Does anyone else get chills when he says “now Willy Wonka, major Tom, Ali and leia have moved on” or is it just me? I think that line is just beautiful.
@krisg98485 жыл бұрын
I think the song is a masterpiece myself. My opinion
@philyates76705 жыл бұрын
It's not supposed to be beautiful, it's referring to the fact that in modern times our focus is always on the wrong thing. Whilst Trump and Jong Il nearly brought the world to nuclear war, society was more bothered about which celebrity had just died, hence Willy Wonka, Major Tom, Ali and Leia. Referencing The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy (hence the title), when the world ends only the dolphins will have paid attention and will have fucked off before it occurs whilst we remain to face our inevitable doom, because we were too distracted by unimportant shit to see it coming. It's a fucking genius song with amazingly intelligent lyrics. It's somewhat ironic that you find the line beautiful. Maynard is a fantastic lyricist. This, Delicious, Judith, The Pot, Right In Two and Aenima are absolutely amazing from this stand point.

I appreciate that the songs are motivating in the sense of...1) get off your ass, don't be overwhelmed by all of it, 2) take action, 3) change is not necessarily a bad thing, 4) unite and work together, 5) be on the right side of history.

I doubt you still care, but the title is from the book A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, in which the dolphins desert earth moments before the world ends and their final signal to us is “so long, and thanks for all the fish.” They had known about the destruction of earth long before we did and had been trying to signal us for years now but we only misinterpreted them as complex flips and tricks for entertainment. It’s a very cool connection you made to the team though, pretty clever if you!

From the film adaptation: "It's an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, Man had always assumed that he was the most intelligent species occupying the planet, instead of the *third* most intelligent. The second most intelligent creatures were of course dolphins who, curiously enough, had long known of the impending destruction of the planet earth. They had made many attempts to alert mankind to the danger, but most of their communications were misinterpreted as amusing attempts to punch footballs or whistle for titbits. So they eventually decided they would leave earth by their own means. The last ever dolphin message was misinterpreted as a surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double backward somersault through a hoop while whistling the star-spangled banner, but in fact the message was this: So long and thanks for all the fish." Ever since Douglas Adams released Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy back in the 70s and 80s, the disappearance of dolphins has been used as a somewhat obscure pop-culture reference to signify some sort of imminent finality, usually the end of the world. Likewise, the phrase "So long and thanks for all the fish," is used as an obscure sort of final farewell between friends in the wake of unfortunate partings.
