Ok Verdict is In! I just got my copy of Blood, Sweat & Tears today. I opted for the Friday Music reissue. I would Never spend One Step money for a record unless it were the Beatles, The Doors, Led Zeppelin or Elvis. While this IS a very good album (Great instrumentation!) and it Does sound amazing, it does not even hold a candle to Abbey Road, imo. There are some long drawn out mundane sections, particularly the organ solo on Side 2, that should’ve been shortened. The energy of side 1 doesn’t continue throughout. However Abbey Road doesn’t have one mundane or drawn out section. Instead, ALL of the songs are fantastic, the energy builds throughout and crescendos to a great finish and the shorter segments leave you wanting more! Still! Happy to own it and thank you for inspiring me to buy it. I'm thoroughly enjoying it :)
@MelindaMurphy3 жыл бұрын
It's a very good album and I love that early 70's sound it has. I agree that it isn't Abbey Road. While it definitely deserved the album of the year nomination, Abbey Road deserved the win. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the album though. It has a few dull moments but for the most part, I really like it. Have a great weekend.

Mel, Nilsson's "shaggy dog" look fits his musical aesthetic perfectly; in fact, he went to great effort to cultivate it personally and professionally. He wanted to be John Lennon, but was self-aware enough to not take himself so seriously, despite his immense talents.

Omg, I want to get The POLICE box set so bad. I watched a video where this guy was showing the last album that the Police made, and it was on a colored vinyl and there was no lable stating that it was colored vinyl, and he said to check your copies of that record and hold it up to the light. It looks like it is just a standard black copy but some were printed colored. I have four copies of that album and I have to find them to check them out.😍

The original that came out on the early 80's was on a translucent vinyl. Synchronicity was an incredible sounding record when it came out. Audiophile quality. The box set version I have is on regular black vinyl. It sounds really good but I give the edge to the original in a sound test. It's not a huge difference though. Thank you and take care.

Melinda, Your interesting vids keep popping up on my Aussie KZbin. 12 months ago I completely revamped my music listening upgrading my phono/CD/tape.player with high end triple speakers and then starting over with my own 500 GOAT album search. A big cull at the start back to about 100 with just 25 to find now. A nice little COVID project. What I’ve learnt: 1 With the right equipment all formats sound great. 2 Albums from the 60s to about 1980 sound best on vinyl. 3 CD quality is outstanding through the 80s and 90s and fantastic value at $2 to $10 dollars. 4 Be ok with crackle on older records. An unavoidable part of the appeal. 4 Being open to all formats increases buyer opportunity. My latest purchase was INXS second album on tape as original vinyl is hard to find. No problem. 5 I pay $50 for new occasionally as a treat or for that hard to find. I just prefer originals in at least vg+ condition. 6 With higher album numbers the realty is we probably listen to an album twice in a year. Another budget topic. 7 Be brutally honest with artist skill. Abbey Rd is a secondhand CD only for me. Maxwells Hammer and others are skip tracks. This album makes my 500 for cultural significance. We probably both agree on #1 DSOTM made just a few years later. 8 Exploring other genres and eras is fun. Never thought I’d have Rage Against The Machine in my collection. Tom’s guitar....9 Post C2000 is the next challenge looking for skilled singer, songwriter and player using real drums. Hope this hasn’t been too boring or offensive. Cheers, Mike
@MelindaMurphy3 жыл бұрын
Your observations are really great. DSOTM does edge out Abbey Road for me too. You are on point about when to buy vinyl and when to go with a CD. I don't have a cassette player so I will leave that format to others. Lol. Having a big collection does mean we don't play our records to the point of wearing them out which is a good thing. Thank you for sharing these thoughts. Take care.

Hi Melinda. Some high quality records there. Glad you like the Enuff Znuff album, I think it is now one of my favorite albums, I can't stop playing it lol I remember having a couple Blood Sweat and Tears albums back in like 1980. It was sad about Rush passing, I only listened to him once in awhile but hard to believe he is gone. Tawney Kitaen passed away a few days ago. It's pretty sad. I'm not a big fan of the Police but I have thought about picking up Ghost In The Machine because I remember having it as a kid and listened to it a lot. I do like the atmosphere of that album and it does have a few good easy listening tunes on it. Melinda, Thanks for another fine show. I found some connections that I hope you find interesting. On Bob Dylan’s greatest hits two songs (Like a Rolling Stone & Positively 4th Street) are from the “Highway 61 Revisited “ sessions in 1965. Al Kooper , who later discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd, played keyboards on those ‘65 sessions and he came up with that famous organ sound on Like a Rolling Stone. Well in ‘67 he founded Blood, Sweat & Tears and played on their first album called “Child is Father to the Man”. This was more hard rocking from the B, S & T album that you showed in your video. Al Kooper sang and wrote most of the songs on the first B, S & T album. And that album I highly recommend...it is excellent !!! But one of the songs called “Without Her” was written by Harry Nilsson. It is similar to the song you liked called “Without You” from the Nilsson album you also showed in your video. Amazing !!! I just thought you had many “odd” connections in your video and I had a lot of fun putting them together for you. I was lucky to see Bob Dylan in 1981 and Al Kooper was with him....Like a Rolling Stone was incredible that night !!! And Dylan’s voice is great for his type of music.. it would be so nice if people would stop complaining about his voice and just listen to all the wonderful music that he created. Im out...catch you later...and thanks again !

You are right, Fly By Night by Rush is really awesome. The cover artwork with the owl looks just gorgeous. Owls are extraordinary and mysterious creatures. I read in a book they are sleeping on their stomage and upside down and that underlines their specialty. Many people are afraid of owls but for no reason. ----Neil Peart wrote all excellent lyrics and i think he was one of the best drummers ever. His feeling and his technique was unbelievable. He made Rush what they mean today. My favorite tune on it is the beautiful Rivendell. I figure that tune is the most soulful they have ever written .You can truly imagine being in the forest and you can only hear nature, otherwise absolutely nothing. Fly By Night is the first album with Neil on drums and they took a gigantic step forwards. I love Rush so much.The love began with Moving Pictures and that publication really blew me away.This had not changed 40years later. Take care.

Love when you review any Rush album - Fly by Night (the 2nd album) has a more pure hard rock/progressive feel than some of their later studio albums and like the later ones, is an absolute classic for me. I have the re-issue you showed and the Archives (first 3 albums) version I got back at the end of the '70s. You can't have too many copies of Rush albums in my view. I think The Police albums you showed were an influence on Neil Peart's drumming on the later 'Signals' album. On any half speed mastering albums I have picked up I have yet to find one where I think it makes a significant difference. Re-mastered from the original analogue tapes is a much greater factor.

Hi Melinda, some really good quality albums there. I love the butterfly on the cover of the Julian Lennon one. That looks so cool and I bet you feel so lucky to have it on clear coloured vinyl. I only have one of his albums at the moment but I hope to find some more to add to my collection. The album I have is Valotte, released in 1984. It's an original pressing and it sounds really good. Of course Too Late For Goodbyes is the big hit single on it and I really like that song, but the song on the album I love is Jesse. I think it's a great song. If you don't have that album in your collection I highly recommend it. Love that Police box set too. I have original pressings of all the Police albums but I absolutely agree with you Melinda, I think Synchronicity is without doubt their best album. I really like Zenyatta Mondatta but Synchronicity is my favourite. King Of Pain is a fabulous song and Every Breath You Take is an absolute classic. Another great video Melinda. Take care.

The only Abbey Road Half-Speed Master album I have so far is Dusty Springfield - Dusty In Memphis, and it is a fabulous sounding piece of vinyl. My main listening turntable is a Fluance RT-85 with the Ortofon 2M Blue Cartridge, and I have to say that there are certain albums that the 2M Blue was made for, and this is one of them. All the MFSL albums I have sound great as do some of the Blue Note and other audiophile labels. There are some Windham Hill albums that were half-speed mastered by MFSL and they sound great.That being said, I have picked up some super clean LP's from dollar bins that sound excellent, so who's to say. Hey Melinda!! Plenty of albums better than Abbey Road IMO, but I have a hard time thinking of a pop/rock album that is better. A perfect album. I definitely don’t view the Blood, Sweat & Tears album as better, nothing against that particular album as it’s great, but I’ll take any Beatles album over it if I’m being completely honest. I love MOFI and their pressings but I do sincerely wish that they’d take a stab at more rare, a little less known albums. They have such a platform amongst us in the VC and I really wish they’d at least every now and then...take a swing at an album not everyone knows. I hope that you and your family are doing well and I’ll talk to you soon!

I completely agree with you on MoFi. How many more copies of Carole King's Tapestry is needed? I bought the Blood Sweat and Tears because my copy was worn out but it's been done to death too. I don't think anybody can beat a Beatles record. Maybe Van Halen. Lol. I found a really cool copy of Sonny Rollins The Bridge yesterday. It's a first German press from what I can tell. It's probably better to have an original from the US but this one sounds great and it is like new. You recommended Saxophone Colossus a while ago and I loved it. So I was happy to find The Bridge. Thank you and take care.

Learning to Crawl is my favorite Pretenders record. I called it the "White Thriller" for a while because at the time, Thriller was receiving all the acclaim and awards I think "Learning to Crawl" deserved more.

Hi Melinda, nice discussion about the comparison of Abby road half speed to Mofi. I am a Rush fan, and love their early work as well. But if you are around a handful of drummers, bring up Neil Pert, and see what happens, The sparks will fly. Many see him as a god! And plenty more are like, what’s the big deal? My brother in-law a classically trained percussionist loves Neil. A former boss of mine was a respected jazz drummer had no use for Neil , but at the same time, admitted he probably couldn’t play like that. Kind of funny.

I agree completely, what Neil and the rest of the guys for that matter could do was impressive. I caught them live two or three times over the years, and they were just as tight and polished as their LP’s. Some bands sound great in the studio, but live, agh what happened? Did you have any luck eliminating the noise in your system?

I have a good selection of the Abby Road Half-Speed pressings, and I can now say with some certainty that the half-speed process does not yield any advantage over real-time cutting. What *does* seem to make a difference is cutting 2 x 45 RPM instead of 1 x 33.3 RPM. The Abby Road Half-Speed releases are generally hit or miss, where especially the treble seems to have problems with harshness on some of the releases. I recommend checking the comments on the respective Discogs pages.

Thank you! I will look up the Discogs opinions. My review wasn't exactly glowing but I do think The Police box set is fine for the price. I prefer analog as well, but when they cut a lacquer using a 96k/24 or 192/24 source, it can almost be indistinguishable from tape! But if it comes from a "lower resolution" 44.1k/16bit (or CD specs), you can tell it almost immediately!

The first Mofi records I ordered were The Pretenders and The Cars self titled albums and have been hooked ever since. The only problem is that nowadays Mofi sell out within hours after they are put on sale. I was lucky to be looking at my e-mails when Elusive Disc sent one informing that they had Nilsson on sale. I jumped on it and shortly after that they were sold out. Hope they repress the Alison Krauss soon as that and Hall & Oates are the two at the top of my wish list.

Hi Melinda, You commanded my attention immediately when I saw your Doors T-Shirt, excellent choice for those who love great music! 👍👍👍 Well, I can't say that I'm a Dylan fan. He's a great songwriter and a great musician, but that chain saw sounding voice of his drives me crazy!! 😜 You showed so many great records, and you got me on the Blood, Sweat & Tears album; it really is a fine album. I like the mix of so many different styles of music in that very nice collection of songs. There are songs to ponder, and there are the jazzy hits. I don't have it. I will add it to my collection if I see it in the wild some day. The Police are a great band. They're one of my faves. I have a number of original and contemporary issues of their albums. I always found the quirky album titles to be interesting, and Sting has one of those unusual rock voices. I have an original issue of Rush's Fly By Night; it's a really good album and sounds great on early vinyl. Some great albums came out in the late '80's, so I wouldn't write off that time period too much. I can't forget Metallica's late 80's albums (Master of Puppets & And Justice For All, both killer albums) and U-2's wonderful The Joshua Tree album, arguably their best album. Then there was Living Colour, a very underrated band who kicked it off with their Vivid album in '88. I was still adding rock albums to my collection in those days, but I understand what you mean about some of the very commercial, not so talented bands during that time period. 👍💖🎸😎

Enuff Z’nuff... I was a big fan of the song “New Thing” back when the album was new, but my favorite song by them is “Goodbye” though I didn’t hear that until many years after its release in 1991, on a compilation of love ballads (ironic, considering it’s a breakup song!).

Hello Melinda. I had to drop a note when you showed the BS&T LP. It is without a doubt a 5 star LP. As a change of pace I would recommend their first LP Child Is Father To The Man. Isn’t that a great title? It has a kind of creepy album cover. Don’t expect the same sounding band. Speakers Corner has reissued it though you can find used copies pretty cheap. It’s my favorite BS&T LP but I am an Al Kooper fan too. I also wanted to ask you if you have a copy of the first Montrose LP simply called Montrose. You should like it. It was where Sammy Hagar got his start and it was produced by Ted Templeman who also produced the first Van Halen LP. No doubt the Van Halen brothers spun this LP on their TT many times!

Hey there! I do have a copy of Montrose. I like it! . Would you be surprised to know I don't own any Sammy solo albums? I love him with VH and think his solo work is ok. I guess I just need to start from the beginning wiith Al Kooper. Thank you for the information. Take care.
@armanddimeo65753 жыл бұрын
Child Is Father To The Man is actually a better album than BS and T. Kooper valued artistry over commercial success. This is why he was kicked out of the band before the BS and T album, which sent the band in a more commercial direction. Neither BS and T album equals Abbey Road in my opinion, although they are both excellent albums. Melinda is right on that point. Actually, my choice for the best album of 1969 is The Band's eponymous brown album.

Anyway, I had a question- hopefully you have some insight, I recently got some Japanese pressing titles (Bobby Caldwell-Self Titled, and Swing Out Sister-It's Better To Travel). Both of these titles have a loud & obnoxious screech whenever the singers pronounce the letter S. This is an odd thing to me I haven't heard before. Please lemme know if you have any info on this. I'm sorry for the delayed response. I am not an expert but it sounds like sibilance to me. If things aren't properly done during recording, the sound of words with an "s" can sound very unnatural and not enjoyable to the ear. If many of your records suffer from this then you need to make sure your stylus is working properly and in good condition. This too can cause sibilance. Best wishes and take care.
@harveyjames96023 жыл бұрын
@@MelindaMurphy Ah ok, sibilance is definitely the problem. I just spent over $400 on a new cartridge & stylus, so I know that's not the problem, and this happens with all my cartridges and 4 different turntables. Hi Melinda! Nothing wrong in enjoying Blood Sweat and Tears. Having jazzy and touches of prog rock psychedelic sound in the variations of composing in their songs. I always liked the first 6 albums and just hear the others with some tracks that I like. Thus had the 6 first albums and that including the the actual first before that one with Al Kooper. Whom I love his iconic work in music and albums. David Clayton Thomas was a good sounding choice to come in on that album and stay for a long duration till he bowed out around 2007 or 2008 I think. But anyway because of space the lps of BS&T got discarded to someone I knew that would sell them out to people that got in contact with him. I ironically ran across BS&T 3 yesterday for $2. In good shape. Love Lucretia Mac Evil the classic song that was and other fine music on that one. - I saw David Clayton Thomas and Blood Sweat and Tears for Independence celebration for free on our Riverscape park. July 3 1999. Caught and got some camera pic shots for my photos scrapbook it's in. Hearing the songs of BS&T so great. I too like Chicago but never got to see them. I liked mostly their albums up through Chicago 6. I started to really collect but they were getting just mainly pop and melodic and sounded to get away from their rock pop blues sound they had. Big changes after the passing of Terry Kath and later after Peter Cetera left. Chicago 4 Carnegie Hall live I remember was so good I couldn't stop from enjoying that album so much. Oh well. So many other things you commented on and that I will zero on next with Nilsson Schmilsson and that album just love that album. Think I have it to play lying around somewhere. Having a copy like yours got to sound good though. Coconut and Jump Into The Fire just classic tunes as well on that and really the best Nilsson album in his catalogue IMO from start to finish. But, that's just me. Right now I am praying that McCartney's RAM (half speed mastered also) is still at Amazon for less than $5,874,832.13 by the time payday rolls around. That is my absolute favorite McCartney album! I mean, c'mon......"We're so sorry, Uncle Albert......" The critics had no friggin sense of humor back then. Thanks for another great video, Melinda!!!

I like Ram too. I already have 2 copies of it so I can't bring myself to buy this one. I'm sure it's going to be great. Abbey Road should have one the Grammy. Having said that, Blood Sweat & Tears is a great album. The Grammys have become a bit of a joke anyway. Lol. Take care.

Friend of mine walked to Bob Dylan's mansion in Hell's canyon . Bob's butler answered the door , came back after talking with Bob . Told my friend to come back tomorrow , he never went back

How long have you had that Schmilson mofi? I ordered mine about 6 months ago and I'm still waiting. Than BS&T album, I bought it on cassette at the ripe old age of 12 lol I liked the hits off of it but didn't care for the rest but through the years i learned to like it. I played it on my 70's portable cassette recorder at the time then later a stereo cassette deck, there i realized how "live" it sounded. I now have the One step and the analogue productions box set. Funny how that works.

I ordered the Nilsson album a couple of weeks ago. The mail has been very weird lately. Some things I order take forever. Mobile Fidelity is fairly close to where I live. That's why I received it so quickly. I know that's frustrating considering you pre-ordered yours so long ago. You have both amazing versions of Blood, Sweat and Tears. I'm sure they are both amazing. Take care.

Hi Melinda, awesome video! At first I said “No freekin Way” to Any album being Better than Abbey Road at that time. One of my favorite albums of All Time. But now I want to throw this BS&T album on my table and drop the needle on it! Any record that makes that kind of claim, I Must hear! Lol. I’m not even gonna KZbin the album. I will only hear it on vinyl on my kickass system! Then.. and only then will I make my opinion on that matter, lol. You’ve inspired me to buy that record now and given me a new record idea. I’m running out of ideas, so Thanks 😊. As for the Pretenders Crawl record, Great Album! Middle of the Road was one of my favorites for the sheer “make you wanna bob your head and dance” quality of it, not to mention that Drum work! Great tracks on that album. I do not have the MoFi of that But! I did get lucky to find a Sealed original and It Sounds Awesome!”. Would love to see a shootout between the two copies. Also have the entire Police studio catalog (all Mint originals). I treasure this collection. Sounds Amazing! You got lucky with the Rush! Been looking for that and their debut album for a Long time! Anyway Cheers! Keep ‘em coming!

I need to find a few more Rush albums too. People have been buying them up since Neil passed away. The first one and Hemispheres is on my list. The Blood Sweat and Tears album is good but I still can't believe it won for Album Of The Year over Abbey Road. I will be curious to hear your verdict. There is no right or wrong answer and they are both great albums. Thank you and tak care.

I think the artist who did the fly by night cover did the kiss solo album covers. I heard that somewhere.

Hey , got a collectors personal question for you. What and how do you deal with when buying new records showing up with corner dings , slightly damaged or severely damaged of records that you actually spent your money on. As far as what do you let slide and file into your collection new/original And then at what point do you request a replacement copy from who ever you purchased the record from or is that not something you typically do? Just curious and asking other collectors I know that have as many as we do and just getting everybody stance.
@MelindaMurphy3 жыл бұрын
This is a terrific question. I'm probably not quite as picky as some people. If it's just a tiny ding or crease, I will let it slide. Big creases are a huge no for me. I always return the ones with big creases. I also return anything wrong with vinyl if it affects play. Skips and records with several loud pops also go back. If it is a special record that costs extra money, I expect near perfection. For example, I received a Mobile Fidelity record recently with a visible scratch that I could hear. They sent me a replacement copy of that lp. I hope that helps. Take care.

Do you have very many picture disc and what do you think about doing a video sometime just on your picture disc and what you think of them? I've been starting to collect a few and I'm not sure how I feel about them especially I just got Michael Jackson but mostly to hang on the wall. I have Sammy picture disc RSD couple years ago but that hangs on the wall. Just thought it might be a good video for you to do sometime

It would be a very short video. Lol. I think I have 5 picture discs. The newer ones sound good but the older ones aren't so great. Lol.

I have to say, I have a few Abbey Road Half Speed Masters and they all are absolutely fantastic. The new Paul McCartney Ram is one and holy cow does it blow me away. I have a Rolling Stones half speed, and McCartney I half speed as well. Both are amazing sounding. I haven't heard one yet that didn't sound great. Rock on Melinda!

I would love to hear the Ram album. I'm glad that it sounds good. People are complaining about the Rolling Stones half-speed masters. I don't have one but my Queen and Police box sets sound good to me. I'm not disappointed with any of mine either. Take care.
