I think putting grease where it's dry might not be a great idea. Grease has a tendency to attract dirt, so any dirt that gets int here will end up like grinding paste, aluminium is soft and then it's a load of grooving into the sides.
@TraceVelo Жыл бұрын
Yeah this is fair. I will say though, I put a touch of grease behind the caps as soon as I got them out of the box, and 1000 miles later they are still very clean. The end caps seal _relatively_ well anyway, so keep virtually all the dust and grit out. The grease is mainly just there to keep any water from seeping in behind the caps and sitting right next to the bearing seals for extended periods.
@PeakTorque Жыл бұрын
I hear ya. But there's no Alu to wear there on the front end caps. The end caps and axle are co rotating. These hubs have ZERO labyrinth seal, oring, or lip seal. So on balance a bit of grease is better than water going straight into the bearing.
@gavroagogo Жыл бұрын
Hambini clearly never has to try and remove end caps that haven't had any grease. He doesn't work in a bike shop, dealing with customer bikes that have been put away in a cold damp shed after a four hour ride, every 3 days for 5 months of salted british roads. I haven't watched all his videos, but I haven't seen one where he needs to try and get a hub apart after that sort of abuse

you should if you care about rotational weight. tubeless tires weigh more than regular. then you need to put another 200 grams of sealant so when all is said and done your tubeless setup is considerably heavier. tpu provides similar rolling resistance reduction as well

It would be very useful if you could say what your height, weight, chest and waist measurements are and say what the size is of the Siroko kit you are wearing. I would like to try some Siroko kit but I don't fancy having to pay the postage to send it back if it says large in the size guide but fits like a small. If you're shy about revealing your body sizing then a simple "the size guide is accurate" or " get a size one / two sizes bigger than what the size guide suggests for a tight / casual fit". pre-stressing is esp. important for j-hook spokes as the ends may be slightly bent but not deformed to the hole, so they may be under additional strain leading to a fatigue failure. As you say, more just about seating for straight pull and carbon fiber spokes.

Yeah absolutely. I have had some wheels in the past where it was clearly not properly de-stressed at the factory, and after 200 miles or so, some of the spokes were at WILDLY different tensions. Spokes tend to be well balanced out of the box, but for them to be this consistent after nearly 1000 miles... Yeah very impressive IMO

Yeah this is a great question! I personally dont believe they will have spent any extra time to make them better, but ulimately I can't be sure. I'm a massive skeptic too, so understand you might not trust things at face value, which tbh is a good thing with a lot of stuff you see online. What I will say however is that 1000 miles doesn't lie. After sticking a bit of grease behind the caps, I never touched the wheels, and ran them in all weathers. It's fathomable they could have sent me a wheelset they spent extra time prepping, but for them to be that well balanced after 1000 miles riding on curmmy english B-roads, I think it shows the overall quality.
@mwp6662 Жыл бұрын
I think that buying them as a normal consumer would have done would be a fab idea! Perhaps a company could still get you to do a review for them, and just pay you what it costs? Then you bring extra confidence to people that what you receive has a higher chance of being what they will receive.

🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖 Hi Luke.. Just love how you present and test equipment. I could not help notice how much the bike started to wobbel during "sound test". It seems like wheels are not counter weighted for the valves. This is normally not an issue when riding flat road, but on long decentents (Mountain and Big hills) this can make the bike feeling unstable or worse microvibrate the bike into resonance. Can you confirm factory is counterweighting the wheels?
@TraceVelo Жыл бұрын
Hey Mikkel, yeah good observation! So this is probably a result of the tubeless sealant. The bike was sat like that in the stand for a couple of hours before the sound test, so the sealant would have pooled at the bottom of the tyre. Spinning it up abrubtly doesnt really give the sealant enough time to evenly coat the inside of the tyre, hence the wobbling. Wether they counterweight the wheels, I have no idea. However I would probably suspect not.

What are these like for tubeless tyre compatibility? I've been frustrated with limited choice and difficulty of seating tubeless tyres to OEM Giant SLR hookless rims. They've proved almost impossible to get tyres seated properly (running round) if you need to do do a roadside repair, such as fitting a tube. Hence I'm tempted to find some hooked, tubeless compatible rims if this opens up greater tyre choice, easier set-up, and less troublesome road-side repairs.

We offer replacement in case of defects in materials or workmanship.* The hubs are defective, and you paid good money for those wheels. They should provide replacements at no cost to you. That bike looks awesome, I wanna get new wheels, only got Mavik Aksium ones on, but the whole tubelesss / tubular thing is confusing. Thing is, it doesn't matter too much from a safety perspective if the chain came off on the largest gear on the back, you'd only be using that gear on a steep hill so wouldn't be going fast anyway.

"it doesn't matter too much from a safety perspective if the chain came off on the largest gear on the back" - maybe not from safety, but could get very expensive if it wedges between cassette and spokes and takes out a bunch of spokes. Could lead to a walk home and much expense.

The grease is where is belongs: behind the sealing rings of the bearing packages.

How much would you need to pay importing them, they ship straight from china right? On their website it says $599, let's say €600, how much would I need to add for shipping/import costs? If they reach €850, €900, €1000, wouldn't I be better off buying scribe wheels for €999?

Has anybody had issues with the carbon fibre spoke to aluminium nipple. Per electrolysis charts these two materials don’t work well together . (With moisture al nipples turn to powder on carbon ) What compound if any has been used in these wheel builds?

Oddly specific question - Does anyone know how the 9Velo rear hub dimesons line up vs. a DT ratchet hub? Basically have DT 350 rear hub, would like to run two wheelsets but hoping the hubs are close enough in dimensions so that I don't have to make any shifting adjustments (rotors are easy as they can be shimmed).

Really like the look of these wheels tbf kinda fancy them 😬😬

On Cade Media channel a carbon expert said that carbon fiber does not stretch. That could have something to do with all the spokes having uniform tension.

Neither do steel spokes pulled merely with spoke nipples.

They are not cheap. At this price I recommend French makadamm wheels. Alloy come in at 1.3kg at 690€, and carbone ones at 790€.

11:33 that notched cone design to undo the freehub is a stupid design. On my ELITE wheels it’s recessed and there’s no tool for it. Apart from paying extra from the manufacturer after finding out I can’t service or grease my freehub because they designed a tool only they have. Amazing I managed to crack one of those notches as I used nose pliers which fitted snugly but sheared off one edge so I have half the height on one of the edges

Destressing is a thing with steel spokes. Not sure if it does anything with this design....
@TraceVelo Жыл бұрын
So it's exactly the same here. De-stressing is mostly about seating the nipples and heads of the spokes properly into they're places in the rim and the hubs. These spokes have aluminium heads and nipples, so same deal here as far as i am aware.

I got me a set of Orome Valar TH50D recently and they have been amazing so far. The only thing im not the biggest fan of are the decals. But the reason i did choose them was the combination of the dt-swiss style hub, lightweight steel spokes and the internal width of 22mm (actually 23mm on my set) and external of almost 30mm. This combination makes running 32mm tires amazing (on tpu tubes, not tubeless since i had a brand new pair of normal gp 5000 laying around). Probably the best Upgrade possible for the conditions im usally riding in (very rough roads from time to time). Previous to them i had major vibrations with the 23mm tires, the 32mm on those rims just floats over everything. Best upgrade so far.
