A Data-Based Diagram of Similar Countries

The data from the Country Similarity Index was used to cluster countries into different regions. This resulted in 9 distinct macro-regions: Western World, Central & South America, Middle East & North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central Asia, South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Pacific. A map of the different regions can be found on this page. However, it may be best to look at countries as a connected web, not as hierarchical clusters, since the data reveals the relationship of countries to each other is more of a gradient than having clearly defined clusters.

It's 2D only because the links can overlap. As the link between Spain and Chile crosses the one between Ecuador and Peru.

0:49 Interesting, here in Norway I'd say we feel like we have more in common with the Netherlands and Switzerland then Germany I'd say. Part of the reason for that is that the center of German standardization efforts where quite dome distance from us, and Germany abandoned a lot of its north german heritage in order to achieve unity.

I'd put more weight on GDP per capita. No matter how similar South Africa and Australia may in in a number of ways, Australia's GDP per capita is almost ten times that of South Africa, and that changes everything.

absolutely, Australia is only the 15th most similar according to the data, its just that South Africa is more similar to Australia than the other 14 countries ahead of it, so it is a spectrum between the two. objectivelists.com/south-africa/

Well, Greenland Reunion and French Guiana (which are not really countries) are missing, and Palestine is not on the graphic either. They can be seen on the map you created. I don't know why they don't appear here

Yes, admittedly the Lux-Czech connection is strange. A quirk of the data showing Luxembourg slightly more similar to Czech Republic than Germany is to Czech Republic. But yes, Germany is number 2 for Lux.... objectivelists.com/2022/06/07/which-countries-are-most-similar-to-luxembourg/
