hmong sweet pork, or braised pork belly ~
This dish is a hmong food I grew up eating, but I know other cultures have slight variations of this under a different name. Food is something we all have in common, so.. what do you call this?
✨written recipe + measurements
- jasmineandtea.com/braised-por...
📝 grocery list
pork belly, skin on
eggs
garlic
lemongrass
ginger
galangal
sugar + water
oil
salt
low-sodium soy sauce
oyster sauce
fish sauce
dark soy sauce
**all of the ingredients I use can be found in my amazon storefront
-- www.amazon.com/shop/jasminean...
Don’t be intimidated by this slightly lengthy list of ingredients. This recipe is extremely simple - even a beginner cook can do it! Most of the cooking time is completely hands off and you’ll be left with the most tender pork belly that’s soft enough to be cut with a spoon :)

Oh my gosh! It’s so nice to finally see Hmong food influencers! Everyone I watch that cooks food is always Korean and I’m like…”dang, I wish people could understand how good Hmong food is!” Thank you for making this video from one Hmong person to another!

This reminds of of a dish my Mimi makes called “pork and egg” (idk how to pronounce it in Vietnamese). My dad married a wonderful Vietnamese lady and I love anything Vietnamese. I’m not Vietnamese myself but I love the culture I was adopted into. My Mimi is everything to me and I love her so much. Especially her cooking! I’m happy to see something that reminds me a a little bit of home. Thank you so much 😊

Try palm sugar instead white sugar.. since it's made from coconut, it adds more aroma big time.. Or you can use sweet soysuace instead, i'd recommend Bango brand☺️

Honestly If find it best when you let it cool. Not only will the fat freeze over making it easier to remove but letting it sit in time will let the flavors develop more the eggs get better flavor from the broth.

We do it with Fish, Pork, Chicken and even Beef. Instead of sugar, we use palm sugar because it's more fragrant and the colour is prettier when caramelised, also palm sugar doesn't crystalize as much as sugar so the meat wouldn't be tough as left over. Some recipe include using pineapple, sugarcane or tomato.

In my culture we call it stewed pork and add carrots and onions. Rather than it being a sugar sauce, we burn the sugar and add the pork and then the liquids. Of course the pork is seasoned 1st with our green seasoning or dried seasonings.
