The Last Homely House

Күн бұрын

I love this time of year, when the garden is slowly starting to show signs of life and it is time to plant the seeds that will be my colour and food later in the year!
In this episode from The Last Homely House I finally get round to the task I have been thinking of for months - re-covering my design boards. I use that board every day and I don't know what I would do without it! It deserves a makeover!
I hope you enjoyed this video to the end - I love my sparkly new lights!
If you celebrate Easter, I hope you had a happy one! I have been hunting eggs in the garden with my Granddaughter Agnes. This is more tiring than you might imagine!

You remind me of a lovely neighbor who lived behind us when I was a child. She was always so busy in her yard and kitchen and would invite my sister and me over to help with her chores. We were in 7th heaven! Her name was Mrs. Harrison, and although I’m 62, memories of our times together lies sweetly in my heart.💕

I got so busy yesterday on Easter Sunday, that I totally forgot to watch Kate! 🥺 But as always, even a day later the chat is so inviting and comfortable. Loved all the plantings you're doing. Can hardly wait to see them as they grow. 🥒🥕🌺🥀🌼🌱Recovering the design board looked so easy. When my hubby put mine up, he screwed it into the wall; so no sliding it out and redoing it for me....but it's still in good shape. I love your twinkling lights and the sounds of the birds at night. Hope you and yours had a good Easter Sunday as well.

I have read that every layer of covering over plants keeps them 5°F warmer (2+°C?) so putting the little greenhouses inside the hoop house is quite good protection. Just be sure to open everything up if you get a warm, sunny day! I loved seeing the design board recover. I don't think the join in the middle will bother you. Use it as a reference point! I love seeing someone my age making such nice videos. Hugs and Blessings from another Granny in South Dakota, USA.

Hello Kate, I just came across the your The Last Homely House and truly am enjoying the respite from other KZbin channels that seem to go on and on about the chosen craft. Your channel is chocked full of so many different crafts -- much like the way my mind works! I enjoy so many different crafts -- quilting, cross stitch, knitting, crocheting and many others that I would like to try. Also, you have taught me so much about how cats seem to want to be with their human family. My Zoey is a small cat that used to cause me some "fear" because she bit me quite often. For that reason, she spent quite a lot of time by herself. Now she wants to be with me, and since I spend time with her when she and I are both more calm, she sits on my lap and wants to be with me when I am alone. I love her dearly and I think she is as comfortable with me as I am with her.

I'm also an avid sock knitter, but they've been put on hold for now while I sew. I always smile when I dry my dishes with one of your tea towels. Kate, You Tube is so fun - the last video on my list was from Franklin Habit; a US Knitting teacher who crochets, sews, cooks, bakes, and oh so many lovely things. He went to a fiber arts show in Paris (where he now lives) and for well over 3 minutes focused on historical patchwork pieces. Not quilted, just made and often lined and the entire 4 minutes, I was mentally shouting: "Kate should see this, it's SO cool" OMG so stunning. And wouldn't you know, one was hexagons!!!!! Many were well over 100 years old and still gorgeous. Then, while Agnes's quilt was foremost in my mind, your video comes on and there's her Monet hex blanket!!!!! What fun. My seedlings are coming up, I'm already picking tomatoes because during the freezing nights, they were brought indoors and so were the pepper plants as well as one strawberry plant. :D Happy Spring to you. I wonder if Agnes would freak out if she knew how many people from all over the world are fans!!!!!! Southern California here, in the high Desert north of Palm Springs but at a higher elevation so we actually get a bit of snow each year.

Ricky Timms showed a great idea of how he cleans his design board. I have tried it and it works very well. I take a piece of freezer paper and place the paper shiny side on the board and iron it. The shiny side sticks to fabric when iron, so when I pull it off the fibers come with it. The paper can be used many times.

Just watching a second time. I do think it might be best to leave that "seam" in your design board as it is. If you lay that extra fabric flap over top, you'll still have a "seam" on the board, but it will be a raw edge, and rather flappy. The present seam seems more secure. Plus, much of the time you'll have fabric up there, covering over the seam, so it will look fine. Great work! How nice to be able to just lay pieces up there and have them stick.

Lovely to see you back in the polytunnel again. It's got me thinking about seedlings... Meanwhile, re: design boards or 'walls': I've owned mine for over 15 years. I bought a long (8 ft) piece of blue insulation material (a type of styrofoam, very dense) from a hardware store (what you call a 'builders' merchant). I split it in half and gave half to a quilting friend. The other half -- about 4 ft wide by 2 ft deep/long (top to bottom) I covered with a synthetic type of batting called 'thermolam' (I think). I simply nailed it up in my sewing studio. Whenever it gets filled with threads, I clean it with a lint roller (tape) et voila! Like new! 😊

Those stars look great! Looking forward to visiting in the summer and sitting in your wonderful garden!! We are so lucky in Northumberland right now with lovely weather, the trees in bud and spring arriving. Having said that - we could still have snow!!

I think the line down the middle would be easier to work with than an overlapping flap. It looks lovely.

I always watch you and find your charming way so agreeable to many, especially me. You put me to shame. I don't know how you keep going. I have chronic kidney disease, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. I just can't do much anymore. I love that you can and do.

Nah, the join is fine. Nothing like a large design board to let your imagination loose. Mine is two 4x8 insulation boards, duct taped together, and covered by batting and a king sized white flannel sheet. It is marvelous.

I'm so glad you showed us your bored. I want to do one, but I wasn't sure what fabric you used to cover, so fabric will stay up on the Bored.😊

How can I not love everything that you do and share with us. When your days are finally over and you breathe your last breath, you will know that you lived every moment in it's beautiful present. You have given to each and every one of us the gift of your daily life. I live more beautifully in the present because of your example. I have no idea of your age but it's so refreshing to see somebody who is living behind their twenties, thirties or forties still creating. Sending lots of love your way.

I’ve been working on a quilt top today and absolutely love seeing how your design board works. I don’t have much room here so I’m a bit envious. I was glad to see your ironing board propped up with a cover as well worn as mine is. ❤️ Thanks for taking us outside to your garden, too. Happy Sunday!

You have really inspired me Kate! I have made my design board and dragged out my hexie quilt I started last year. Today, I learnt how to postage stamp quilt after watching your video, and my seams nested so perfectly! Thrilled to bits! I am now sitting down with my mitred square knitting in front of the telly! Thank you for all you do, Hugs from Tropical North Australia x

This was genius. I have though of scattered planting by times flowers bloom, but not spacing out gardening to harvesting smaller amounts for longer. This was very helpful. Thank you for your lovely channel.

I love the new design board. I think eventually you won't even see that seam down the middle.

Hello, Kate! It reached 5*C here this afternoon. I’m was getting pots ready with potting mix and will need to bring them into the house to warm them before planting my canna lilies. I won’t be able to put my lilies out until the end of May. We could get a frost until the first full moon in June, but I’ll be away camping by then. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻I love both sweet pea and morning glories on my trellises. I’ll need to start those as well! John’s such a clever fellow! Such a great solution for your design wall I’ve ordered a portable design wall that is constructed with a ‘tent pole’ frame-held together with internal bungees. Can’t wait to get it! So Looking forward to see seeing Agnes’s quilt! Stay well, Kate! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦

Kate, great job with your design wall. I think that if you leave it the way it is, it will be helpful to keep block straight in both directions of the line as you put blocks on the design wall. That material is perfect.
