Roger Waters emerged as their new creative force with Let There Be More Light and the classic Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun while Rick Wright contributed Remember a Day, and Syd said farewell with Jugband Blues. Pink Floyd is without a doubt one of the greatest classic rock bands of all time. They began in the 60s with Roger Waters on bass, Nick Mason on drums, Richard Wright on organ and Syd Barrett on lead guitar and vocals. Syd was the band's leader and chief songwriter in the early days, penning their first singles Arnold Layne and See Emily Play. This would lead to the release of their 1967 album Piper at the Gates of Dawn, featuring classics like Astronomy Domine, Flaming, Bike and the epic psychedelic instrumental Interstellar Overdrive. However due to Syd's intake of LSD mixed with a breakdown involving schizophrenia, he would gradually be pushed out of the band he fronted, being replaced with David Gilmour on guitar. This would become Pink Floyd's classic lineup with Roger and Rick taking up of a songwriters role. A Saucerful of Secrets was the only album to feature all five band members and Syd's final composition with Floyd, Jugband Blues. Other songs included are Corporal Clegg and See Saw. Following release of this album, the band would struggle to find their new sound on albums like More, Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother. But by 1971, they began to find their feet on Meddle, particularly with the opening instrumental One of These Days and the epic piece Echoes, taking up the entire B-side. With Roger now taking over the lyrics department and coming up with conceptual ideas, they would find more creative outlets through Live at Pompeii and Obscured by Clouds. However 1973's Dark Side of the Moon would become one of the most successful albums of all time, staying on the charts for nearly 13 years and still a best seller today. Roger's lyrics dealt with the evils of society driving one to madness, while the music was nearly one entire inter-connected piece. Money was a hit single. Their 1975 followup Wish You Were Here, featuring the opening and closing piece Shine On You Crazy Diamond (a tribute to Syd Barrett who even showed up at the sessions), is thought to be equally great, if not greater, as Dark Side. But with Roger assuming more creative control, tensions between the band were getting worse by the album Animals and even more so on The Wall, a triumph in concept, but the album that essentially ended the classic Pink Floyd lineup. Rick was fired from the band creating a greater rift between Roger and Dave. Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 became their best selling single and Comfortably Numb remains one of their most popular tunes.1983's The Final Cut was Roger's final album with Pink Floyd before he officially left, leaving Dave and Nick to reunite with Rick for 1987's Momentary Lapse of Reason. Roger sued to break up the band, but failed to do so instead focusing on his solo career. The Gilmour led Floyd would produce 1994's The Division Bell (High Hopes) with Rick now sharing vocal and songwriting duties again. It wasn't until 2005's Live 8 concert when Dave, Nick and Rick reunited with Roger for a short set giving closure for many fans. Syd never performed with Pink Floyd again and died in 2006. Rick died in 2008. The album The Endless River was dedicated in his honor. Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets performs a lot of Syd's material keeping his legacy alive.

The kazoo! 🥳🥳🥳 It’s not A GREAT song but it’s such a fun song. Especially if you like the chaotic sounding psychedelic pop sound. It’s like a lesser version of Flaming. But I loved the C.C. tho.

I think A Saucerful of Secrets is quite a good album my favorite track on A Saucerful of Secrets would be "Remember a Day", but other favorites would be "Let There Be More Light", "Saucerful of Secrets", and "Jugband Blues"

I don’t think I agreed on a single take in this video lmao, I think See-Saw is a top 10 PF song of all time… Yes I said it, it’s so incredibly beautiful. I love Corporal Clegg as well. Saucerful is a top 3 album for me and I’ve gone through Floyds discography for years, I can play this record on repeat without getting tired of it and I have zero complaints about the production/mixing. I’m confused, but I guess it’s just an acuired taste as you say.

I agree with you on See-Saw. I love how mellow the music is, while also being very melancholic. I think Rick Wright was a great bridge between the styles of Syd and Roger. Rick's songs could touch on dark subject matters, while also having a childlike sound to them. In this case, the song is about a brother and sister slowly drifting away from each other. This is a track I can really relate to, as there was a time where my sister would isolate herself and we wouldn't talk as much. I slowly started to feel like an outcast, like I didn't matter to her anymore. So, it's a really powerful song to me. Production wise, some songs do sound a bit fuzzy and compressed. It is hard to hear the vocals sometimes. However, after hearing many bootleg recordings of live Pink Floyd shows, I think an album not having the best mixing isn't much of an issue to me. Saucerful is a top three album for sure, even if I’m a bit tired of it. I've just listened to it a lot, but I still love it.

I have listened to - and liked - Pink Floyd's music for so long that to hear other people describe it as "weird period music" is just fine with me, because it actually IS music from a different time. There's a saying, "The Past is like a different country - they do things differently there." "Acquired Taste" is actually a good description, too.

I actually liked Saucerful more than Piper. There was something about the constant juxtaposition of tracks that made it special to me. I also think the title track (and the title track for their NEXT album) is very reminiscent of what they’ll eventually make once they make Meddle EDIT: I meant with their next studio album Atom Heart Mother, not More

I love Corporal Clegg (especially the kazoo), I love See saw, and I like the fact that the album "did not know where it wanted to go". Pink Floyd were just experimenting and did not care about what would come out of it, and neither did I as a listener.

Jugband Blues is an absolute haunting masterpiece. The orchestra going from that uplifting nostalgic sad medley, to devolving into madness, much like Syd himself. Then suddenly, the audio cuts, as if a moment off clarity, where Syd delivers the tragic final lines. The chords from the beginning are now swapped, with the A minor now on the downbeat, a sort off sad reflection off the more hopeful first verse. I love Syd, and this is perhaps his most beautiful song.

The Floyd were very uncomfortable about releasing such personal songs as “Scream Thy Last Scream” and “Vegetable Man” on the album. Former manager Peter Jenner described their attitude this way: “They somehow felt they were a bit indecent, like putting out nude pictures of a famous actress: it just wasn’t cricket.” I can see that.

Legendary? What the f*** are you talking about that song is the biggest piece of s*** that syd ever wrote. He was already fried and you can tell by that song it's so stupid and pitiful. I thought the song was cool at first but as time went on I realized how bad it was. I thought it started off nice with the acoustic part....but Then it gets really bad when The Salvation Army comes in and starts making these awful sounds on the horns and it sounds so bad it's pitiful. It's pale in comparison to astronomy domine or lucifer sam those were great Syd songs. To be totally honest they should have put on careful with that ax Eugene I think it was written around that time and it's a way better song they should have thrown that on there at the end of the album instead. It would've made a great difference if it was put on the album. I know some people don't like See saw but I thought it was a nice song very trippy.

I've already made it clear how much I love this album. However, I do agree that Set the Controls and the title track would get much better live versions on Ummagumma and Live at Pompeii. I also do agree that Vegetable Man should have been on there as well. I think the album really needed more Syd stuff in general, to give him a better sendoff. Maybe they could have also included Scream Thy Last Scream or In the Beechwoods. Corporal Clegg and See-Saw are still amazing songs to me though. Gotta disagree on that.

A few years back I saw Nick Mason do a bunch of material from this period with his new band (check them out if you can!) and he talked about Syd a bit -- which made a lot of us cry -- before doing Vegetable Man live, which is something I never thought I'd see...

Thanks again, JT! Your review was patiently awaited and I wasn't disappointed. I was excited to hear this for the 1st time. Unfortunately, it hasn't worn that well. I guess when you're a teen, you listen to a favorite band, it's usually a treat hearing the album for the 1st time. There are some good songs and I wish Syd had got the mental help he seemed to need. Nothing more depressing than a shining light go out too soon.

Julia Dream is a great song, but it isn't on my copy of Saucerful of Secrets. It is on Relics along with other great non album songs like Arnold Layne ( even though the chorus sounds like on a plane) , and See Emily Play .

I've always been disappointed by Saucerful, but I think for opposite reasons. You mention that the band didn't have enough material to fill out the album, but I've always felt they had enough in the vault to have put out one of the darkest, strangest psychedelic doubles of all time. A lot of the songs that stick out like sore thumbs make better sense and simply "feel" better alongside singles, non-album cuts, and unreleased material from the same period; and Syd's departure is better documented by inclusion of these tracks as well. My proposal: Side A 1. In the Beechwoods 2. Vegetable Man 3. Remember a Day 4. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun Side B 1. Paintbox 2. Scream Thy Last Scream 3. See-Saw 4. A Saucerful of Secrets (I cheat and use the anachronistic Pompeii version for my playlists) 4. Point Me at the Sky

An interesting track listing for sure, however three of those tunes, “Point me At the Sky”, “Careful with that Axe” and “The Embryo” were all recorded after Saucerful was release so they wouldn’t have been in the vaults at that time. Also there was this policy at the time not to include singles or b-sides on LPs feeling they’d affect sales, The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, they all followed the same rule. I do still think Vegetable Man would have elevated the album but like I said the band was uncomfortable with that one.

Considering the circumstances - some sessions with Syd as he was becoming increasingly difficult to work with - then he was basically asked to leave the band - with his old friend replacing him - and Gilmour trying to figure out his place in a chaotic situation - overall it's a pretty solid sophomore effort.

Corporal Clegg is both lyrically and musically a through line to the Wall and The Final Cut. Roger lays his agenda out there. The context for this album is not just Sid’s departure, but also the experimentation that happened over the whole 67-70 period. Live, they had always been an experimental outfit, which is ultimately what leads through tracks like Careful with that Axe, Eugene to Echoes with dozens of others in between. The issue is the studio and supervisory production of the record label. As soon as they reposition their contract on Harvest the need to be a pop band with singles disappears and they find their creative raison d’etre. And the kazoos and pict ranting and clockwork tumbles are at least not as embarrassing as The Laughing Gnome by David Bowie. Even Wright’s songs on Saucer aren’t as fey and show business as that early Bowie stuff.

I agree that Controls and the title track got better live. I love Remember a Day and Syd features prominently on that one, a lot of the work on it was done in 1967. The studio version of Controls has a bit of both Syd and Dave in the mix. Jugband Blues is chilling and depressing but I do like it, what a swansong for Syd. Corporal Clegg if I had to guess might be trying to copy Zappa's Mothers of Invention and The Fugs who's early work both featured a lot of ironic use of kazoo. When I hear it I imagine kids playing war games and the promo film for drives this home cause it ends with Pink Floyd having a food fight while wearing army gear.

The Album is what it is, a transition, and as such, it is a good cross section view of the compositions they had at the time, I enjoy this album more and more over time, a little bit of the Pretty Things FS Sorrow, Sci-fi raga rock and Syd. Don't really agree on some of your takes of these songs, always liked the atmospheric feel of and production of Remember a Day and See Saw, Rick seemed to be able to summon up a bit of Syd's child-like wide eyed innocent in composition and lyric, not sure where you would have mashed in Vegetable Man on the LP or Scream Thy Last Scream for that matter...just a different band without him, not nessisarily better or worse, just different. A bit of a sophomore slump but not a bad record. Who knew Normal Smith could drum? I like transitional LP's personally and this is definitely one of those. Would have liked to have more Barrett/Gilmour guitar combo's but that's life ain't it? Cheers

Syd cast a long shadow and any follow up to Piper was going to be tough. That said, I thought Saucerful was a great attempt by the boys. The title track in particular set the pace for the decade to follow: a multi-part track that would become a concert staple. Set the controls is a rocking opener and worthy follow up to Astronomy. Remember a Day is another standout with dreamy lyrics and an excellent slide guitar from Syd. Set the Controls is next and shows Roger’s growth as a songwriter. It is yet another song that would become a concert workhorse. Corporal Clegg is a callback to the whimsy of the first album - just not as good. See-Saw is a slight affair. More of a relief after the power of Saucerful and a transition to…. Jugband Blues. Syd’s nose thumbing at the band. One of the most beautiful, delicate, sweet, fuck you’s ever committed to tape. And there you have it. A unique album in the PF pantheon. Best album ever? No. Important? You better believe it!

It's also one of the best songs to be played loud. The Beates wanted Helter Skelter to sound loud to compete with the Who's loud sounding I Can See For Miles. I think Corpiral Clegg is louder than them both.

You Know who you should look into next? Brian setzer. He led a rockabilly revival in the 80s called the stray cats and later a swing band In the 90s called the brian setzer orchestra which won him a grammy. I feel that you will like his style as he is a throwback to old school music. Love the video

I love this album but I can see why you don't like it. This is also Nick Mason's favourite one. I don't really know if this is official or just a bootleg but there was an unreleased 1968 album which could have been if Syd wouldn't have left the band.

Love the various live versions of the title track, but the one on this LP is whack. I made my own version with "Vegetable Man," "Scream Thy Last Scream" and "Julia Dream" in place of the title track, and it makes a MUCH better album that's more PIPER-esque

Saucerful to me is not that bad, it’s actually a step up for Piper, and a much more better composition musical aspects and better writing than Piper!! Almost every song on the album is epic! It’s as good as Dark Side, Wish You We’re Here, The Wall, hell even the Division Bell! It gets a gold fish for me! My Essential Tracks are Jugband Blues, Rick’s first 2 songs he sang and Corporal Clegg.

@JTCurtisMusic The way they had to search their souls for musical originality to fill the vacuum left by Syd. I always prefer the early work of bands as they experiment with the medium before they become rich and famous (and often thereby bloated, tired and banal). Floyd has a way to lure me into albums by the opening tracks. No difference here. While not my fav Floyd album it has its moments of hooks that will catch me off guard. Another album where I am listening more to Nick masons drumming closer and really enjoying him

I saw this Somewhere Andrew King, Pink Floyds Manager at the time later said that the Guitar Solo on "Let There Be More Light" on the album Is Performed By Syd Barrett not David Gilmour Although Im not sure if its true because The Solo is not really like Syds Style of guitar playing at least in my opinion

I like this album, for what it is. I do think the live versions of the title track on Ummagumma and Live at Pompeii are much better, especially with Gilmour's vocal at the end. This was the beginning of the band's wilderness years where they struggled without Syd before reaching massive success with "Dark Side".

My ranking from my favourite to least: 1 - Let There Be More Light 2 - Corperal Clegg 3 - Remember A Day 4 - Set The Control For The Heart Of The Sun 5 - A Saucerful Of Secrets 6 - Jugland Blues 7 - See-Saw Techically A Saucerful Of Secrets by all rights should be sitting at Number 1 but this particular VERSION of A Saucerful Of Secrets is the worst ever! Which is ironic considering that A Saucerful Of Secrects is the album title track, the one track that should be showcasing the best song. Ummagumma and Pompeii versions of A Saucerful Of Secrets are a billion times better.

One of their BEST albums. All songs set a strong feel and mood (except Corporal Clegg) in keeping with the great cover art. Real creative experimentation and sound. The sounds and their complex interplay on the Saucerful track are beyond what all other bands had done and it remains a spine tingling experience today. Dave Gilmour, when he spoke about it, seemed still in awe (and satisfied) with what they achieved on that track. Listen to the sweet slide guitar work on Remember A Day especially if you have the instrumental without the vocal...was that Syd's?

set the controls is my favourite Nick Mason playing. I actually quite like A Saucerful... it is more homogenous to someone who experienced sixties music later and not in the day. and I do not hate Corporal Clegg or seesaw as much as you do... and I felt Jugband to be meh... even if it's Sid's... he had lost it, and this was evidence as to why the change...

When people say they think Piper is better than this one, it just makes me believe that they don't like either but feel more pressure to say they like Piper. A Saucerful of Secrets takes everything Piper did and improves upon it in every way. Let There Be More Light alone is better than anything on the previous album. It's the first album that really sounds like Pink Floyd.

just want to mention this before you get up to the wall the wall live is so much better than the studio album, especially mother, comfortably numb, run like hell also money was better live in 1974 with the little jam between gilmours guitar and waters bass
