I think that most of the points made here are clinging on to the original story and the characterization of Scott and knives being important. The whole reason these characters are given less is because the show does not need more from them, it’s a story about Ramona and if most of the first episode was spent on the subtlety of Scott’s character to then kill him, those minutes would realistically be wasted. Instead we receive condensed scenes that get the narrative across with a perspective more akin to what Ramona is seeing.

@@WeebJail fair point, I think that the creator is trying to appeal to the same audience and set a story in the same world to make it easier to appeal to a more broad audience. I’m the original and in this Scott is heavily flawed but in this version they take a more direct approach. While I agree that these make for a weaker character and love story, it’s not really about that love story so in my opinion it does not make the work worse as a whole.

Even with the new direction its pretty meh.... O'Malley is good writer when it comes to writing fun fever dream nonsensical but funny stuff... but when it comes to him writing something more deep he FAILS compared to other writers of animated series/movies or comics. Why would I watch Scott Pilgrim takes off to to have a fun time with animated series that deals with breakups, introspection, comedy etc... when there are 10000 of other animated shows that do it better?

I'm a big Scott Pilgrim fan, and I was very excited when I saw this announced, as well as the names associated with it. Wright, O'Malley, the entire cast, etc. And of course the bait got me salivating. I thought this could be an occasion to dive more into the details that the movie didn't have time to get into: Envy's character development, the twins' real story, Kim's arc, hell, maybe even Lisa Miller. The switch didn't bother me either, when the dust settled and I understood that they were going somewhere else. Another story told in the same universe, by the same characters, from the same writer? Yeah, why not? But then the cracks started appearing. First, the voice acting is anemic. Having the whole cast back is awesome on paper, but these people are not voice actors. The delivery is lifeless and flat, apart from characters who have a very cartoony voice, like Lucas Lee and Envy. Scott, Ramona, Wallace, Neil and most of the others are just dying on screen. Then, while the movie is quick-paced and expertly edited, this one drags itself most of the time. The dialogue isn't as quick-witted and punchy. This is a production that NEEDS to be about the dialogue and the delivery. The part with the Scott Pilgrim movie and play, and everyone playing someone else and being each other's stunt doubles was exhausting. It was really confusing and didn't feel like it lead anywhere. And man, my boy Wallace, arguably the best part of the books and movie. He used to be cool, grounded and cocky, now he's straight-up narcissistic, talks about him in the third person, and is generally insufferable. Todd catching the gay for him is obnoxious and basically degrades further a character that was already fairly unlikeable. There are some good bits. I like the future with old Scott and the twins, even though the vegan robot thing is stupid. Visually the show's great. I just found myself kinda bored by the show. It's never exciting. The pace and the bite isn't there. They could have done worse, sure, but perhaps they should have spent more time in the writing and editing bay, and gotten everyone some voice acting workshops.

Honestly, I’m sure this show is good but I’m still annoyed by how Netflix deliberately tricked me into thinking this was going to be a faithful adaptation. If it was called something different like “Ramona takes off” or just “Ramona” I would be fine. I think from now on either I’ll take trailers with extreme skepticism or not watch them at all

Learn not to trust critics because they all have an angle they're coming from, and it's not subjective. Instead, see what the average movie-goer thinks. For instance, critics (on Rotten Tomato) rate this show a 98%, while those of the general audience who've rated it there have rated it a 78%, which I agree with. Is it critically acclaimed? Yes. Is what critics say consistent with the overall rating people like you and me gave it? Eh, it's close-ish, but ultimately not.

I’ll admit there are times where I kinda disagree with the review and times where I kinda do. I’ll be honest, you did encapsulate most of my emotions when I was watching the show for the first time as someone who’s read the comics twice and watched the movie to the point that I can recite it off the dome. I can’t really state my emotions into words well for some reason and it has always been like that so having a debate over SPTO will probably not be a thing until I can collect my thoughts. But I’d love to talk anything ol Scotty P. Edit: also idk how Mae did it but she made Roxie sometimes sound like Ash Ketchum

I feel like the voice direction for the show could have been better. Sometimes the voices are way too quiet or soft for me to hear anything. Also the voice acting tends to sync out and not harmonize very well with the animation. Characters like Ramona and Scott sometimes sound way too deadpan for what is actually happening on screen. Which is weird to me, since a lot of the actors involved had prior experience voice acting for other animated shows. Michael Cera specifically was really good as Todd in the Wayside School movie they did for Nickelodeon.

Some context: My foray into Scott Pilgrim has exclusively been watching the movie. Several times. The first episode seemed fine to me until the end but you bring up some interesting points. Do I agree with you? I dunno. Am I biased simply because I could fill in the blanks with my pre-knowledge of the movie? I'll have to watch the movie again. I won't be watching Takes Off again, though, and so despite having watched it all, that says something. Edit: Yeah man just skimmed the first part of the movie. That whole focus on Knives, and on Scott's past and issues was basically de-focused. At first, it seemed like they were going to do the whole thing again, but replacing Scott with Ramona as the main character. I was disappointed in that concept. The meta film sh-t became weird and took up several episodes but provided enough interest to keep going. And in the end, I was disappoint that it was SPOILER a time-travel re-write /SPOILER. It was most disappointing to me overall having Scott removed from the majority of the show. One thing I personally discovered was that what I really enjoyed about Scott Pilgrim is Scott's interactions with the other characters. So having him gone felt like some OVA where the main character's off doing something important while the other characters go to a beach or something. Fun if you like the other characters... for maybe ONE episode. But not what I'm looking for for a whole Scott Pilgrim season.

everyone has their own opinion but im just gonna throw mine out there and say that as a long time scott pilgrim fan I absolutely enjoyed the show along with its changes to the story, I also liked how they gave the side characters a lot more screen time and story, and finally I love how the exes were more likable and how they turned good in the end, just an amazing story throughout! I still believe that people are entitled to their own opinions :)

Honestly this would have been so much better if they just animated the comics with this exact animation style. The show looks great, the animation is awesome; but the main problem is it’s too short and a little lack luster in the reimagining. I still enjoyed it SPTO for what it was, but man they should have just made a full length animation of the original comics with like 3 seasons. In short, the show is aite. The animation and style is fucking awesome. Just could have been so much better

The problem with the series is that no matter how good or bad it is, it will be judged by how it tricked people into watching it. They marketed it in such a way where they knew people would reasonably think it would be an adaptation of the book, but vague enough where they could say 'oh we never said it was going to be that,' for a weak defense from the backlash. Its like opening a restaurant called the Taste of Italy and telling people to come and try the authentic food. People get excited and come to the restaurant expecting Italian only to find it really serves sushi. They get angry and complain to the manager saying why did you lie to us. The manager says I didn't lie to you. I never said we served italian food. Only that its authentic food. And this is authentic sushi. Now did the manager lie directly no. But he did misdirect customers into coming in by presenting the restaurant in a way knowing full well that people would reasonably think it was Italian so they would come in because more people like Italian than sushi. It doesn't matter how good the sushi is. You tricked me and I now hate the sushi.

If the story was half as good as the animation I'd love it, like I didn't mind the fact that Ramona is the main character this time, but only if they were able to still develop the relationship between Scott and Ramona, along with the character development Scott gets, what with him being forced to confront Envy, him breaking up with Knives, important stuff like that! And guess what, he's COMPLETELY ripped out of the story until the second to last episode. They didn't even fuckin try. And, not gonna lie, they RUINED Todd. And what they did to my man Gideon Graves...no. Inexcusable, like I can KINDA get behind Matthew usurping him, (even though they nerfed Gideon to HELL) as long as Gideon was still doing evil shit of his own and fighting back, and they just..didn't until it was far too late. God, how do you treat the main protagonist AND antagonist with such disrespect?

I feel like the bad parts of Scott pilgrim didn't affect me too much as for it to be only 8 episodes is a good thing as the story is fast pace and doesn't stop for any filler it goes on and on and feels more like a movie than a series just when I thought I'm missing Scott he appears in the 6th so yeah the show gives you something different to something you are very familiar and opens way more possibilities and I trust the creator for not fumbling the story but I bet some of the actors will dip out.

I agree on the bits explaining how this show "sucks at being Scott Pilgrim", but that's kind of the entire point. It's meant to be watched as a sequel to the original. That's why it doesn't ramble with info that we don't need for the story at hand. They're things we're expected to know. As an evidence, you can see that the original is still canon, because Future Scott lived through it and in consequence prevented it from happening. And not to offend you, but saying that Ramona's entire arc in the comics was "to show that she's someone worth fighting for" is SO far away from the point of the character, I'm just baffled at the idea of you being a fan of the original. It's just... such an incel take, dude. I wish there was a more honest, constructed review that told us exactly what you didn't like besides the bait n switch... but your curse-fueled "anal penetration vomit" analogies aren't doing it for me.

There are THREE types of sequels. Those that try something new and interesting, while staying true to the characters and preserving the soul of the original. Those that regurgitate for us more of the same, risking to lose the original's soul in the slop. And those that shit on the original and serve it to you on a shitstained silver platter as if that's a normal thing to do in a respectable restaurant. Killing the main character on the first episode is a sure sign of the latter. The shittening. He-Man did the same a couple years ago, fans didn't like it then, fans won't like it now.

but scott wasnt "dead" per say. he just took off as the title implied. i think it took an interesting turn on Ramona having to deal with her baggage from the exes instead of having scott be the one to defeat them instead. the show served as like a NG+ experience to try something different. although i will agree that the marketing was just bad as it did make it look like a one for one adaptation. but if they were just gonna adapt the books, they would have just called the series "scott pilgrim vs the world" and not takes off no?

Did u want a 1 to 1 adaptation then watch Micheal cera in the live action film 🎥 to see the same stuff.
