The Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz is the 4th stage of the 2019 Grand Chess Tour. The 10-player tournament takes place in the St. Louis Chess Club from 10-14 August. The prize fund is $150,000, with $37,500 for 1st place. 7 tour regulars, including World Champion Magnus Carlsen, are joined by wildcards Leinier Dominguez, Yu Yangyi and Richard Rapport.
The rapid section on the first 3 days is a single round-robin with a time control of 25 minutes for all moves and a 10-second delay from move 1. The final 2 days are a blitz double round-robin, with 18 rounds of 5+3 blitz. Rapid games count double, with 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw. A 2-player tie for first will be decided by a 2-game rapid mini-match (10+5) and, if necessary, an Armageddon game (5 vs. 4). Official website: grandchesstour.org

I was in St. Louis as part of a family vacation. We didn't realise that Rapid/Blitz was happening then. We went to the chess hall of fame, which is across from the St. Louis chess club wheee this was held. My parents payed for me to enter so I could watch one of the rounds. I watched this game happen along with Karjakin vs Caruana's draw 3 feet from the players. It was awesome. Excited to see your analysis!

in 3:14, 13. Qb3was played by Ding, a really strong and brilliant move to be mention was castle(13. O-O), sacrificing the bishop, well, it's not actually a sac, cause you will get the piece back due to tatics, but in the end of the variation, white remains a lot better, for anyone curious about this variation, analize it with an engine or by yourself

what a beautiful discovered check at the end. 'last move' is referred to as a 'spear mate.' when i was = 25 i ran into an old Professor & chess master at a local coffee house. i asked him for a game. he said: 'yeah, i can spare 10 minutes.' i defeated him by playing this exact mate; the 'spearing mate.' similar to a 'smothered mate.' that was a good day.

Hello fellow humans, Leela would like to add the best missed win during this game: At 9:10, the best move for white was actually c4. Your rook is under attack and you cannot play Qb5 anymore, so what are the options? If you'd play -...a5 - Nice counter-attack, but I can just take your knight. (+3,67 - Qxb6 Rxe5, Rf1 Qd7, c5 Rg5, c6 Qd5, g3 Rh5, c8=Q...) -...Rd7 - I can just play h3 and play this out, the other c-pawn is coming (+3,83 - h3 f6, c5 Nc8, Bd6 e5, Bq7 Qd2, Rf1 Nxd6...) -...Rxe5 - ...and you are just down the exchange after Rxe5 Qd7, after which I eventually push my other c-pawn... (+4,49 - Re1 Qxc7, c5 Nd5, Qc4 Qc6, Ra1 g5, g3 h5...) Have a wonderful day, Leela (All searches are done to 4.0M nodes with the 42850 network, no TB)

Qd1 Qh5 perpetual. If you try to escape that by playing Kg3, f4 check will open up a discovered attack on undefended white queen. After Kxf4 Qxe5, Kxe5 there's no way for white king to infiltrate the position. It will be a draw.

I can't see moves, so can someone explain why at 11:02, the winning move couldn't also be to queen the pawn? Rook can't immediately capture, because of the mate potential at G7. I know that MC's queen can harass DL's king a bit (H5 > D1 > H5, etc.), but I think it's all a waste of time and either the king walks up near his queen at E5 or there is a queen exchange at some point ... leaving DL with a Queen-Rook against MC's Rook. This would also offer an improvement to Agad's oft quoted phrase -- my favorite endgame is the one where I have a *queen* and my opponent does not.

at 6:25, why doesn't white capture the rook on d8, followed by capturing the bishop on b7?

Ag you missed an opportunity to show some interesting resources. After black plays Qc7, you can ignore the threat and sac that bishop to get a good attack. Check it out. Also the position at @11:45 is called the Swallow’s Tail mate. The two pieces near the king look like the tail of the bird called the Swallow.

11:15 Wouldn’t it be better to first promote the pawn, and after rook captures Queen to g7 is checkmate. Am I missing something?

That's what I saw too. Not sure what I missed, but maybe black doesn't capture the queen and somehow hangs on for a draw?

@@shailendrakoyande Absolutely. I've pointed this out to several others who asked the same. You need to consider everything with chess; it is easy to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Sorry if the question is too dumb for most here, but why can't Ding simply play e5 now at 1:17? Because of Nxe4, Lxd8, Nxc3, bxc3, Bxc3+? Would that really be an davantage for black? Or is there something else I miss right now?

doesn't rxe6 not work at 9:53 because black has rxd4 in response? preventing mate and threatening to take the rook next move? I guess the queen can jump in to g6 but idk if that's a forced mate or not tbh

Question: in 11:21 could it also be pawn to C8 and after black rook captures, white queen to G7? Wouldn't that be checkmate as well?

3:41 I think a really good move is white bishop capturing e6 pawn. No matter what white is winning the exchanges and also much ground
