Pink Floyd is without a doubt one of the greatest classic rock bands of all time. They began in the 60s with Roger Waters on bass, Nick Mason on drums, Richard Wright on organ and Syd Barrett on lead guitar and vocals. Syd was the band's leader and chief songwriter in the early days, penning their first singles Arnold Layne and See Emily Play. This would lead to the release of their 1967 album Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Their live shows were equally inventive incorporating unique light shows. However due to Syd's intake of LSD mixed with a breakdown involving schizophrenia, he would gradually be pushed out of the band he fronted, being replaced with David Gilmour on guitar. This would become Pink Floyd's classic lineup with Roger taking more of a songwriter role. A Saucerful of Secrets was the only album to feature all five band members. More came out in 1969. Pink Floyd was still finding their voice, focusing more on albums rather than singles. It was on Ummagumma where concert versions of Astronomy Domine, Careful with that Axe Eugene, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun and Saucerful evolved their sound. The studio disc contained experimental tracks. The album sold well proving there was life for Pink Floyd after Syd. In 1970, Atom Heart Mother proved to be a success with the 23 minute instrumental suite orchestrated by Ron Geesin. 1971's Meddle would turn out to be an important staple for the band with the rocking opener One of these Days I'm Going to Cut You Into Little Pieces, featuring a rare spoken vocal by Nick, Roger's echoing bass line and Dave's Slide Guitar. The flip side, another 23 minute piece, Echoes, featuring Dave and Rick on vocals, is often regarded as Progressive Rock's finest moment, from the opening ping of Rick's leslie piano. They would also perform both these songs along with earlier classics Live at Pompeii. The Obscured by Clouds soundtrack appeared in 1972 with tracks like Burning Bridges and Free Four. However 1973's Dark Side of the Moon would become one of the most successful albums of all time, staying on the charts for nearly 13 years and still a best seller today. Roger's lyrics dealt with the evils of society driving one to madness, while the music was nearly one entire inter-connected piece (making it difficult to separate for a playlist or a best of / greatest hits compilation). Still standouts like Money, Time and Great Gig in the Sky are favorites among fans. Their 1975 followup Wish You Were Here, featuring the opening and closing piece Shine On You Crazy Diamond (a tribute to Syd Barrett who even showed up at the sessions), is thought to be equally great, if not greater, as Dark Side. But tensions between the band were beginning to rear their head. 1977 saw the release of Animals, likening three animals: Dogs, Sheep and Pigs to various classes of society. Roger became the band's main frontman and sole songwriter with Dave occasionally sharing the mic and writing credits. Tensions grew during the tour when Roger ended up spitting on a fan in Montreal and coming up with the idea for The Wall to separate himself from the audience. 1979 would see the release of The Wall, the album and later the tour and film. Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 became their best selling single and Comfortably Numb remains one of their most popular tunes. But it nearly broke up the band as Roger fired Rick for lack of output, creating a greater rift between him and Dave. 1983's The Final Cut was Roger's final album with Pink Floyd before he officially left, leaving Dave and Nick to reunite with Rick for 1987's Momentary Lapse of Reason. Roger sued to break up the band, but failed to do so instead focusing on his solo career. The Gilmour led Floyd would produce 1994's The Division Bell, a return to form for many fans with Rick now sharing vocal and songwriting duties again. It wasn't until 2005's Live 8 concert when Dave, Nick and Rick reunited with Roger for a short set giving closure for many fans. Syd died in 2006. Rick died in 2008. The album The Endless River was dedicated in his honor. Pink Floyd's legacy has continued to inspire fans and aspiring musicians, myself included.

I would say that Echoes is the song where David Gilmour finally comes into his own as a guitarist. We've seen hints of it on Atom Heart Mother, but on Echoes we see the first time when he paints landscapes with his solos.

In the last minute of the song Gilmour throws in some low gutteral blues licks that really are a small indication of what he would soon blossom into. Listen closely to the last minute of the song, it's there. : )

Do you like Pink Floyd? Their early work was a little too psychedelic for my taste. But when Meddle came out in '71, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. They've been compared to King Crimson, but I think Floyd has a far more lighter sense of humor. In '73, Pink Floyd released this; Dark Side of The Moon, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Brain Damage/ Eclipse ". Two songs so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about someone losing their mind and feeling small in the scope of the universe. It's also a personal statement about the band itself. Hey, Paul!

Echoes is a song that basically encapsulates existence as a whole; it all starts in a vast darkness, with literally no sense of direction or purpose. But eventually, all it takes is one simple anomaly to completely break through and become much more than what it was expected to be.

Now we're finally into the golden age, even though I would personally consider Atom Heart Mother to be the start. It's fascinating to see the progression from Ummagumma to Atom Heart Mother to Meddle. Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother both had the individual members writing their own material, while Atom Heart Mother and Meddle both have 23 minute long songs taking up an entire side of the record. And during this sequence of albums, they would refine their sound and become more cohesive as a band. Even though they're still experimenting with sounds like on Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother (with Seamus being the most "UmmaMother" sounding piece), it's obvious that Pink Floyd is maturing. The jams on Meddle are incredible. Even on a laidback song like San Tropez, there's still that awesome jazzy piano jam from Rick. It's rare for a Pink Floyd song to have such a relaxed and upbeat feel, and that's what makes San Tropez one of my favorite songs in their catalog. And I haven't even gotten to the big one yet. Echoes is a masterpiece, plain and simple. The 23 minute epic proves that Pink Floyd could carry on and then some, even without Syd Barrett. The build up, the iconic descending riff, the thought provoking lyrics, the funky jam, the scary as hell whale sounds, the return, all of it is incredible. It deserves to be in anyone's list of top ten Pink Floyd songs (or top ten classic rock songs in general!). Overall, I'm not sure if I'm a bigger fan of Atom Heart Mother or Meddle. I would give both albums a gold fish, but picking the superior one is tough for me. While Echoes is the superior 23 minute track, I prefer the other songs on Atom Heart Mother over the ones on Meddle. Summer '68 in particular is amazing and also in my top ten Pink Floyd songs. I'll call it a toss up for now, but I love both albums and this is when Pink Floyd really got good and proved themselves to be an amazing band. The entire decade of the 70's for Pink Floyd might be the best streak of albums for any classic rock artist. From Atom Heart Mother to The Wall and every album in between, all of them are incredible in my eyes. Do you also plan to cover Relics, their compilation album? There's an exclusive song on that album called Biding My Time, and that's another one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs. I love how jazzy it is, while still having an essential Pink Floyd jam to it with a killer horn section. Either way, I can't wait for your video on Obscured by Clouds, which is definitely one of their most underrated albums.

Love Guy Pratt. He’s essentially an official member of Pink Floyd, taking Rogers place as bassist. He’s been their touring bassist and sometimes vocalist since 1988, and is the bassist on the Division Bell.

We climbed the side of a mountain in the middle of our city one day all on LSD, laid down under a tree, looked out at the city and listened to Floyd all day, including Meddle. Wonderful experience, can confirm!

The cover is a photo of a hippopotamus' ear underwater! The football crowd chant was recorded at Anfield, Liverpool's stadium, and The Kop Choir (The Kop was the end of the stadium for home fans) even released a couple of albums of recordings of the songs the crowd regularly sang at games.

Meddle is personally my favorite album by Pink Floyd and one of my favorite albums of all time my favorite track on Meddle is "One of These Days", but other favorites would be "Fearless", "San Tropez", and "Echoes"

I've always considered Meddle as highly under-appreciated by the world... If nothing else (and it's really EVERYTHING ELSE!), it gave a beautiful insight into the breadth of Pink Floyd. I know, that I've played San Tropez and Pillow of Winds to people, and they've had NO IDEA it was Pink Floyd performing... in which lies its intrigue and elegance. Cheers!

Fearless was the song off Meddle that blew me away as a young kid. I disagree about Dave's voice on it; I think it's one of his most beautifully sung songs. And NEVER understood why Echoes isn't mentioned in the group of "best David Gilmour guitar solos" songs!

Enjoyed this thorough analysis of what is now my second favorite Pink Floyd album, after 'Wish You Were Here' (I should note that I'm not a particular Pink Floyd fan, though I acknowledge their importance, influence, and undeniable artistry). Despite the epic scope and avant-garde wizardry of "Echoes", I'm especially impressed with "One of These Days" (almost heavy metal in its power) and also especially appreciate "Fearless" (even "Seamus", which I agree is the album's weakest track, has a charm of its own). There is an interesting animated short from 1972, called 'French Windows' (directed by Ian Emes), which uses "One of These Days" as its soundtrack. It's a haunting film, and is a noteworthy precursor to the music-video genre that started to develop later in the decade.

Nice review, thank you. Meddle is one of my favorite Pink Floyd albums. However, I may one of the few fans who prefers side one. Echoes is indeed a great song signaling what Floyd would become in later albums,but the tracks on side one, often criticized for being a loosely connected pile of throwaways by some, shows a range and diversity of style rarely seen from Floyd. One of these days absolutely rocks, Pillow of winds makes me think of the early days after meeting my wife, Fearless has some of my favorite lyrics and is my favorite song to play along with (once I learned the open tuning), San tropez is a great unexpected blues tune, and Seamus is hilarious. I could only aspire to write any one of these songs, and listening to them makes me happy.

It’s one of my favourite Floyd albums - restful (in the main), inventive, and as just about everyone says, the start of Pink Floyd’s classic period. It’s a very cohesive album.

I regard Meddle as my favourite Pink Floyd album. It contains three of my favourite songs, One of These Days, Fearless, and Echoes. I was late in discovering the band and it was The Wall which opened those doors and I immediately went back and bought their earlier albums. I have to admit that I've outgrown the relentless pessimism that pretty much defined the band from Dark Side to The Wall and I've grown to appreciate that period in their history when they were experimenting with various sounds as they were looking for an identity after Syd Barrett left. It's very hit and miss but there are many gems to be found and they recorded some of their most beautiful songs. I like to call this their "psychedelic folk" era and it was not yet the sounding board for Roger Waters ' neuroses and hang ups that it would become. This was music for the mind and Echoes paints these phantasmagorical images that can be interpreted many ways. I agree that Seamus is the weakest track but it could have been worse and they included Mademoiselle Knobs instead, which I'd nominate as being among their worst recordings and can only be found on the Pompeii film. But if you play the albums in chronological order you can see that evolution that blossomed with Meddle. I am a fierce defender of this albums of the late 50's to about '71 or '72 with the release of Obscured By Clouds. They take a lot bashing, frequently by the band themselves, but I prefer them over the relentlessly grim albums later on.

It's difficult to choose, with so much great work to narrow down from, but I would put Echoes as my favorite Pink Floyd track. Not a perfect track, not part of a perfect album: Dark Side or Wish You Were Here. But a track that has pulled me out of the depths of the black dog ever since I was a teenager. Dark room, perfect stereo, lying the wrong way round on a bed with legs up against the wall. Transcendental.The 'whale song' section is crucial to the whole track as it gives room for the finale.

I think I made a pretty good playlist, which I call "Childhood's End" after the Obscured By Clouds track, that serves as a good way to hear elements Pink Floyd were showing over the three albums before Dark Side of the Moon of just where they were going. Echoes was absolutely a big part, but they had already developed a pretty good toolbox. Am I the only person who genuinely loves Seamus? The lilting piano and guitar with the harmonica paints a beautiful picture of lazily relaxing in a hammock watching the sunset in the country. The only thing wrong with it is that its not long enough. And people put this track on par with the McCartney's Wild Honey Pie...

What makes Pink Floyd ahead of its time was its ability to take the Opposite ends of the musical spectrum around at that time (blues rock and jazz) and fuse them into a genre all its own and this can especially be heard on Meddle. A modern example of this would be BabyMetal with the fusion of pop music and metal. Bob Marley gave Caribbean/Latin/African rythmes a folk music sound. Then there’s Santana rock-Latin fusion

I have to agree on the GoldFish! This album is truly a phenomenal to listen to but however, the last 2 songs before Echoes aren’t quite as strong and interested! But regardless, no doubt that Echoes is a brilliant masterpiece, also One of These Days is a true epic rock n’ roll instrumental! As well as A Pillow of Wind and Fearless.

Nice review of a great album. One morning, i was 10 years old, my dad drove me and some classmates to school. It was winter, so it was still dark outside. Meddle was playing on cassette. We where still sleepy and didn´t payed much attention to the music. When the creepy part of Echoes started, my dad turned up the volume and said "beware, the witches are comming". We kids got pretty scared. My dad just laughed.

Pink Floyd is my favorite band but yes most of their early work post Syd is not worth listening to up until Atom Heart Mother and even that one is inconsistent quality. Meddle is when they achieved a high level of greatness that they maintained for years.

This is personaly my ravorite Floyd album, it's not their best but is the one i come back to the most. By the way, if you ever get a chance to listen to the quad mix of echoes give It a go, it's very 70's and little gimmicky but it's also really good. You can find It at a reasonable price in one of the individual releases of the Early years set

One If These Days is the greatest Floyd opener for me. If you can lure me in with an opener like One Of These Days I am sold right away. I can go on about this track and how much it has stuck with me since I first heard it. May be the Floyd song that got the fandom running. I still remember the first time I heard it well over 35 years ago stealing my brothers Meddle cassette tape intrigued by the cover. Never been the same since even though my bro beat the crap out of me for stealing it. Well worth the beating Nothing needs to be said about Echos which has never been said. What a masterpiece. Entire album is tight. Agree with pretty much your entire review. Love this album so much. Oh and it’s my go to Nick Mason album. Nick never gets enough love.

One Of These Days is my (second) favorite piece off Meddle. It opens up Space Odyssey so well, really sets the overall tone of the film once youve seen it already. And when it cuts to Pillow -- you're excited about your next two hours.

This is my 4th favourite album from Pink Floyd, I love the into of One of these days, San Tropez is another one of my favourites and of course Echoes (which I consider to be my favourite song behind Shine on you crazy diamond (Pts. 1-9) )

Atom Heart Mother is a fantastic album. I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan; I think that David and Rick just locked together. Echoes, Fearless and One of These Days are the heart of the record. Meddle is out of balance but Echoes really made the album.

My friends sister had the LP in ‘72. We’d steal it as it’s still my favorite PF album. That one section in Echoes still scares me 😮. I remember hearing it at 10 and thinking that must be what a bad trip sounds/feels like.

I am a big Football (Soccer) fan and my favorite team is Liverpool and I love Fearless because of that, You'll Never Walk Alone is the best anthem in Football, so it works so good with Pink Floyd music, tho Roger is a Arsenal fan, a rival of Liverpool, I love the version of Nick Mason too, amazing song 👍

Echoes and One Of These Days are fucking earth shattering, but the rest of the A side doesn’t compare even a little to how much better the B side of Atom Heart Mother is. Still think AHM is a better album overall personally.

one thing that's interesting about Meddle... if you ask a person from the UK what the cover is, they say AN EAR... in the US, the pressing process here had problems with the colors on the cover. so it came our as a bland blue... and the instability of the ink and tendency to fade in weeks... left it impossible to really see

I admit I never tried watching it on Shrooms. Last time I tripped, we were listening to Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life - which was still amazing.
