So should you cut the floor panels so the ends touch, or have some overlap?

You can do either in this instance I have butt welder then but you could overlap if you wanted

Marc you said James has had that Mini for about ten years, so has it just been sitting in his back garden all that time? (It does seem to have attracted a lot of rust in that time ?)

No it came off the road around 2019. This car has been to Italy and back and many other trips its lasted well but the dreaded rust has caught up with it.
