The Charity Cup is the 2nd of 9 events on the $1.6 million 2022 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour and takes place on chess24 from March 19-26. World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen tops the 16-player field, which will be cut in half by the 4-day round-robin Prelims. The total prize fund is $150,000, with $750 for a win and $250 for a draw in the Prelims. The quarterfinals and semi-finals are 1-day, 4-game matches, while the final will feature two such matches over two days.
The players have 15 minutes for all their moves, plus a 10-second increment starting from move 1. In the Prelims there are 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. If a tiebreak is required the players will play two 5+3 games and then, if needed, a single Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website: chess24.com/tour

Kinda sad to see Ding’s chess career hindered due to the pandemic. He has to play these online tournaments at night, he can’t get a visa to compete overseas, and the onset of the pandemic kind of affected his initial performance in the candidates. I just hope he, and all other chess players, can get the opportunities to exercise their full potential for the world to see.

G Lissitzin Leningrad 1956, Sicilian defense To those of us who worry about the safety of the king, Tal,s play in this game is a joy and a revelation. Tal realizes that the power of the king increases as the game progresses and as the pieces come flying off the board. By the time the ending has been reached, the king is truly a formidable fighting piece. Watch Tal,s king stroll nonchalantly into the heart of the enemy camp, gather up a couple of pawns, and then prepare to escort one of his own pawns to the queening square. A Freudian slip. He knows very well what a smothered mate is, he covered it a lot on the channel.

@@cheya111 I don't think it was a freudian slip (that has a specific meaning, not sure what you think he'd have in his head that would make this Freudian), but of course I know that Antonio knows what a smothered mate is.

@@SamuelPearlman His mind thought about a smothered mate and he said it. Simple. It actually happened to me a few weeks ago, the reason I am defending him. These knights checkmates are beautiful after a sacrifice, we should all give them a name even when it is not the actual smothered mate.

Magnus did say that Ding is one of the few people that could give him real trouble for the WC, but also said that Ding probably doesn't have the variety in his game to move out of the candidates.
@ex0duzz
@ex0duzz 2 жыл бұрын
Ding is top two top three by rating, and always beats Carlsen, what you mean he doesn't have variety in his game to move out of candidates? Everyone has good or bad days and one bad move is all it takes to lose a match or tournament. You can't make generalisations on a players skill or game based off one candidates or one tournament, let alone one game.
