I think in the "market" of fully assembled keyboards, even with all those "non-custom" options available, the Keychrons are pretty competitively priced. That does not mean that the market isn´t overall inflated in price^^... I think it is crazy, how much some of the parts cost, and quality is realistically not justifying these prices at all.

My barebones V1 came a few days ago and i used EG Aqua King switches that i spent 6ish 7ish hours lubing. I also got some really good budget keycaps. The spacebar sounded terrible, but i put some packing foam in it and it made it sound acceptable. for my first custom keyboard with a really low budget, it is really good and sounds exactly like how i would want my keyboard to sound. i also started to learn how to type properly without looking. in just a day i can do it pretty slowly, but its a good start for one day

I bought a V1 after watching Andy's Emogogo video, and I'm impressed. The sound isn't as good as my Bakeneko, but that's actually double the price which is insane. The V1 also makes a much better gaming keyboard as the front height and typing angle (which is adjustable) is much lower than the Q1. It's an easy buy for the money, and while the stabs aren't perfect it's easy enough to fit a Durock V2 in the spacebar.

keychron is awesome. I got myself a q3 and love it. I modded it though. I'm useing lubed box inks, replaced the plate foam with pe foam (there's not enough room to fit both), used lubed owlstabs, tape mod, force break mod, and I used keybored's butylene sound deadener and even a little case foam. it's a ton of mods, but I love the end resulting sound. oh, and the keycaps would be domikey single chip.

Keychron and Owlab are the 2 biggest players in keyboards right now IMO. Keychron is making the hobby accessible and Owlab is innovating like crazy.

There’s also Akko but they’re kinda awkward due to lack of availability and their weird love for north facing switch orientation. And there are also a lot of small designers who are innovating it’s just they use the group buy model so they don’t get the funding to bring their idea to life and don’t get as much coverage.

@@kaeroseon from what I know, north facing LEDs are cheaper to manufacture due to the more mature manufacturing process since every other non-enthusiast company like Razor/Corsair/Logitech uses north facing. Akko probably wanted to use the cheaper manufacturing process to improve their manufacturing plants before switching to south facing LEDs.

I´ll always try to get some "bang for your buck" but with keyboards I only had e-waste so far... and it is a real shame that we are not at the point yet were you can just buy a "normal" keyboard and have it work for more than two years. Just opted for the V5 and so far so good, although the plastic housing can screek a little if you push on the sides (not in action though)... hopefully this one will by reliable.. unlike the sharkoons, razors, and corsairs... at least with this I might be able to get my hands on some replacement switches easy... keycaps seem to be an issue with DE iso... hope these do not break so easily.. they seem quite good, although the DE Iso keychron keycaps seem to be ABS.

my first mech keyboard is Keychron K2V2. It was pre-lubed. It is hot-swappable and only took me around 1hours to add more lube on it. Very easy, very cheap too.

I like that you can mod the V1 also. More so with the space bar. Sounds like someone dropped two cell phones flat on the ground. Fully kitted out either one is about the same also, most mods are cheap and just some lubes, band-aids, tape, foams, and a soul or two. The V1 can go vs 200 keyboards and does well. Like them things that DROP sell, or even a GMMK pro. All need mods to really shine. The V1 is more a sleeper though, and well that is fun too. The V1 came out great and I cannot wait to see that they do in the future to pander to the entry enthusiasts market. The aesthetic is like when you need a chair, and do not want it to look like the seat in a Viper, just a pleather coated, comfortable office chair that fits you butt well. Can do everything a gamer chair can but does not look ridiculous.

Take a look at the akko 5075s barebones it's a 60$ keeb with a ton of foam and its gasket mounted and hotswap (it comes in 4 different colors). The bad thing is that it's plastic. it'll be a great competitor to the v1.

I loved the RK boards, I have a full size hot swap. The switches are crazy rattle-y but it’s an easy enough fix for sure. Loved the comparison between the two.
