior. Mythology Fact: The Other Mother's name "Beldam" is an archaic word meaning: a malicious and ugly woman, especially an old one; a witch. It was once traditional on Halloween night for kids to dare each other to knock on the neighborhood Beldam's door (an elderly woman living near them). In many stories, a Beldam closely resembles a spider and lures children into her home with candy and treats, only to trap them inside a cobweb and liquefy their innards with venom. In other variations, the Beldam just traps kids in her home and eats them.

I always took the neglect from Coralines' parents in that they were both working on that gardening catalog for the same job (they must be a working duo) and must of had a very short deadline to get it done, given how aggravated the Mom was and how clearly visibly exhausted the father was. Should they have tried more to not let their work get to them and affect their overall attitudes/demeanor towards Coraline? Yes, BUT it was the motivating factor for Coraline to go to the 'other world' and for her to learn (us included) to not instantly want things to be great all the time and for life to always be perfect because there's always a catch when somethings too good to be true. I always envisioned in the end that they return to their normal selves and treat Coraline better.

I think the brilliance of it is that, as a moviegoer and especially as an adult, you _know_ all of this is way too good to come without strings. And yet, you also get why Coraline nearly falls for it. I made another comment about her parents probably not always being as neglectful as they are shown here, but that doesn't change the fact that _right now_ Coraline is a lonely, attentionstarved Preteen that suddenly gets everyting she wants so much and everything is completly about her. You get it, even if you _know_ it's probably going to hell in a handbasket.

If you should ever read a book by him, I highly reccomend "The Graveyard Book" i eman, also, anything else he has written like American gods, Good Omens (in Collab with the amazing and sadly departed Sir Terry Pratchet), those two got series made for them, Good Omens is especially good and getting a second season! Now, that I'm older I have started to rewatch this movie to make it less frightening, because for the longest time i refused to watch this movie! HAHA! I read stories online abt the ghost kids and their backstories. The pioneer girl’s name was Hannah and she was 13 (older than Coraline) and she didn’t like having to take care of her siblings all the time. She died slowly in pain behind the mirror after the Beldam drained her life. The ghost boy’s name was Timmy and he was whipped by his mom’s sister, Sarah every time he did something wrong. Sometimes he was beaten for no reason. It was the 1700s. His dad died of the plague. Grandma’s twin’s name was Eloise and she fell down the well and discovered the world. Hannah and Timmy first rejected the buttons but after thinking about it they said they’d stay. Timmy was promised that he’d get the buttons off after his mom found a new husband. But Ofc, that never happened. He was the Beldam’s first prisoner. The pioneer girl’s mom was also dead and so was the mom of grandma’s twin. And Ms. Lovat’s name was Edna.

One movie theorist suggests the reason the cat can talk in the Beldam’s world and can understand her in either one and find it’s way in and out is because he was a child that the Beldam tried to steal the soul of but at the last second the soul was able to escape but disembodied and it possessed the body of a cat. @@EversPrimeTime thank you! it's a bit more lighthearted, so pretty much what you were expecting coraline to be like. still has a ton of great spooky moments though!

I don't really think the parents were that mean. Not to the point where I'd call it abuse or neglect. They were snippy but at the same time Coraline was a bit of a brat for a lot of the movie and parents need to be able to put their foot down when their kid is misbehaving. They definitely could've been nicer but they'd also just moved and were probably too busy with adult things to be patient with Coraline. On an unrelated note if you're interested in smaller videos to react to or just watch on your own there's a really good Coraline vs Alice from Alice in wonderland rap battle on KZbin. I think it's by freshy kanal. Kind of a random thing to bring up but it's really good and this reaction reminded me of it.

On the topic of the parents’ behavior, it’s implied that there was a car accident and that it financially ruined them. At least there was an accident that caused her mom to have a neck brace and they had to move due to financial hardship. Could they have handled it better? Absolutely. But if you look at it from the angle of the parents desperately trying to put food on the table for their child then it makes sense.

Love this movie sm. And idk if you’re still looking for movie suggestions but mine are labyrinth with David Bowie. It has lots of songs and it’s pretty weird but it’s a great movie. And also velerian. It’s similar to guardians of the galaxy imo and it has cool alien visuals. Or like cgi visuals ig. Idk but it’s cool
