I put exactly the same gearing as that Van Rysel on my road bike recently, Rival shifters/derailleur, apex 11-44 cassette and a Frankenstein 46t front chainring setup. Absolutely perfect - about the same as an 11-32 range, only give up a 50-11 equivalent! Cool to see it making its way onto “mainstream”. Cracking deal it looks like

The VanRysel looks decent, but a 1x with what looks like a 10-44t cassette is not a road groupset. I have that setup on my Revolt and it is awful for road. So, immediately you'd need to change the groupset. A 105 2x group would've been a far better choice.
@minimodelling7 ай бұрын
11-44 Apex cassette I think, which helps a bit - 400% range so same as a 2x 11-30. 12s instead of 13-14 non overlapping gears, only misses a 14t cog. (same as 10-36 though!). I’ve been running the same ratios coming from 105 2x and it’s been dreamy. Spent a looooot of time on gear-calculator and it’s more similar than a lot of people assume. I prefer having the one slightly bigger jump around 40-45kph and missing the 50-11 equivalent, for me that’s better than being in between both front chainrings constantly. Definitely ageee on the 10-44, little too much range for 12s road. Understandable though if it wasn’t right for you 😁
@diehardbikes7 ай бұрын
I don't agree. As a rider who is very familiar with his cross bikes, one of which rides a 44t front chainring and a 10-36t cassette, I almost feel that a 44t cassette would be too big! I understand not all riders are me. And I understand that grinding isn't everyone's favorite thing. But that is actually plenty of gear range. And most people won't actually need more than that.
@minimodelling7 ай бұрын
@@diehardbikes That’s fair! I was very very close to going with a 42 front and 10-36 also, about the same easy gear as my old 34-30 on 2x. I figured I’ve never been going uphill and said to myself “I wish I had fewer easy gears” and the spacing is similar on both otherwise haha. That and in my specific case Certini had the apex cassette discounted to £70 or so and I didn’t need to buy a new £60 freehub 😁

In the UK this bike starts at £1500 with Shimano Tiagra, I believe it has a double chainring albeit the large ring being 48t if I remember correctly, the cassette is a 11-34 I think.

A 1x is actually easier for most new riders to understand. I used to work for Trek, and any time I would show riders the drop bar section of road bikes, (which was next to out gravel bikes, many of which had a 1x) many people would say "hey, I like that, that looks simpler and easier to understand." This was the intention when Sram introduced it. Looks like it's taken hold.

@CheeseyWotsit they may not be paying Rapha prices either. I own several bikes from 5k to 13k. 4 or 5 of them. And no, I absolutely skimp on clothing anywhere I can. But my shoes? Bont cycling, 400 for those. My helmet? Trek Velocis, very light, very comfortable to the point I forget it's even on, and very airy, nice for the hot weather in the summer. In the rain I use a POC Tempus. I wear Oakleys, not for the brand, but because it's a night and day difference over brands like Scattante. The lense is incredible. I've tried many brands, Koo, POC, 100%, Scattante, but it's the quality of the lenses from Oakley that keep me coming back. I also went big on my saddle, as that's a contact point with my bike that matters when you spend a certain amount of time in the saddle. I spend 400+ miles per week in the saddle. If you only do 2 or 3 rides per week in the summer, spend no more than 100 on a saddle. But if you put in over 10 hours per week on the bike, spend more. Get a Specialized Power or a Bontrager Aeolus Elite or even Pro, or the RSL like I have. Or the Fizik Argo R1 like I have on another bike. Understand that people have different needs than you. But if you are the guy who rides Superteam wheels, I wouldn't listen to a single thing you say, cause sooner rather than later, those wheels will have you dead on the ground.
