I wish people like this would get more credit for their wonderful talents - we live in an era of cheap talent-less reality tv and absurd modern art where idiots get paid a fortune for nothing, when it's people like this who should get credit - amazing, thank you x

Just because you don't understand modern art doesn't mean it isn't art. It's the creative thought process that we don't want to stifle. What makes repetitive motions on a machine to make a letter C more valuable than modern art? Or do you just want people in the industrial world to keep their hands busy so they can't think for themselves? While I appreciate the lessons on free motion quilting, I can't agree with your bashing the art world. And get rid of that idiotic profile pic.

@@ranchochihuahua Your comment is both rude and uninformed. Modern art is part of the brutalism movement designed to depress and demoralize members of western nations -- all part of the communist (rooted in luciferianism) agenda. From 45 Goals of Communism for Takeover of United States (read into Congressional record in 1963): "22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to 'eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.' 23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. 'Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.' ..."

You make free motion quilting look achievable for even a beginner. The various pink fabrics on the front of the quilt are certainly pretty (and believe me, I love "all things pink"). But at 7:05 when you show the finished back of the quilt with the contrasting dark fuchsia thread - well, I think it's the prettiest part of the quilt! It has just the right touch of movement for interest, yet were I sitting in a comfortable chair I could see following the design with my eyes that would distract me me from the cares of the day, with a calming effect - perfect for a nap! In fact I could see making an entire bed quilt with just one fabric on the front and one different fabric on the back using this Double "C" design for quilting. I've got a number of 100% cotton new designer flat sheets (some in 200 thread count, and some in 300 thread ct or higher) in solids of tone on tone that I bought on sale years ago, thinking I would use them for quilt backings before I learned that many quilt instructors discourage using different thread counts for the front and back. But I may give this a try using two sheets with the same brand and thread count for both front and back and use my Schmetz 80/12 Microtex needles for the quilting. Perhaps I'll try it out on a baby quilt or a sofa throw first. Do you have any advice as to whether or not you think I'm using the right needle, etc? Or would you advise me to just donate the sheets and only make quilts that use traditional quilt fabric? Thanks, Laura.
@SewVeryEasy
@SewVeryEasy 9 жыл бұрын
+newbeequilter Yes a lot of people do not like to use sheets for the back. It is hard to quilt through. However I would use them to learn on. Your needle should be fine or you might need to go up a size 90/14. Start with small pieces. Have fun quilting on those sheets, you can now take the pressure off yourself and just go for it. If they don't turn out "Oh well" no loss but in the meant time will get experience. But please wash the sheets a few times before you quilt them. The one thing is that if the sheets are stiff ...use them just as sheets or the "learning to quilt thing" will not be fun. My first quilt I too used a sheet....and only once,! When you get to quilt a quilt with good cotton ...you will feel and see the difference. So use them to practice on and quilt your quilts with quilting cotton. thanks for asking :)

+SewVeryEasy Thank you SO much for taking the time to answer my questions about quilting with sheets. I may make a a basic duvet and pillowcases out of several; the rest I'll donate. You've convinced me that trying to quilt on sheeting fabric will not be enjoyable. I have plenty of quilt shop quality fabric in my stash - so even my practicing free motion quilting can be fun. Thanks for the good advice and saving me some frustration.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! For sharing this tutorial, and for showing where you "crossed the line" and said, "I'm leaving it.". In the past I've been so hyper-critical of my quilting that my hubby has half jokingly told me he thinks I enjoy taking my work out more than I do making the quilt. The past few months I've been going through the numerous quilt tops I've had waiting to be quilted. I've been "making" myself do free motion quilting and NOT going back to take out stitches that are perfectly fine. So far I've finished 5 quilts, and it's been very nice to have them finished and being enjoyed instead of unfinished, folded, and stored away.

I took on the mammoth task of starting to make 8 snuggle blankets for my grandkids in time for Christmas. As this is the first Christmas of using my new sewing machine I have not done any stippling etc at all as I don't want to mess them up. Well, six down and only two to go, and after a few hitches, they do look good, not perfect but they're home sewn and unique to each child. I've also put a label on each one saying "Made with love by Grandma." Thank you so much for your videos, they're very helpful.

Wow, I've never heard of the "putting a tune in your head" method to help maintain a consistent sewing speed!. What a great idea ☺. Guess what I'll be doing from now on while quilting.

Oh, thank you for this tutorial! I have been practicing very small circles and meandering, but it would take forever and about 10 spools of thread to do a lap quilt! This is a great idea for practicing on a lap quilt size! Let me finish my current project with the small circles and then I will try this idea next!

I think you are Great!! You make me feel like I can do anything and I’ve just started learning.😊 You’re a great teacher and build confidence in your “students”. This makes the 4th or 5th tutorial of yours Ive watched this evening. You make things clear and concise. I’m a visual learning however I need to also know why I’m doing what I’m doing or it doesn’t contact with me. Like I said, you’re a great teacher. God Bless

I had a *Lightbulb* moment, when you said.. only quilt one quarter of your quilt at a time. I have quilted many quilts..and struggled with them, to push them through the throat of my little machine..Watching your video.. something clicked in my brain.. only work on one quarter of the quilt at a time! I love that idea! will make things so much easier, for FMQ, I think. Thanks so much!!

Laura this is wonderful! It looks so professional and yet perfectly possible for a relative beginner. I like how large the design can be so that, as you say, the quilt can be finished very quickly. I can't wait to give it a try.
