Join me on a particularly pipe rich day on the River thames foreshore. Today I find more pipes in one day then I ever have! Learn how I identify my pipes and find out more about why there seem to be so many pipes and pipe stems found in the Thames mud. I also find some other interesting pieces of history which I could do with some help identifying!
Here is a great link to help you to date any pipes you find
www.pipearchive...
you do need a permit to mudlark on the River Thames and you can find out the relevant information on the website of the Port of London Authority.

I have seen the 'Three anchors' design before. It appeared to have some connection to the Board of Admiralty. I like the way your investigations in to the people connected with your finds brings them to life. These quite ordinary people never get into the history books. But their stories are no less interesting than the rich and famous. I look forward to the next episode.

Good day Nicola, I sure have enjoyed all your videos. When I found your channel I was like, Mudlarking? I imagined a few things but was so tickled to learn what it was and now I’m hooked lol! I sit for hours watching you and learning about all the finds and you make it very interesting. I wish I could come out and mudlark with you,and help find pipes and coins and such. That will just be a dream, that doesn’t come true I’m afraid. I live in North Carolina in a nursing home and it seems that I’m stuck here. I do pass a lot of my time on KZbin trying to keep from losing my mind in here lol. Like you,I have a soft spot for the pipes,I have a few Native American peace pipes. So it would be cool to have one of the pipes from there cause they are very old just as the peace pipes are. Your a very interesting lady and I could listen to you for hours and your knowledgeable about lots of things too. I look forward to your next video.Before I forget,I was so thrilled to see nuggetnogging mudlarking with you and Si and Chillbill! He has been my favorite metal detector sense I first saw it on KZbin! He is a sweet God fearing man and he’s pretty funny too. Stay safe

What a marvelous batch of finds! That glass dome is particularly intriguing-- I wondered if it might be a magnifier? Maybe at one point it screwed into a wooden base to allow it to slide along a page or a table (it could've been used for everything from reading to jewelrywork to watch repair, I'd guess.) Just a thought-- it magnified so beautifully.

I think the lens might be a bullseye or concentrator off an old candle or oil lantern. It focussed the meagre light into a beam. Also in one of other vids you found a small dumpy bottle which is probably the base of a small oil lamp, which were still made fairly recently as decorative objects. I think the dumped keys could well have been stolen and used for burglaries.

@Aegopodium 5 жыл бұрын
I quickly went to the PLA website and these are the available permits: The PLA issues two types of foreshore permits. Standard - allows digging to a depth of 7.5 cm (for all new applicants) Mudlark - allows digging to a depth of 1.2m
@nicolawhitemudlark

yes, as per below, standard permit allows 7.5cm. mudlarks from the society of mudlarks can dig 1.2m. There are only 52 of these mudlarks. There is a waiting list to join them. Most people have the standard permit.

Liked your video before I even watched it. Congratulations in literally digging up that pipe! Like they expect a person faced with a great find to say, nope, too far down and have to stop. Natural curiosity takes over. Besides, in a few hours no one will ever know you were there unlike digging on solid ground. Again, well done with all your finds and when you find a pipe, I too wonder how old and how long is the stem. I also wonder who last used it and when. Hugs from Canada and thank you for a great video.

Just had to say thank you for giving me the biggest and funniest up yours moment the other day, I have learnt so much watching you with the pipes. I have a friend who’s husband likes to prove you wrong about just about anything. While he was out fishing with his son they found some clay pipe bits and bobs on the river bank where they were ,when he was telling us about one of them and describing it while his son retrieved it. I recognised the description and said I know what that is, as expected he roared with laughter told I was being stupid as usual and bet me twenty pounds that I didn’t. So I took the bet and let him have it ,it’s a royal antediluvian order of buffalo pipe, the order was set up around 1822 at the harp tavern great Russel street London and it’s likely that pipe was made in the area said I, oh faff off he said how would you know that. Behind him everyone was fighting back tears of laughter google it I told him.I don’t think I have enjoyed a stunned moment more needles to say I came away from his home twenty pounds better off lol, I’m glad because I was able to help a couple of guys In need get some food on the way home. So thank you for the education lol 😂

Hello from Morocco; I found interesting and funy your mudlarking activity !! There is a lot of history to learn from it. I would love to do the same. But in my case, since many rivers and ponds of south Morocco are dried up, instead of "mudlarking" I would say "river bed scratching" ( like gallinaceous birds 🤣🤣), or "reg-scrabbling" through desert plateau, or maybe "erg-raking" on sand dunes ( do you have an idea how to make it easy ??😜). Thankyou for sharing and have fun. 🤗🤗

The Royal Military Hospital's emblem are oak leaves (Oak Arbor Day) paying homage to (founder) King Charles II's hiding inside an oak from Cromwell's people. "A.H." - dunno, still, it's a lead.

Are you sure the calligraphy on your pottery shard is "AH" and not "NH." What little calligraphy I've studied says that only embellishments are as thin as the horizontal line connected the vertical lines of the "A." I believe you have "NH" for this reason and the "N" has the fine horizontal and vertical lines in the middle as embellishment. Please anyone who does calligraphy ,especially historical, calligraphy, let me know if my memory is accurate.

A Great Video Nicola! What a fine lot of pipes! The best part or one of the best things is in the research and finding out the history. The Thames is like a living history museum. One day I must get there and find a pipe. And your music is great as always, good taste I say. The lighter is one of the earliest, early 1900s I'd say. The lens is from a torch or lantern, perhaps an early car lamp? But old flash lights, torches would have a lens to magnify the the tiny bulb. And great pottery finds as well. I'm going to buy one of your fishes in the n ear future, they're great works. But what's my favorite? I love them all. Oh these dilemmas in life! What shall one do? Thank You Kindly and for the close up of the swan feather as well? Love, Light, Peace and Treasures in the Mud! DaveyJO in Pa. Now off to watch Si Finds!

Just been watching "WW2 Wendal" and they mentioned you on one of their videos, saying that you had one of the best sites to go to, since I have already Subscribed, I have to say that they are not wrong. Yours in one of the best "Mudlarking" sites that I have been watching, love the videos, keep up the good work Nicola. I used to live by the Thames as a child in Deptford a fair few years ago, and with my elder brother we did some mudlarking before we even heard about mud larking, in total we got a least 30 clay pipes before I got interested in other things. Love the work and the art that you do, keep it up dear lady. x

All I could find on non-consecration burial (I think you would need to know more about Catherine to determine why exactly she was buried where she was): Consecration is the formal dedication and setting apart, by a Bishop, of a church, churchyard, or burial-ground. There are legal consequences attaching to consecration, for instance a body cannot be removed from consecrated ground for burial elsewhere without a faculty. Every parishioner had the right of burial within his parish, although non-conformists were usually buried in non-consecrated ground, as before 1880 no body could be buried in consecrated ground except with the service of the Church, which the incumbent of the parish or a person authorized by him was bound to perform. In 1888 Lloyd George won on appeal, to the Divisional Court of Queens Bench, the Llanfrothen Burial case which established the right of Nonconformists to be buried according to their own denominational rites in parish burial grounds, a right given by the Burial Act 1880 that had hitherto been ignored by the Anglican clergy. The prime motive of the Burial Laws Amendment Act 1880, was to remove a grievance felt by non-conformists, especially in rural districts. The Act granted facilities to non-conformist ministers to carry out burials in the C of E churchyard, not using the rites of the Church of England, but those of the particular denomination involved. An 1823 statute legalized the burial of suicides in unconsecrated ground, but religious services were not permitted until 1882. In the year 1823 it was enacted that the body of a suicide should be buried privately between the hours of nine and twelve at night, with no religious ceremony. In 1882 this law was altered by the Internments (felo de se) Act, 1882. where every penalty was removed except that internment could not be solemnised by a burial service, and the body could now be committed to the earth at any time, and with such rites or prayers as those in charge of the funeral thought fit or may be able to procure.
