The 2022 FIDE Candidates Tournament is an 8-player double round-robin that will decide Magnus Carlsen's challenger for the 2023 World Championship match, or, if Magnus decides not to play the match, the two players who will battle it out for the title. There is also a €48,000 top prize at stake. The venue is the Palacio de Santoña, Madrid, from June 17th to July 4th. If players tie for 1st place there will be a playoff on July 5th. No draw offers are allowed before Black's 40th move.
The players get 2 hours for 40 moves, then 1 hour for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment only from move 61. A playoff will feature two 15+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 3+2 blitz games. If still tied the players will keep playing single blitz games until one of them wins. If more than two players tie for 1st there will be a mini round-robin. Official website: worldchampionshipcycle.fide.com

Yeah, Magnus is worried about his rating so he play safe and not take risk. In Norway chess 2022, he draw against Aryan Tari who is a 2650 rated player like 200 points lower than Magnus. And,then we have Nepo he is beating Ding(36 elo higher) with black pieces. NEPO Should win World Chess championship 2022.

Magnus pulled off 4 wins in 6 rounds (including 2 with black) against Ian himself in WCC 2021 although that was against a Nepo in a losing tilt, making trivial blunders. However Nepo is doing it against different opponents in the toughest chess tournament. It's truly remarkable.

Gotta feel for Richard though, he had the spirit to fight on and not settle for a draw, he knows his position is bad if he keeps fighting but he insists in the spirit of the game, Nepo honoured his will by brilliantly and brutally taking him down. Welp, I guess Nepo is heading straight towards another WCC.

Bro I can’t feel for him. He went into a situation where he was down 1h on the clock and got into a position where he had no winning chances! It was on the best case a draw. Hikaru even talked about that in the interview after his game. He had 0 winning chances… that was just dumb to be honest.
@EMIN3MFAN96

@@danielveloso9998 that is def one way to look at it. Winning is very important, but at this stage of the tournament it makes sense for Rapport to take big chances like that. His chances of converting a win were extremely small but still worth a shot imo. A draw would just further solidify Nepos lead. Aside from all that though, you gotta respect him to a degree for keeping the games interesting and decisive. Rapport has always been a very creative and interesting player

@@jx14aby sooo funny lol being a beginner, part of me admires rapport’s determination to play out a game that was a draw. The other candidates seem way less impressed though - (dont remember exactly what but) fabi said something to the effect of ‘that position had been solved 10 years ago, so rapport trying to play it out for a win was pointless’ I think they’re in sort of a different boat; it makes sense how hikaru could be disgusted by it if he’s thinking that it’s foolish or maybe even disrespectful to continue trying to force that line

@lucasmatsuoca
@lucasmatsuoca Жыл бұрын
I think Magnus just have way more emotional balance and consistency, giving and example, some days Magnus is not the best player in the world, he underperforms, but he still plays like top 10. And it's very common to see Magnus winning games after a defeat. Nepo in the other hand, when he is not in his best days, where he can play head to head against Magnus, he plays like a top 100, and if he loses a game he usually goes into a tilting defeat streak. Consistency and emotional balance are more of a factor than raw chess talent and skills in this matchup. Caruana is a lot more stable and consistent, but i consider Nepo a more talented player when it comes to "raw" chess skills. Wesley So is another player i consider very talented, as much as Nepo or Magnus, no surprise he is the chess 960 chess champion, too bad he didn't qualify for the candidates.

Rapport really helped Nepo to gain lead. First he choose drawish line with white then tried hard to loose game by playing inferior position. I agree with Fabi who said he was upset. Nepo is playing some worderful chess. But this game is gifted. This takes to memory lane during cold war era where it was suspected soviet players were rigging their matches against each other. Nepo is worderful gentle man.

Agad explained Rapports reasoning... But it also fits a known axiom that is taught to us in transition to a higher level: "recognize your role". ie if best is to play for draw, don't play for win.

I think that beginners admire Rapport for his courage. Meanwhile GMs are perplexed/ disgusted by what they perceive to be a reckless choice of a loss over a draw. Happy for Nepo, Fabi is on his tail.
