A Modified Car Can still be "GREAT FUN" without making it ILLEGAL? - Police RS MODS inbound!

In today’s video, we take a trip to REVO HQ to not only see what they have planned for the Mj performance Police Focus RS project but also find out if it's possible to have a tuned performance car while still being on the right side of the law, in this instance, the REVO Mk4 Focus ST sets a great example.
Revo are very well known within the car community, so as you can imagine it was an honour to take a look around and get a chance to meet the team, not to mention collect some amazing parts for our Mj performance POLICE Mk3 Focus Rs.
The main question still lies - Are pops and bangs Road legal if done right?

Interesting video and I haven't seen any of the Police RS series so a bit out of the loop as to whether it's actually going to be used by the police afterwards or what's the purpose, but I guess that also is why I was confused why you didn't just buy the Revo SPS switch or some of the hardware here and just go to Revo for the purposes of promotion or for a little less back but I guess they've been very generous. Some of the other stuff such as wrapping or big brakes I can understand is more expensive but it's sometimes interesting when bigger channels gets loads of free stuff when they would probably have more disposable income to buy the things outright or make it back somewhat from ad revenue, e.g. Shmee with his Clio V6 build :D

I read somewhere on revo that a map wont wipe itself if battery goes flat, you are saying different. I'd like to know

It won’t wipe the map from the ECU it will sometimes switch it back to the standard map so you just need to switch it back to the REVO map with the sps switch.

I have Revo stage 1 on my Fiesta ST 180 and it's fabulous, do wish they could make cat safe pops and bangs for it though.

When did Ford get rid of the 2.0 for the ST’s? I always thought they kept it and got rid of the 2.3 as that was in the RS and mustang!

The mk3 st had the 2.0, the mk4 has the 2.3 from the previous generation RS, simply because ford got rid of the RS for the mk4

Surely pops and bangs are louder than 72dB (a toilet flushing) which is illegal in the uk? This is what stopped me getting a professional pop and bang map.

@@anilkalsi6026 No spacers are fitted, the RF0 Revo wheels simply sit really well on these as specifically designed for this fitment, the stock suspension is impressive on the Mk4 ST, there is a concern about ruining them if lowering, stance wise it sits well, if it were for the VW scene then I could imagine people may want lower but for me it's perfect, handles brilliantly and looks great without any concerns for catching the underside.

@@hugheszie That may be the case but I'm sure it only does it under very specific conditions e.g. aggressive throttle inputs etc. No 'from the factory' car is going to be banging and farting down the street IF driven sensibly appropriately for the area it's being driven in. I suspect that most people who say about banning 'pop and bang' maps aren't really thinking about the odd 'from the factory' car that can be made to do it occasionally by the driver and are more bothered about some absolute 'cock womble' in a heavily mapped RS4, bouncing off the rev limiter in a residential area and all anyone within a 2 mile radius can hear is "pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang". (I'm also not a massive fan of popping and banging, especially when it's done to excess, there's really no need for it)

I think this video leaves a certain amount of ambiguity regarding what is legal and what is not. Although the exhaust may be "road legal" because it has all the correct components fitted, if you drive that Focus ST in a residential area with those pops and bangs, you are going to get a fixed penalty for either "modifying the exhaust system to increase the noise made" or "driving in a manner as to cause excessive noise". As soon as you move away from the stock exhaust system (that has undergone extensive testing at the factory to ensure it complies with EU/UK sound regulations) and fit your own after market system, you open yourself up to prosecution. By all means, on a track, be as loud as you want, but I would urge caution when you buy these aftermarket exhausts. If you are going to produce a video that is entitled "road legal", I think your friendly traffic officer needs to be providing the advice rather than someone who works for Revo who of course is going to want to sell lots of exhausts!

I agree with the basic point but I also have no sympathy for anyone that thinks aggressively stomping on the loud pedal to trigger pops and bangs in an urban area in an acceptable thing to be doing. Even with that map on it, I doubt the car will be popping and banging IF driven how a vehicle SHOULD be driven in an urban area. I understand that someone with an overly loud exhaust could even be pulled for it on the motorway (in theory) but I suspect most traffic officers will consider the environment the vehicle is being driven in at the time AND the way it was being driven e.g. bouncing of the rev limiter in an urban area is automatically going to get the officer's attention!

Revo don’t sell exhausts tho.. it’s all about a time and a place to be honest. I probably should have got more rules info in the video but the st is an example that you can have power and a nice sounding car while remaining road legal. You don’t need a decat to make good numbers. The rules are confusing. This is why we’re trying to over the videos we make, make it more clear. My apologies if I did that incorrectly

@@GCMYT Please don’t allow me in anyway to discourage you from making such videos. They are well needed in the car modification world. However, when you have someone bouncing a car of its limiter, causing pops and bangs and you then ask if it’s road legal and they say it is, it gives the impression that as the exhaust is road legal, the pops and bangs it produces are perfectly legal also and no matter what you do with the exhaust it will be legal. I just don’t want our young aspiring car enthusiasts to get mislead, which I’m sure was not your intention. I think it’s a great video to showcase what Revo do and maybe would suggest retitling your video as such and do another video with the traffic officer regarding exhausts. Keep up the good work though! 👍🏻

Given that Revo explicitly stated that they don't deal with vehicles where any of the legally required emissions hardware has been removed, I think we have to assume so.

Fully road legal and rather refined when not on the loud pedal, it's the Milltek 'Resonated' (quieter option).

@@stevew4340 but majority of millteks exhaust kits are "cat back" systems, replacing all exhaust components from the cat backwards would remove the GPF which is currently illegal in the UK, that's why I'm struggling to understand how this exhaust system can be so loud/legal with the gpf fitted?

@@georgesmiff4585 It’s not legal, you’re right. However it’s one of those “grey” areas between a policeman and an MOT station. You can pass an MOT and have a car insured that has a modified exhaust. However, if a policeman finds out that an emissions hardware (GPF/CAT/ has been completely removed - that’s when it becomes illegal. It’s such a massive grey area and causes so much dispute and confusion. But yeah, legal in the terms of its MOT’d and Insured, illegal if the police know for a fact and can prove a piece of emission hardware has been removed.

A decat sounds decent - however I’ve got older and just prefer a peaceful drive without a drone or the smell of fuel. I know how it might come across but I genuinely have just grown out of certain types of cars. I can still appreciate them all however to change the relationship vs the public, the car community and the police we have to work together to show the benefits of doing it the right way. Not many people are going this route so I’m working hard to keep the car community alive so that the government don’t rule it out! It’s up to us to work together dude. Decats add bhp, make more power sometimes however no point if it’s voids you of MOT and insurance and results in you paying out loads of money if you get into an accident or worse still hurt someone. If they want to come for you to get money after an accident. They will. For that reason I’d rather be safe, drive legally and still make good power doing it properly.

This only occurs on the MED9 ECU used in 5 cylinder Fords & the old Mk5 Golf TFSi where the settings default to stock values when power is lost to the ECU as the MED9 has no memory capability, the Revo file is fully timing boost and fuel adjustable as set up for the individual vehicle and driver preference, therefore if you have the SPS switch it stores the chosen values for timing boost and fuel allowing you to reset the file on your driveway, it also allows you to store three presets so you can for example have settings stored for lower octane or more aggressive settings for say a weekend or track mode, the SPS also opens up features including anti thrift and valet mode on MED9 cars.

There is a lot of adjustability in some of the Revo files so yes if that is the driver/owners preference they can be more aggressive as it may have been in the one you 'went in', however on the whole Revo tuning is very linear as it is track/road developed and all about driveability, not just outright performance.
