Family friend had one. One time he kept nudging the owner after she went to check her incubator and when she asked him what was wrong he gently dropped a baby chick from his mouth at her feet completely unharmed. She didn't notice a chick had hatched and fell from the incubator so he picked it up to keep it safe. Absolutely amazing dogs.

The first time I was introduced to this breed I was probably around 13. My dad was playing in a football tournament and I was talking to some people who had one. I asked if I could pet him, and they said "yes, but be careful, he's overly friendly". Three pats was all it took for him to stand up, push his paws against my shoulders, and just straight up pin me to the floor. I never stood a chance and I was at the mercy of this overly friendly slobbermonster. And I loved it. He decided to lay down ON me. Heaviest cloud I ever pat though.

Pyrs don't miss a damned thing. Ever. My Pyr is a rescue that I adopted when she was just over a year old, and even though I've had her for almost 4 years by now I still have to let her sniff everything. Literally everything. It could be a new leash, maybe a replacement harness (she has a habit of breaking collars and harnesses), maybe I just bought a new pair of boots or gloves for the winter, maybe she sees me pull an old winter jacket out of storage, whatever. It's an enemy she never lets out of her sight unless you give it to her to sniff first. I even lost a random key in a fresh snowfall last year, and her nose found it found it for me. They're amazing dogs, really. And they're the most genuinely and deeply curious dogs I've ever experienced. But nothing ever escapes their attention or their nose.

The first Great Pyr I saw was at a seaside resort. He spent his days lying in the middle of the driveway to the property, forcing everyone to slow down and drive around him. Maybe because it gave him a chance to eyeball all visitors. The rest of his time was spent in periodically patrolling the entire perimeter of the property, beginning first thing in the morning. A beautiful, no-nonsense creature who took his job seriously.

Well said! They spend some energy on patrols at dawn and dusk, but mostly they conserve their energy napping. All that energy gets gathered up in their huge bodies for that one moment when the coyote or the wolf appears. Then the DOOM music kicks in!

"... they tend to ignore commands and do as they please." Ms. Vanessa, truer words were never spoken! LOL The only time you may rest assured they'll come when called (or respond to a command), is when there's food in your hand. Love my Pyrs so much!
@RevShifty
@RevShifty 5 ай бұрын
I'm very lucky, in that my Pyr is very well behaved and well trained. She even got compliments from the vet on her manners, which I've never heard about a dog before. When she listens, I can get her to respond to vocal commands, tongue clicks, even hand gestures and gentle leash tugs. When she doesn't feel like listening, though, she just blatantly ignores the hell out of me. Thankfully, she doesn't ignore me often. And I discovered that I can use her heavy play drive to get her to change her mind quickly. As long as I make it seem like listening to me means play time, she'll listen twice as much and perform twice as quickly.

Something you missed that is important to some people-- Pyrenees fur is one of the few dog furs that can be made into yarn. I remember back around 2002 the top ranked Pyr on the West Coast could always be found because the owner would be sitting ringside knitting. She collected all of his blown coat from the time he was a puppy until he retired as a show dog at (I think) 4 years old and knitted a cardigan for the handler.
@monicapdx
@monicapdx 5 ай бұрын
I'm a handspinner, and I *wish* Vanessa could sell the fur! I have 3 bags of blown Samoyed fur, which will be somethng gorgeous some day. Fur from most medium to long-haired breeds can be spun. You usually blend it with some wool so it holds together without having to give it a super tight twist. That'd make the yarn harsh, instead of soft and fluffy. Wool has little scales that grab each other. Dog fur doesn't. A small percentage of wool blended in makes it hold together instead of slide. I'll bet that was the warmest cardigan the handler ever had!

I used to have a Siberian husky mixed with a Great Pyrenees. Her name was Sweetie and was the best dog. She never barked in the house, only outside. She would patrol the house and keep everything in check and in order, the same with the yards. Great call back, she could be walked without a leash and was very friendly to everyone. I miss having my big white fluffy dog and seeing Mr. Murphy get groomed was so sweet - his coat is so gorgeous.

Even once a bull snake from the playground on the side of the house where we played !! If we were hurt she sat with us till an adult came I had 8 aunt's and uncle and there were 33 of is grandkids harvest time was the best! Lady was amazing ! Her partner was Sammy! Country life can be something else! My dad was one of 13 kids (4 fosters), my mom one of 8. Attempting family stuff with just one side of the family is bonkers. That said, we're doing it this New Year, first time in 5 years, I'm so excited! A few of my cousins-something-removed (kids of my cousins?) are now old enough to DRIVE, it is so wild. I held them all as babies. I'm getting them all roadside assistance memberships. Because gawd, the one time you need it, you NEED it. Like when a tractor tire FALLS OFF and halfway to the parts and repair place your car blows a tire and the spare in your trunk turns out to also be flat. That was a day. 😂

We have a mix of Great Pyrenees and Golden Lab, with the Pyrenees being the dominant half. Basically every bit a Pyrenees minus the extra extra floofiness as he has mostly a lab coat (but still has that undercoat, and for as little of it as he has damn it gets furry in the house). They are wonderfully chill..... unless you have a nature area past your backyard with coyotes that come and go.... then they go from 0 to "OH... I'ts gonna be THAT KIND OF DAY!!!!" in a split second. As in you just see all this muscle come out of nowhere as he runs up to the fence to warn them off! Quite amazing to see in person. But you forgot to mention the worst trait of the Pyrenees, the marking / digging!!!! They do the thing where they moonwalk backwards to rip up the grass to mark the area and make it seem like there's a bigger pack to warn off other animals. They are so damn effective at this in that a single swipe can pull up a divot of grass right down to the bare dirt below, leaving a lovely bare streak! Hence unless you like re-doing your back yard every year, you have to keep an eye on them.

My childhood dog was a Pyrenees we named Monster. Sincerely the sweetest dog I've ever met. He was so unbelievably patient and kind with all the kids in the neighborhood. Like, he was so loved for being a sweet boy we had to tell our neighbors to stop buying him his own tacos every time they went to taco bell lmao. He was best friends with my sisters Miniature Pinscher, and when he was blowing coat she'd end up with a little beard of his fur from playing with him. In the winter we'd go out to see my sister's dog as well as a random assortment of local outdoor cats cuddling him for warmth while he looked like he was in doggy heaven. Thought he was a lap dog too and broke more than a few chairs crawling into my lap. I don't think I could get another unless I somehow moved onto a massive tract of land, but man I loved that dog.

So I don't have any issues with other stubborn breeds, it's the easy going dogs that trip me up. Just know that if you ever did end up with any of those kinds of dogs, you'd be jumping into the deep end. I love the giant breeds and the attentive care they provide, and I wouldn't change a moment of my time with them for anything. But it wouldn't feel right not to mention that possible character trait if you ever do get so lucky.

If you have a local animal shelter, they probably need volunteers for walking dogs! They might also have a room to socialize with cats.

I had a Pyr. We showed in obedience, and she won her CD obedience title in March of 2001 at the age of 10 months old. 3 shows, 3 legs for her title. She was the first, and to the best of my knowledge, the only dog from her breeder's kennel to ever win anything related to obedience. She was also a registered therapy dog. I lost her at the age of 11 years to lymphoma. I miss her very much because she was the sweetest dog ever. RIP Pyrless Blizzard of Odds CGC, CD, call name Flurry. 😥

As for the difficulty getting them to train for obedience, guardian dog breeds have to have decision making skills because they don’t have a human to give direction in the field. They are bred to make their own decisions, so they do all the time.

My best friend and her husband had a GP when their kids were young. His name was Bear! He was absolutely the sweetest dog ever! Treated the kids like they were his own! He had a large piece of land to guard, loving every every moment of his multiple rounds per day. He could often be found at the end of the drive so that he could let the family know when both friend and stranger were arriving on the property. He was very attentive to commands....when snacks were offered, unless it had to do with keeping the kids on the property and out of trouble! I miss that big, beautiful lug of a pup! He was a "leaner" when he wanted pets! He would lean against your body to let you know it was time for you to love on his gorgeous fluffy body. A truly gentle giant!

Vanessa- Thank you for explaining what dog breeds were trained for, & what home environments suit them. I have always thought that Siberian Huskies were beautiful dogs & I wanted to get one. I live in an apartment so I knew that some breeds of dogs aren't suited for that home environment but I didn't know which ones. Well, anyway, there was a campaign to adopt dogs from shelters & I found one that had 2 Siberian Huskies, one was a few years old & the other was a senior dog. After speaking with the shelter person, I realized that my home & my lifestyle were definitely NOT suited for a Siberian Husky. I was disappointed but I certainly didn't want to get a dog that wouldn't be in a suitable home. So, again, thank you for educating us, your KZbin viewers.

I loved during the blow dry at 2.40, when Murphy lifted his head like "oh yeah, right there" I also liked where he investigated Vanesa's ear. The dogs of this breed From my childhood, if Vanesa hasn't pulled away Murphy might have liked her ear. Which is an "experiance" and a reason to run for Kleenex and cotton swabs!

This was so nice to see! We had a great pyreneese, family member, not a work-dog, was such a gentle and loving dog. Well.. he tried to be gentle, one little paw-swipe can knock you over if you're squatting, and his claws could leave marks :D He always greeted every single family member with great joy and excitement, even the ones he only saw a couple of times in his life. We taught him not to jump on people, but he as VERY vocal in his greetings. Really miss him.. they don't live long enough...

Seeing this beautiful boy made me smile. I had a Great Pyreness as a child and his mannerisms are so similar to my big fluffy girl. The only difference I noticed is he allowed you to touch his paws. Mine would always hide her paws as soon as you put your hand near her foot.

My family's dog is a pyr mix, and while she's smaller and is a great deal less fluffy than a purebred pyr, she sheds *constantly*. And, of course, because she's white, you can see the fur everywhere. When she sits on the couch she leaves a crater of fur behind. She's also definitely got the pyr attitude, she really picks and chooses which commands to follow.

Long time sub, don't normally comment but since I work in homebuilding and specifically in QC, I have a recommendation for you. The paint you see coming off the edge of your door at 0:02 is due to someone caulking the joint between the door jam and stop on the hinge side. Cut the caulk out of that joint then repaint, and it won't keep grabbing the paint of the edge of your door.

A few years ago I read an inspiring story about a wonderful Great Pyrenees - I think his name was Odin. Odin was a livestock guardian for some goats. His humans had to flee the California wildfires and he refused to go with them as he wanted to stay with his goats. They had to leave without him. They later returned, sadly expecting to find Odin's remains. However, they were pleasantly surprised to discover that not only had he survived, he'd managed to save EVERY SINGLE ONE of his goats, AND a few small deer he'd rounded up from somewhere. What a hero!

My sister has a half Pyr... his personality is pretty much a Pyr, those he's scared of strangers. We took him to obedience school, private lessons, and a 2nd obedience school, he never got over it. We didn't know anything about Pyrenees, and I'm shocked that none of the instructors said anything about the breed. He was 10 before we found out what they're like. He's 13 now, we pretty much let him do as he wishes, he's too old for anything else. We love him.

I've got a Great Pyrenees x Spanish Mastiff. Fortunately he's got the Mastiff coat and not the Pyrenees so he's not as much of a challenging groom. He's definitely got the Pyr attitude that you described though. Very calm most of the time (for a 7 month old pup at least) and loving, but also extremely stubborn. I thought my Bullmastiff was stubborn, but this pup is next level.
