I think Emily Blunt's character was clearly meant to be a doctor or nurse. She was able to search through the medications at the pharmacy to find something for her son, she checked her own blood pressure, listened to the baby's heartbeat, etc. So I think that's meant to be an explanation for how easily she handled the birth and clean-up.
@Beatness121

My complaint with that is that she was checking her blood pressure completely wrong? I mean she wasn't wearing a stethoscope while doing it, which is needed to actually check blood pressure.

Grace! The girl wasn't left behind because she was a girl, She was left behind because she is deaf. She literally cannot sense her surroundings well enough because she can't hear. So she's a liability in this specific situation where it's life and death. It's not about gender.

The fact that the Dad Krasinski, is the only one on the planet Earth to figure out that the monsters are vulnerable to ultrasonic sound ruined the movie for me. Krasinski sacrificed himself, but this was forced/fixed as he is the producer and hubby of Emily Blunts. My mother deduced their weakness within 10 minutes. My cousin, who is a gamer, offered a different view. To search the planet for a Black Bolt or Black Canary type metahuman, to take care of these blind monsters

Grace, you totally missed the fact that the daughter was left behind because she was deaf and not because she was a girl. It has nothing to do with that whatsoever. As she was deaf, she lacks that spacial awareness which happens when people lack hearing and that's why when the camera was focused on the daughter, the sound was totally different (total silence) compared to when it was on every other character (ambient noise in the background). I'm not sure why you came to the conclusion you did, but hey. Also, the whole scene with the baby being born and the mother screaming was covered up by the firecrackers going off. Apart from that, great review ;)

About the daughter, she did blame herself and having her family pile blame on her for a year and a half after that would not have made for a healthy environment at all. She saw that the batteries were out and wanted to give her brother a bit of joy, whats the harm in that right? Unfortunately way more than she could have imagined As for throwing a tantrum in the middle of the apocalypse, my counterpoint is that since they'd survived for basically a year and a half without further casualties and it was implied that multiple other families had done the same in the surrounding area, life had reached a new normal state in which she could run off and there would be no consequences if she was careful. She definitely didnt help things, but i dont think shes to blame for absolutely everything. I loved the movie too

I don’t agree with you about the daughter. You have to realize yes they lived in an intense dangerous living situation, but that’s it a living situation, they have to live not just survive. You can’t push aside your emotions and relationship tensions. So yes the daughter wanted to storm off like a normal teenager. Why teach your kids math or English skills when it the end of the world. Why have board games and take the time to have alternate quiet pieces? Because this family wants to live a life, not just survive. Maybe it’s not the smartest outlook but it an way to remain sane because you have some common aspects of life before. And in a way if you can still have a life, love, children, and a family in this world then that in itself is a victory over the creatures

Dilip Tomar It probably wouldn't have affected it much at all. 10 Cloverfield Lane was great and not related to the original Cloverfield directly, they probably would've just put Clovefield as a name of a city in the newspaper or something. It wasn't man's work and woman's work. The girl was deaf and couldn't learn what the father had to teach his kids. That's why he tried to make a hearing aid that worked so that he could teach his daughter as well.
@lonewander6772
@lonewander6772 6 жыл бұрын
stelian cincu True. He was trying to teach his son the lesson that louder sounds drown out smaller sounds and they could use that as a survival tip. The mere fact that she is deaf meant he couldn't teach her because she wouldn't be able to "hear" the difference, thus why he was working so hard to make a hearing aid that will allow her to hear thus he can THEN teach her the survival tip. This was simply a problem of Grace looking for something "progressive" based to gripe about.

I don't think the father chose the son to do "the mans work". I think he took the child who needed the most teaching in regards to how to survive. The daughter wasn't afraid and didn't need to be pushed from her comfort zone. The son needed to see the world for what it is and grow from it. Toughen up.

About the birth Grace, she did made a sound and do you remember the fireworks that the son did by his dad asking him to do that and help his mother So she made a sound at the same moment the fireworks began so the monster got confused , and remember when the dad gave the example of the river sound like no other sound will beat a huge sound and that what really happened at that situation, the fireworks had bigger sound than her screaming so the monster ran directly to the fireworks sound and left the mother giving birth to the baby that made sound but they solved this problem by going directly to the sound free room and put the baby in the box.

The monsters made clicking noises in the film which, while I was watching, gave me the impression that they were using radar (like bats). However, they would only be able to do that while they were clicking and only be able to sense the person if they stood out. I think you’re right in that the monsters had some flaws. Like do they always stick around after a kill? If so, how did they get away after the sons death at the beginning? And how has no one else thought about using sound as a weapon?
@lonewander6772
@lonewander6772 6 жыл бұрын
Rylee Hall Kid was small. Judging by the lunging attack the monster did towards the kid and the way it splattered that rodent with a slap, I'd guess the kid simply was crushed to a pulp. As for the sound weapon, I think people were preoccupied with not making sound in order to survive and didn't think the one thing that could put them in danger is the one thing that could also be used against the monsters.

Lol yeah I get why families wouldn’t use sound as a weapon because silence is obviously safer. But militarily, your already making noise with guns and bombs, so it’s not like a weapon using sound would be any MORE dangerous. It was just a thought

THIS they could ecolocate but only when they need to then they rely on memory to move REMEMBER they are vulnerable when they open their "head" and they can hear Loud un-natural sounds very well without exposing their weakness and dont forget they are alien bio weapons they are not animals on instinct they were DEIGNED to kill, so im guessing they formed a gride like system where they were perfectly spaced out from each other for maximum coverage, also just like a zombie end of the world scenario, no one will predict that this very SMALL "sound" device would be effective, im sure they tried loud noises and low ones (like what the elephants use)

The point of the daughter being stupid contributes to the parenting theme. You do all you can, but eventually kids will make bad choices, especially in high stress situations. *Spoilers* In regards to the creatures roaming through the forest without slamming into trees and large rocks/boulders, I immediately thought of echolocation, but then realized that if it were echolocation they wouldn't need the Abbots to make noise in order to find them, they could simply chirp like a bat does. (They make noise in the film and rather loud noise at that) I went to my friend to get his take on it and see if he could figure out how they manage movement so precisely. He looked at me as if I were an imbecile incapable of forming a basic thought process and simply said, "They don't eat their food. What reason would they have to kill humans other than they make noise, so it's obvious they do echolocate, but won't attack anything without it producing a sound." I proceeded to immediately facepalm myself for completely overlooking something so obvious. This epiphany sparked a theory of mine, that is what if the creatures were sent to earth by an extraterrestrial species far more intelligent than they are, but are also much more hypersensitive to sound and are using the creatures to purge the earth of noise in some odd form of terraformation. Well, that's my two cents, thanks for reading!

I actually think the opposite. Remember the Dad wouldn't let the daughter go downstairs to the office. But the first time she does, (after he died) she realizes when she reads his notes, "What is the weakness?" Then it occurred to her why the creature ran away from her and her brother in the grain silo. If the father had shown her what he was working on, she might have figured it out earlier and been able to save his life.

Also the daughter wasn't any more responsible for the deaths than anyone else in the family. They all made dumb mistakes, and ultimately the parents are responsible for the actions of their children.

I love your reviews, but I’ve never disagreed more with you. You have to remember that these are children. Even though the daughter is the oldest, she’s still a child. She made a mistake by giving into her little brothers desire for the rocket, but I wouldn’t blame her. You’re placing so much responsibility on the poor daughter. I truly enjoyed her and felt so bad for her situation.

Grace I thought you said this film had a happy ending?!!! I came out so sad and depressed especially when John’s character gave his life. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the film and was on the edge of my seat. My sister and I felt exactly the same way about the daughter and the family overall, they made a lot of dumb decisions. Plus, my theater-going experience I had with the movie was AWESOME. Everyone in the theater was so reactionary and even one guy made everyone laugh out loud during the scene where Emily Blunt finally shot the monster. Great review!

There are commonsense problems with EVERY movie that should've would've could've ben done, that's obvious. This IS the best suspenseful movie I've seen to date. This family grew up in this lifestyle... The father took out the batteries. Wouldn't you give your baby brother the spaceship without the batteries? Yes, he LOVES spaceships.

I thought that the reason the creatures were able to navigate throughout the house without bumping into things was because those clicking noises they made were like a form of echolocation for them. I thought that was pretty cool character design.

Very good and fair review! 😊I agree with many of the points you talked about. I want to see the movie a second time around the 20th. The nail is a horrifying part I’m not looking forward to seeing again, it was definitely the most difficult scene to watch. I would love a sequel!!! The movie is doing great at the box office and review wise so I can definitely see this happening.

The only plothole I saw was "Why is she having a baby?". Like, in this world I would think it would go without saying that "we better be ok with the kids we have NOW cause we're not making anymore. Oral from here on out thankyouverymuch...". But even that can be explained away IMO because I do think they see a light at the end of this tunnel and that they do realize that they're isolated and that surely something else may be happening outside their area that they don't know of yet. All they have to do is survive long enough to get help.

I think the monsters did have some form of radar because they did make a sort of clicking noise. They also clearly had a sort of electrical field around them because the lights flickered or went out, the TVs went to static, and the daughter’s hearing aid emitted feedback when they were around. Maybe they could use that for navigation.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this yet Grace but I have a feeling the clicking noises that the monsters were making when they were on the hunt so to speak were some sort of echolocation type of mapping of the environment. And if that's the case then that would make sense why they were able to move as easily throughout certain environments as they were like you were discussing in the review.

Also you mentioned her not making a sound while giving birth but she did. She screamed as the baby came out, just as they lit the fireworks.. as the monster left to go outside that is when she left the tub which was full of blood as you could see when johns character finally came up the stairs

I didn’t cry when the dad died. I mean he was great and all but I didn’t find him particularly more likable than the rest. I was thinking about the monsters weakness and it makes perfect sense. That’s why they go towards sound because they probably are afraid of it in a way. And it totally makes sense that the daughter figured it out afterwards I mean tbh I thought she figured it out rather quickly and a little abruptly. Like I figured it out watching if I were her I would never have figured it out.

The monsters VERY CLEARLY used a type of echolocation. That is why they were able to navigate and negotiate tight rooms and close quarters. It's also why they had to open up their armored heads. It exposed their vulnerable fleshy bits, but it allowed them to send out their echolocation "ping" -- which is also when it caused feedback with Regan's hearing aide.

I adored this movie. As soon as the nail pulled up, you heard the entire audience (who had been dead silent the whole time) take in a collective breath of anticipation. This was INSANE tension, to the point that I could't actually focus on anything else until she headed towards the stairs. I really struggled with a lack of sympathy for Reagan. The brother was a much more interesting character to me, and I agree that at day 200-something, they should realise by now that throwing a temper tantrum simply isn't going to cut it.

Oh my GAWWD!!! I haven’t been this tensed and frightened during a movie since watching Freddy Krueger in the 80s as a kid. I told my dad I almost walked out of the theater twice! He asked if it was THAT bad. I replied NO it was THAT GOOD!! I agree with all your critiques. I had questions about the birth scene as well but I took it that she gave birth during the rocket explosion incident. Just like the waterfall, she was able to scream because there was a louder sound being made at the time. I think Emily Blunt was amazing!! She really sold the fear, pain, desperation, and resilience. Great movie overall! So glad I stuck it out and watched the whole thing.

My thoughts about the well-oriented-yet-blind-monsters.. I think that maybe they are sending out sound waves. In fact, the monsters are tuned into a specific sound wave that bounces back from their surroundings, helping them navigate. And another sound wave affects them so much because it interferers with their sound wave sight and it's like they are actually blind for the first time. Or something like that.

The use of sounds and silence reminded me of The Birds. When I talk about sounds, I don't necessarily mean the score, I mean the use of natural sounds. In this movie and in The Birds those sounds or lack of sound really helps to build tension and draws you in even more. You know something is about to happen, but you dont know when, there isn't that classic tension building score, we're all used to hearing. I just saw A Quiet Place, really well done! If you like Thrillers that aren't "typical" check out Hush. Its about a deaf woman, living in a secluded area until a serial killer comes upon her. Highly recommend Hush.
