8:50 Yup, they call it "punching up" dialogue. One of my pet peeves. A lot of the time it makes the lines slower to understand or obscures what's laid out simply in the original. I constantly find myself understanding better when lines are translated faithfully.

I genuinely love how people actually made a meme out of it at some point. JP:"I'm gonna beat you up!" Heavily localized:"Are you thirsty? Because I've got some punch!"

Thank you for doing this. Exposing bad translations-localizations is good work, and the format you use is easy to follow (and probably unique). It boils my blood too when I encounter them.

9:11 such a simple concept yet so many localizers cannot wrap their heads around it... or so I'd like to say but it's always done on purpose. they want to insert their own shit so that they feel they are a part of the game. it leads them to believe that their "contributions" are why people like a game, which is why when someone critcizes their work they get all defensive. their ego cannot handle it.

That is actually why the core concept of "localization" of making dialogue flow better for improved understanding is often just called a more "liberal translation" while the idea of rewriting something is often called by the localization-term. Even beyond mistranslations and untranslatable things, the general audience came to account for the possibility of a western version being entirely seperate, which is why one is for example not going to hear some people state the 4Kids version of the Yu-gi-oh anime as a dub of the japanese series, but as a seperate entity that is enjoyed or not enjoyed on its own merits rather than how faithful it is. It kinda sucks that mediaculture actually had to evolve in that direction, but that is sadly the way of things.(Though ironically, even in that system, "localizations" are largely considered outdated compared to more accurate stuff, simply because shared and worldwide releases exist. People reasonably are going to want a more faithful translation of an RPG when it is marketed as the same international product and contains the direct japanese script in the same package.

If this hasn’t already been said in a previous video or comment section but Nob Ogasawara pretty handled the localization of these games up til Generation Four. He had only little if that hand in translating the most proper nouns; moves, Pokemon names, or important locations or characters. Only the text found within the games. So most of the blame can be nestled in his hands. Many of the more egregious localization was just him doing stuff without much push back.

Yeah I know all about Nob I just choose not to name him in my videos because I want to avoid direct confrontation with him. I’ve seen how he reacts to criticism after all.

@@Ackermin So you are aware of him. Yeah that is probably for the best.

Lmao the anti localization crowd and them overusing the word "egregious" XD These changes are SO insignificant, but you're constantly exaggerating them as well as misinterpreting.

12:50 Ponaya Tunguska appears to be a shortened form of the transliterated name of Podkamennaya Tunguska in Japanese (ポドカメンナヤツングースカ).

In other words, it's a REAL place. Got it from the wiki.

Okay so you’re saying if I write a book about a place called Shmengland that is actually a real place because the name comes from England. lmao no

I dunno, Ponyta's Japanese PokeDex entry states it can clear a leap over Tokyo Tower despite Kanto already existing. Though you might be right because that line is still in the recent games.

There are many references to the real world in both the Japanese and English versions of the game like the journal entry found in the Pokémon mansion that references South America. However, at least from what I can see, the Pokémon world as it was in Gen 1 was meant to be an analog of our world and not a direct copy. Many places have similar or even exactly the same names but the way they exist is wholly different. The Tokyo Tower and South America may exist in the world according to Gen 1 but based on what we know about Kanto they are most likely very different as compared to their real world counterparts.

Then it seems you clearly have once again not done enough research on this. The Japanese fanbase is in pretty much universal agreement that it is the real place. I'm not surprised you aren't familiar with this. You're reaching quite a bit with your proposition.

This is a very interesting series! I've always wanted to check out the original Pokémon games, since I know some stuff was toned down arbitrarily. Thank you for your work!

It must be annoying to switch between the versions so much. Although I get annoyed just by the text speed difference of the English versions

0:53 Except it still is the same in meaning. They both dont like his presence. It's not 1 to 1, but it is still the same. 5:40 Those alternative names are horrible lmao. Your criticisms of that are laughable. Really? You're upset they didn't reference the round aspect again? That's really petty, even the most anti localization people don't stoop to that lmao. 4:12 Are you really having an issue with that? Not that it's new, but seriously. Why is that even worth criticising to you lmao. At least give decent arguments. All of your criticisms boil down to you finding it weird, deliberately misinterpreting it or being really nitpicky with the differences. 11:17 How was that funny in Japanese? I think your sense of humour is just weird lol. And that still has the same meaning. You're purposefully ignoring that aspect constantly. 8:05 The problem is you're scraping together random pieces of information, trying to make some warped interpretation of the Japanese dialogue that wasn't intentional. They're just throwaway lines for comedic effect and they're translated in a way that conveys that. The fact you elect to ignore that is not good. And in all honesty, i don't see how you interpreted the Japanese as him speaking to only one brother. He was clearly speaking to more than one.

14:48 That's still the same in meaning and you're still not understanding how this text space limit works. This is another laughable criticism. 16:07 Thats literally identical in meaning. All youve done is say "lol this different, so bad!". 16:29 That's such an insignificant change. Especially since it is the same in meaning. How you interpreted that as his character being changed is beyond me! I've heard similar types of characters in other media say things like "you got an appointment with the boss?". The heck are you on about "royal guard" for lmao. 20:44 That is not an adequate criticism, especially to purvey this idea you've made for it being a poorly localized game. The same goes for almost every single point in this "series". 21:55 Where was it even mentioned elsewhere? You didn't even say where else it was said. And a quick look in the text dump, the exact term is only used one other time. Not "time and time again". And you're exaggerating this flawed consistency argument, not to mention the fact that it isn't even a good reason to call the localization bad lol. And are you really going at the localization mentioning he lost again and you go on to say it’s horrible? More exaggerating. 22:53 That’s your best criticism yet, and it still isn't that good lol. His English dialogue never states that he was never going to return. In fact, the "i shall return" line at the end seems like a direct reference to his intentions to go at Silph again. And you claim it is spoiled. Literally nobody i know or have even heard of had the 8th gym spoiled from that. You are just trying to find reasons to hate on it with that 😂
