My fuel cap story...Late December 96...Bosnia (NATO not UN). I had a 10K GenSet (DED) that kept running out of fuel. Kicked my butt for weeks (no support no parts). I couldn't figure out why or how until I was holding/fiddling with the fuel cap cussing and carrying on trying to figure out why...I noticed the center pin wasn't 'springy''...I replaced the cap and BOOM goes the Dynomite! Victory! Crazy how we can't see the forest b/c all the trees are in the way. My fuel cap story

Cool, I just ran into the "non-venting" gas cap and was wondering about these type caps, no pinholes. I have never had this issue before I took apart my carburetor three times. Then finally, I figured out it was the gas cap. And to add insult to injury, this is a new tank, I replaced it this season. The old one had a leak. And I was doing my normal spring maintenance stuff. Started right up sounded good, started mowing and it did the sputtering thing. Of course, the first thing I thought was I did something wrong with my carb cleaning. After the 3rd time, I searched the internet and of course all it said was carb stuff. After a day or so of searching, I finally ran into the mention of the gas cap. I said no way, it's freaking brand new. After doing the simple fuel flow test, low and behold, it's the damn gas cap. Luckily, I didn't throw out the old tank, yet. I put the old cap on it (15+yrs old) and no more venting issues. But the old one is beat to hell on the inside & the new is...well new. It's for a Briggs & Stratton engine. That's what I get for buying a generic replacement $36 vs. $56. But damn $56 for this gas tank...SHEESHED. LOL

Good to know. I wonder if putting a non functional cap into an ultrasonic cleaner would be helpful.

I have a Crapsman Lt1000 riding mower. After running it 10 minutes it shut off. Ill restart it and it will fire up for 2 seconds then die. I can do this till the battery dies. Ive tried 2 different carbs from Scamazon but the same result as mentioned above. I ordered a new gas cap, hoping this will fix the problem

How do you know the gas cap is bad? I have a bad boy mower and it’s not pulling fuel from the side with the blade controls and ignition but it pulls from the opposite side. This just started happening.
@donens93102 жыл бұрын
Great video. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that vent system not so much a tank vent but to maintain that tanks fuel pressure to those levels. Wouldn't a tank vent have the duck bill the other way around?
@robbieaussievic2 жыл бұрын
...... The inner part of the rubber valve opens to prevent a vacuum forming, (as per previous video). The outer top seal of the rubber valve opens to release pressure when the liquid expands (ambient heat). I will stand corrected if wrong, as I enjoy learning.
@donens93102 жыл бұрын
@@robbieaussievic I'm confused. For the duck bill to open, doesn't the tank draw air from the atmosphere into the tank.
@robbieaussievic2 жыл бұрын
@@donens9310 ..... Yes, including water vapour depending on humidity. We are only talking small amounts but expansion/contraction every day for the period between use. Don't fill the tank until it's needed, avoid a full tank that sits for extended periods.
@robbieaussievic2 жыл бұрын
@@donens9310 .... P.S. It also expels fuel vapour when the liquid expands. That why the fuel lowers in octane level and becomes stale, harder to ignite, less power etc.
@donens93102 жыл бұрын
@@robbieaussievic I agree. But what opens the duck-bill, since the fuel vapour can't open the valve since only outside pressure will open the valve.
@jose1620022 жыл бұрын
From my own experience that check valve ( Vinton or neoprene) will get chewy and soft from fumes over the years and will almost glue itself so it won't open or aloud air coming in. You clean it and only will solve it temporarily. Better replace it.... good job #mowermedic1

If I can take it apart it’s “serviceable”! Jeez - a pocket screwdriver and anything else to fit in there and it pops open and a readily available check valve? How is this NOT serviceable?

Up here plastic grocery bags are band, I have to drink my pop from a paper straw. But when lawnmower plastic gas cap fails I'll just throw it in the landfill and buy another. Makes a lot of sense!....you're not even helping out the local economy cause the cap is made overseas.
