I can't imagine why ppl think the guards (or some of them) are abusive to the horses. They all have different temperaments, as do the horses, and some guards may not feel as comfortable showing their affection in the public gaze, as this young man.

A few years ago when the IRA planted a bomb which went off as the horse guards were passing by. The injured soldiers crawled to their dying horses to comfort them as they both lay dying. That's how much those soldiers love their horses.

These soldiers are really fortunate. If I was there I would feel I lived in a totally different era, isolated from the cheapness and the lunacy of the modern world. The old relationship between a cavalryman and his horse. There is a famous story about a French cuirassear (his name escapes me) and the special relationship he had with his horse throughout the napoleonic wars. During the invasion of Russia, he often detached from the main army to scout for forage, and he and his horse survived all the way to Ligny.

My great grandfather worked at Althorp stables working with horses and race horses owned by the Spencer family, that of the late Princess Diana. He was known as a horse whisperer in the racing and training community and his exceptional gifts of communication with horses were highly respected and sought after. He travelled the country helping owners with sick horses or those that failed to be trained. Looking at this young man, I have the distinct feeling his respect and understanding with the horses he works alongside is at a similar level, something that many of us will ever experience or understand. It is a shame that so many of the visiting tourists that go to see the Royal Horse Guards are unable to give even an iota of respect to such well cared for and highly trained horses. He is indeed an excellent soldier, but also a respectful humanitarian. 💞🇬🇧

An even weirder connection my family has to the royal family is that my late mother left secretarial school in 1943 to join the royal family’s London based law firm Farrah’s & Co (law firm to British monarchs since the 1700’s) as a legal secretary. My Mum was the typist that was entrusted to work on all the legal documents surrounding Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1952 after her father King George VI passed away in February of that year. Mum also typed up all off the documents regarding Queen Elizabeth’s first will and testament as Queen. Mum had to sign the British official secrets act when she started the job, so if she ever spoke out of turn publicly, she would have been held for treason against Queen and Country. Everything she knew about the British/European royals, aristocracy and famous celebrity clientele, any hushed dirty secrets, they all went with Mum to her grave. The royal family have always been known as ‘The Firm’ but Mum insisted their lawyers were absolutely terrifying to find yourself on the wrong side of. Anyone at Farrah’s was quickly dispensed with under the watchful gaze of government officials if they dared to be loose lipped. Totally useless but a little bit of interesting information!!🤷‍♀️👑🙂

Joking aside the professionalism of these Squaddies in the face of boorish behaviour is exemplary - if my TA battery had been put in their role there would have been teeth and bloody snot on the cobbles.
