To military, "covering fire" means lay down suppresive fire so that the enemy can't shoot back. To police, "cover me" means aim your guns at the building in case anyone inside starts shooting. Imagine the officer's surprise when he said "give me cover" to national guard troops as he tried to stealth towards a barricaded suspect.

Depends of what Unit and the parameters of the mission. As MPs, we were trained 2 different ways. Started out with the old school MOUT training. Toss a grenade in the room, and spray it down on entry. More modern techniques was SWAT style training, breach door, enter the room with a clearing team, no firing unless engaged by enemy. And covering the bldg, do not engage unless breaching team comes under fire, but stay vigilant, eyes scanning for movement, and reporting the contact to your team leaders.

This has always been something that I've found interesting when it comes to sci-fi. Like other species would most likely, if war was not as ingrained into them and the true understanding of the horrors of it as it was for us, just fight and destroy whatever they wanted not realizing that they just signed their own death warrant.

Them telling humanity to “hold the line” basically means “we’re nearing our last stand” or “if you fall were screwed” It’s a very grim term for a human soldier but it’s a command that’s always followed, it’s culturally synonymous with death and is when many a soldier finds their way to Valhalla and the fields of Elysium or wherever else they may go

"We continue to broadcast our surrender and a plea for mercy. They have not responded. We can therefore only conclude that we stand at the twilight of the human race. In order to buy more time for our evacuation transports to leave Earth, we ask for the support of every ship capable of fighting to take part in a last defense of our homeworld. We will not lie to you. We do not believe that survival is a possibility. We believe that anyone who joins this battle, will never come home. But, for every ten minutes, we can delay the military advance, several hundred more civilians may have a chance to escape to neutral territory. Though Earth may fall, the human race must have a chance to continue elsewhere. No greater sacrifice has ever been asked of a people but I ask you now, to step forward one last time, one last battle.....to hold the line against the night. May God go with you all."

The humans, I think, knew they were doomed. But where another race would surrender to despair, the humans fought back with even greater strength. They made the Minbari fight for every inch of space. In my life, I have never seen anything like it. They would weep, They would pray, They would say goodbye to their loved ones, then throw themselves without fear or hesitation into the very face of death itself, never surrendering. No one who saw them fighting against the inevitable, could help but be moved to tears by their courage, their stubborn nobility. When they ran out of ships they used guns. When they ran out of guns they used knives and sticks, and bare hands. They were magnificent. I only hope that when it is my time, I may die with half as much dignity as I saw in their eyes in the end. They did this for two years. They never ran out of courage. But in the end, they ran out of time.

Because it is mine I will not falter. Though the horrors of the dark may come and make themselves known. Like barbarians of old, they throw themselves at our defensive lines. Baying for the blood of all those we hold dear. For their sake and the sake of my children who sleeps safe in their bed. I will hold the line.

"Hold the line" is a powerful phrase, in my opinion. Especially when any following words are followed by a refusal to give up even when the line is broken. For example, "We held the line. And when the line broke, we grabbed it with broken and bloodied hands and we fucking held it!" Granted - it loses a lot of meaning when overused. I think the story in this vid used it at just the right amount.

“You all know the mission and what is at stake. I have come to trust each of you with my life, but I have also heard murmurs of discontent. I share your concerns. We are trained for espionage. We would be legends, but the records are sealed. Glory in battle is not our way. Think of our heroes: the Silent Step, who defeated a nation with a single shot. Or the Ever Alert, who kept armies at bay with hidden facts. These giants do not seem to give us solace here, but they are not all that we are. Before the network, there was the fleet. Before diplomacy, there were soldiers. Our influence stopped the rachni, but before that, we held the line. Our influence stopped the krogan, but before that, we held the line! Our influence will stop Saren! in the battle today, we will hold the line!” -- Captain Kirrahe

"Everything that you thought had meaning: every hope, dream, or moment of happiness. None of it matters as you lie bleeding out on the battlefield. None of it changes what a speeding rock does to a body, we all die. But does that mean our lives are meaningless? Does that mean that there was no point in our being born? Would you say that of our slain comrades? What about their lives? Were they meaningless?... They were not! Their memory serves as an example to us all! The courageous fallen! The anguished fallen! Their lives have meaning because we the living refuse to forget them! And as we ride to certain death, we trust our successors to do the same for us! Because my soldiers do not buckle or yield when faced with the cruelty of this world! My soldiers push forward! My soldiers scream out! My soldiers RAAAAAGE!" -Erwin Smith

"Somewhere in the universe a coin flip lands on its side. Somewhere in the universe a drop of water saves a life. Somewhere in the universe a pebble stops a landslide. Maybe it is because someone believed hard enough. Maybe it is because everything is secretly fair. Maybe it is because the universe is a vast place. Yesterday, I was very cold. Yesterday, I was very hungry. Yesterday, I wanted to run away. Today, I am going to believe hard enough. Today, a pebble will stop a land slide. Today, I am not going anywhere. Today, I will uphold my duty And until the end, I will hold the line!" I think Human Interstellar Conglomerate, or possibly Terran Interstellar Conglomerate, would be a good name for organised colonisation and expansion into space. Still partial to The Imperium, either the Imperium of Man or Terran Imperium. However, the former is more realistically workable as it implies a conglomeration of various largely co-equal organisations, political entities, and/or governments not all of which would have complete control of entire worlds. Whereas an Imperium has an implication of centralised control and a single government structure spanning multiple worlds, which is unlikely to happen with humans. There is also a question of whether to use Human or Terran in the terminology, depending on if we recognise other intelligent creatures from Earth among our ranks.
