Koln, or as Americans call it, Cologne. 4711 is famous over there. A bit strong. I was stationed in Deutschland 4 times with the Army and DE shaving seems to dominate there. It's easy to get brushes and soaps.

Not sure if already mentioned in the comments but 4711 was given out to German U-boat crews during the war to help keep them fresh in the hot and cramped conditions. I also read that not a lot of them actually used it and it got sent back to loved ones at home. Pretty cool history really. Also, a gallon of gas in the UK would cost about $8. meep

Nice shave, Ken. I love your videos. 4711 Eau de Cologne reminds me of my grandmas using it with a handkerchief as an refreshing towel. A long time it was the typical "Grandma scent" in Germany. Ahh, the Shavemac brush brings back memories for me as well. I grew up using the Atra when I learned how to shave, then discovered wetshaving on my own yrs later. In 2011, I bought my first quality shaving brush: a black handled, finest badger 24mm Shavemac. I loved boar (and still do) but man oh man, that gave me a real appreciation for and love of badger hair brushes.

Great video, Ken! Two other german staples when it comes to after shaves would be the green version of Pitralon (the red one of course being originally swiss, but very common over here). It's called Pitralon Classic, even though it's the newer version from the 60's. The other one would be Tabac original. My grandpa (born in 1925) used it for most of his life, as did legions of german men back in the day. Lavender, oak, chamomile. Very "niche" smelling, but highly recommend!

Nice shave despite the nicks. The 4711 reminds me of my dad, as he used to wear it. On a different note, I ordered some Pinaud Clubman shampoo off of Amazon and I highly recommend it. Classic barbershop smell, cleans the hair well and enhances the thickness of your hair. If you haven’t tried it you should!

I’m like you Ken, you have to be very careful on what blade you put in the R41. It’s a beast but gives the best shave out of all of my razors, but it’s not forgiving or for the beginner. Also, I clicked on the link for the 4711, but don’t see how to order. Thanks for all of the videos. Best on KZbin because you meet all of your subscribers on a personal level. Blades I like to use in it are the Gillette Wilkinson Sword or the Astra blades.

Question Ken 20 year old here trying out wet shaving. what directions do you shave for 1st, and 2nd passes? I just got into wet shaving with a safety razer and when I shave ATG and WTG I get a ton of tugging. I use the van der hagen blades and am starting to think the blades are very cheap lol just curious because I seen the video you made with the vanderhagen and it seemed you went flawlessly with it.

@@msan2653 - Yeah, That's what I thought 'til I tried it. I was used to the Razorock mj90 A-plate... also, a great razor. With the right blade, the r41 is definately doable... but, it is the blade choice for sure. It brings the best & worst out of every blade. Believe it or not, I've achieved irritation free shaves with it. It's not scary, like everybody says. I like Muhle's description best... vigorous & efficient. Completely unyealding. Like a lawnmower on grass. Work of art 😉

This was the Mühle Sea Buckthorn version. My first impression of the scent was slight lemon turning into orange ending up in citrusy yellow and green apples. A scent for sunny days. The scent of the sandalwood is a bit disappointing to me as a bit weak.
