Here is my Rode Procaster Microphone Review.
The Rode Procaster dynamic broadcast microphone aims to compete with ElectroVoice's more expensive offerings and packs some OOMPH!
While not quite as clear as the ElectroVoice RE20 and RE320 mics, this microphone is really great quality for the price!

Very helpful video! In my case, I think you helped me save the cost of the mic :^) -- not because it's bad, but because I'm concerned about the potential need for investing in the Cloudlifter as well. (I have the Focusrite Solo. so not very different from your interface.) I like my AT2020, and for me, the only reason to switch to a dynamic mic would be to avoid the noise that can come with a condenser -- or, as you point out, with having to boost a dynamic mic that has low sound to begin with. So that was a great tip. Interesting that the AT2020 was your earlier choice. I'll check your old videos to see if you did a direct comparison. Thanks!

Good thing about the Procaster is that I find you don't need a fethead. My zoom uac2 at level 7 is equal to it at level 4 with a fethead. So you still have 3 notches worth of gain left.
@EposVox

What’s your opinion on this mic with a mixer (Mg10xu) vs an interface (Scarlett 2i2 or 4i4). I currently have an at2020 and am wanting to make the shift to an xlr set up. I was originally going to get an at2035 but am thinking this might be a better option to cut out my keyboard clacking. Which would you suggest (both for the mic and mixer vs interface)

I'd love to hear a comparison between the Rode Procaster and the EV RE-20. Obviously Rode was trying to create a mic in the same vein as the RE-20. I'm wondering if they managed to pull it off. A "poor-man's" RE-20 would be a useful animal around the studio!

Cloudlifter and Fethead (same price) are the only option for that sort of thing. You can buy a dedicated powered pre-amp unit like a Nady or anything in that market - but they're going to be much bigger and more cumbersome for your needs and finding one that you also don't need a CL1/Fethead with is gunna be very difficult

Hi there, Listen... I have a lot to say... Firstly, I'm in a minority, I don't like Rode products at all. I worked in two different documentary projects that were filmed with the 5D Mii and the VideoMic Pro and I was impressively UN-impressed. Granted, it is not an "expensive" mic but the results didn't seem stable or faithful or reliable. It is very good (for the price) when you're in-doors, without any RF interference and your subject is sitting near a wall but that's very specific. On the other hand while using the 7D as a B-cam and shooting outside we found that there is nearly no distinguishable difference between using the VideoMic Pro and not using a mic at all! (i.e, using the in-built camera mic) which is a terrible result for Rode. In addition, I have used the SmartLav+ and found it to be one of the worst microphones I've ever seen (and since my brother is a successful musician and own a big recording studio and this I've seen many many mics in my life that means something) and more so and perhaps this is purely a matter of taste but I honestly don't like their sound at all. It may be a tad more radioy than their competitors at the same price range but for a few more dollars (or pounds in my case) there is always a better option that is most definitely worth the money. Here too I never liked the sound of the Rode Podcaster until this very review! You seem to know your business and that got me interested. On the other hand it may just be that you have mastered post-processing to maximise the result and suit it best for your voice. I can't figure out why you're not using a portable pre-amp. I have the Scarlet and while it is useful it is hard to drive with (better if you use a double USB cable) it and the pre-amping is not as clean. At the moment I'm using the DR-60D Mii. I was not familiar with the Cloud CL-1 and would be interested to watch a video review on it. I would also appreciate a video which shows how you take a raw recording and process it because your results seem better than mine. Look, in the end of the day my favourite mic is the Sennheiser MKH 416-P48U3 (or 416 for short) and I really do think it's the best sounding mic I've ever seen. I'd prefer it over the Neumann U87. I understand that the Neumann U87 captures more yet the reality is that even someone like me who has a DAC and professional headphones can't hear the difference once it's been processed through YT or podcasts. Of course, it costs a thousand dollars! But what is the difference between the Rode Podcaster and the EV RE20? Sure if you look at the "price" it looks like a lot more but in reality if you are willing to spend "that much" on the podcaster then what we're talking about is the difference, not the initial price!
@EposVox
@EposVox 8 жыл бұрын
Whoo long comment! :D Alright, I want to note here first that your examples and preferred mic and usage scenarios are ALL for on-camera work and focused around shotgun mics - whereas this is a desktop/vocal mic, they're not at all comparable or usable in the same situations. I do have a Tascam DR-40, but my usage for these mics is recording at the computer; I need a clean straight-to-PC input, and the FocusRite (or my Behringer Mixer which I end up using more often than not) does just that. Plus my Focusrite 2i2 is one awesome DAC for my audio listening. While the pre-amping isn't always clean once I apply a LOT of gain, in terms of actual raw audio recording, my Focusrite interfaces are the cleanest audio recording solution (again, for the desktop) I've used. (Though my experience is limited.) My previous interfaces were the couple different Behringer mixers I've used - all of which produce a TON of their own electrical noise internally and do not end up sending a clean signal to my PC at all, especially when I'm using (filtered, but still noisy) PC audio inputs for many of my line-ins. Buying the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 was like a dream come true to finally have a completely electrical noise-free interface. But the CL1 is my pre-amp. It's ridiculously clean and has made a huge difference. I've yet to figure out how to review it because it's a very simple product and I have nothing to compare it to, but I do want to feature it somehow. You place it between your mic and your interface, turn on phantom power, and boom - free 25DB of super clean pre-amp. Again, that Sennheiser mic - while I've heard great things about it - is a shotgun mic, and typically shouldn't be used for normal desktop VO setups. In a studio they might be okay if your room is sound-isolated, but in a normal desktop/podcasting setup (aka a half-studio lol) shotgun mics aren't clean enough. They pick up the ambient room noise to a degree, and you only have a small cone of direction to keep your mouth in or your vocals start to sound funny. But it's a great mic from what other KZbinrs have said, but it's flipping $1k. I've not heard/tried that Neumann one, but given its price point, I can't imagine I ever will, haha. Having a full comparison review between this and the RE20/RE320 coming very soon (ideally Friday but I still have to edit it) but the RE320 is a lot clearer and has a much nicer high-end, where has this mic seems like it just keeps a heavy low-end but muffles it up a little. But, it's all about the audio processing and someone who knows it better than me might be able to pull better sound from it. I have limited experience with it; having only just learned what I needed to get by so far. Thanks for the thoughtful comment, I appreciate it.

So I thought I might as well ask you... I moved to England six months ago so I don't have a lot of gear with me. I have a YT channel (not this one obviously) where I'm making videos and I'm using the Blue Spark as my main condenser with a Mogami Gold going straight to my DR-60D-Mii and I'm happy enough with the results. I also have the Blue Yeti which I'm considering just selling because it seems quite unnecessary once you have the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and the Spark. I also have Beyerdynamics 700 which I don't use at all (they are similar to the Shure SM58) but regardless of my video channel I also want to start something that is a bit complicated to explain so suffice to say it's similar to a podcast and may one day evolve to a podcast but to start with it will be small bits that I'm writing and want to present them as voice only (possibly music as well but you get the point). My house doesn't have a sound proof room. When I'm doing videos it's ok, a little bit of ambiance is even good but clearly when it's sound only it'll be unforgivable if people could hear cars, etc. After quite a bit of looking around I have a feeling that the best option will be the EV-RE20 however the main "problem" is everything else that comes with it... the mic itself is roughly £300 in the UK but the shock mount is another £100!! And the foam pop filter (which I need) is another £30!! That's just straight on crazy to me. To top it off, if I were to add to that something like the CloudLifter or the FetHead and that's another £70-£130. Assuming I still want the RE20, what other options do I have (that you know of) to replace the expensive EV shockmount and/or foam pop filter or anything else for that matter? I mean for Christ sake! I just looked at the type of gear Joe Rogan is using in his podcast and the Mic-arm he's using is £300... for a bloody arm? WTF!
@EposVox
@EposVox 8 жыл бұрын
If it's on an arm, you shouldn't need the shock mount unless you plan on moving it a bunch. There are plenty of cheap mic arms that will work fine with you, and the foam windscreens/pop filters are cheap as well - amzn.to/1Zy7ag7

The NT1-A has an exceedingly bright sound that can be pretty brittle on male vocals, and if you don't have room treatment, don't bother with a condenser. I'd recommend just an SM57 and add some low and high end. will save you a ton of cash, as the procaster is about twice as much, but they sound essentially the same. I bought the procaster and wish I'd got a 57 :P

We just picked one of these up and it seems to have a nasty background hiss. We are currently doing some testing with our other mics that include real cheapies, and NONE of the others have hiss. All recorded in the same conditions so something seems wrong with the Procaster.
@EposVox

Not "wrong" with the Procaster, it simply requires a LOT of gain compared to other mics and the higher you push a mixer/interface's built-in gain, the less clean your signal will become which is why I recommended additional preamp assist devices. Also if you're using the same gain level as other hotter mics, you then have to do software amplification which can add hiss. Or I guess there's a chance you got a bad mic, but less likely

Thanks for your reply. I have a Zoom H1n coming shortly, I am wondering if that would work as a pre-amp or should i get a dedicated pre-amp for the Procaster?
@EposVox
@EposVox 6 жыл бұрын
Zoom H1N can't even take in XLR mics in the first place and definitely can't sustain the power needs of a dynamic mic like this

The H1n arrived today and just as a matter of interest I hooked it up to the Procaster. The h1n was on full gain and to my surprise it actually reduced the hiss significantly. I do have a proper pre-amp coming so it will be interesting to see how much better the sound gets with that. I put a brief video up comparing the different mics we have and you can really hear the difference between the Procaster going direct to the PC and then recording on the Zoom.

Hey Man, i know this video is old, but i have a question. I got now the procaster and im having big problems boosting it in audition without clipping. Works perfectly with Reaper, but not in audition...
@EposVox
@EposVox 7 жыл бұрын
What do you mean? Just bring up the levels without going past 0db. It shows you the waveform so you have no reason to accidentally clip with it.

i just dont know if its me (probably its me), but when i run some filters to remove the background noise (especially the hissing) the volumes of the voice go bad. Im trying to avoid noise gate, but i guess i wont have an option...
@EposVox
@EposVox 7 жыл бұрын
Adding things like a compressor can cause the waveform to go past 0 db, but as long as you bring it back down before saving the edit or applying another effect, it doesn't clip. Audition usually does a good job of saving that data until you commit it.

No idea if you'd see this but could you help me? I'm looking to get this mic and I'm just wondering if I'd need a "cloudlifter" some people say some Dynamic need them. Thanks

You'd benefit from it, but don't need it. A good audio interface will suffice.

Hi. I have the rode procaster and i connect it to the Zoom H5. I can tell the quality differences between the Raw and the prosecced recordings as shown in this video. What is Raw and what is prosecced actually? and how do you create the prosecced quality (which is obviously better)? thank you

The mic this video is actually recorded with is the Sennheiser AVX. I just reviewed that recently - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqKWpnp-m7qtnsU But for what I use for desktop mics, I will be going back to this mic (Procaster) soon, as I do have to send the RE20/RE320 back to EV. But Ideally at some point soon I can buy one of those.

Hi EposVox, can you please tell me. Are your videos Monetized? as it seems embedded ads like you have are against KZbin policy and Monetization should be barred. Can you please elaborate? I assume on videos with embedded ads you turn off Monetization? as suggested by KZbin?

This is a front address. The only way the mic ever hands/positions is with the addressable end being at the front. Dynamic mics don't stand vertically like condensers (Yeti)
