I've noticed for myself that when I start slipping into depression, I start letting my house get dirty and messy. I consider tidying up daily as a part of my self care plan. It can also help prevent me from falling deeper into my episodes.

Yes. As soon as I become overwhelmed with whatever is happening I start to neglect the house. Moreso than myself. Keeping tabs on how the kitchen looks is a great indicator of how I'm feeling. :P

A super smart lady I know have me the secret. Treat yourself how you would treat a three year old. 1. Good healthy snacks, frequently throughout the day. 2. Lots of water! 3. Some time outside 4. A little time in front of a good show. 5. A yummy dinner. 6. A walk after a yummy dinner. 7. A bath after the awesome walk. 8. A book after the bath. 9. A few minutes of quiet time, after the book. Finish your mug of warm milk, if that's how you roll. 10. Lights out early with a super hydrating night cream. ASMR videos are a wonderful option, as is cuddling with a stuffy or a dog or whatever else that makes you feel at peace.

I wouldn’t advise to watch ASMR before sleeping because first of all the blue light from you device won’t help you sleep and feel relaxed,Second of all you turned your lights off it is very bad to watch with you light off. But all you advice are grate!

Because my depression and anxiety make me want to withdraw, part of my self-care is setting up hangout dates with friends and family. Stuff that is casual and low stress like going for a walk or grabbing coffee or visiting the library. That way I feel less stress about going out and I look forward to socializing, something I find difficult at times

Social activity is crucial against stress. Having a social network is crucial for survival. No one can survive alone. Old people died of loneliness very quickly during the pandemic. I sometimes wonder how many of those covid deaths were actually lonely old people

It's so refreshing to get a non-prescriptive guide to self-care! As well-intended as posts with lists of how to practice self-care work, they're not always that constructive. It's nice to see a video that 1. sets out how to actually make a self-care plan and 2. acknowledges that different things work for different people!

I like reading before bed, journaling in the evening and meditating in the morning. I don't always do these things but i feel better when I do. Cutting out the internet before bed was a great way to get better sleep. I also notice I stick to a bedtime when I read before bed.

Miss Kelly Renee yeah but what if you get hungry then you have to go out and eat and then look at the Internet again because who knows what's happened since you been gone. And then you have to do all that prep for bed again... 😧

My tips for myself: 1 - If I feel down for a long time, I won`t be shy about going to the psychologist because it is one of the fastest and really vital ways to understand what happens to me. 2 - to be a friend to me. I try to support myself, just as I support my friends. Trying to use a lot of patience for myself and refocus on the resting. 3 - trying to use only long-term dopamine. I am sure my brain should produce dopamine from itself, it is precious to me, and it is an ongoing process. I wish you good emotional feelings. And to me :)

so I'm disabled, and have found that I let things that cost me energy, but don't get a 'reward', like for instance preparing food for myself, slide quite often. I live on my own since a few months, and don't have anybody that cooks for me anymore (read: mom and dad). For a while it was my intenties to invest time to become a better cook, but it turns out I really don't have the energy for it. So now I just try to at least eat 2 simple meals a day, and I've found a new way to relax: jigsawpuzzles! I get so relaxed from them and it's a good way to mentally charge myself without physically exhausting myself as well. Great video, I loved what you did with the Chanel!

I have anxiety and depression and for the longest time my appetite went south and I wouldn't eat all day until 4pm. It got really bad and lost a lot of weight too quickly so I decided to make a biweekly meal plan to make sure I'm eating breakfast lunch and dinner every day.

I often struggle with self care. I let everything else in my life take priority over making sure I'm okay mentally. It's really touching to have someone I respect so much tell me, and others like me, to take care of myself. Thank you

I'm in a very isolated area right now in a rural place, and my friends all live in a city to the north, like 3 hours away. I don't get to be very social because of this, and as an ambivert, there is only a little of that that I can stand before I feel like I'm going to go crazy. To rectify this, I make a point every other weekend or so to actually drive all the way up there and spend some quality time with the people that I care about. To make this not so bad, I'm moving soon to be closer to them, and to me, that is self care. Taking into account my emotional needs, and actively seeking out solutions to isolation and loneliness problems.

Hey, all....i suspect..this is just what i need. 68 yr old lost soul here, spent my entire life from Early childhood on taking care of Others. Even my job was about taking care of others. Bad environment, but they never broke me..hubby was a paraplegic from hit & run when he was just 21 yrs old so he was total care & he suddenly died from a 'sinus infection'(or so the hospital claims) 5 yrs ago. .......and for the First time Ever..i was Alone...totally alone... Loving it, now...but..just drifting aimlessly..cos..i've no idea how to do this... i spent first 2 yrs after he passed..shut down, the shock of his loss threw me & nearly killed me..then just as suddenly, 2 yrs & a week later...one morning..the sun seemed just a little brighter & was coming in at just the right angle to hit the prisms & fill the room with rainbows...& i smelled the fresh brewed coffee for the first time .....& woke up out of the haze ....realization hit..i could do what **i wanted to do now...wow....! ..so..like the workaholic i am, i threw myself into restructuring the house, inside & out, flowers popping up randomly, everywhere.....then became deeply engrossed in things i never got to do before...& things i had to set aside for "someday"..like..all kinds of crafting..and decorating the house *inside* the way **i ** liked it......blissful..restful..whites...& violets..and daisies...strawberries..cardinals..lots of tree branches & sherry blossoms & dogwood....lots of copper & it's 99% shabby chic...& i am running out of materials & space....don't want it to look messy..just as one person described it.."WoW! what an Eclectic Wonderland, that would take days to see everything!"..she & anyone else that has visited fall in love with my house..& so am i....but..time passes....now it's done for the main part...but...i'm not. Because i don't socialize nor want to, Not Lonely in the slightest...i just want to ponder the meaning of life, while resting & healing in my sanctuary & let the world pass me by.....& it is, thankfully. ...my hair has grown out & looks wild....my nails are each a different length...Don't even have makeup not older than 5 yrs....& my wardrobe..has become the standard uniform of the boring housewife, a black jogging suit..sweat shirt & pants..and slippers......i am pretty much done mourning...time to change so...here i am....Teach Me

There are my self-care tips which help me to prevent burnout: 1. Set time aside for doing nothing and to be appreciate myself for that 2. To stay hydrated help to stay physically fit and positive 3. Do a bunch of push-ups in the morning 4. When I’m feeling down I’m doing more small breaks throughout the work day 5. Reading books help reduce the negative effects of stress

It's a great and helpful video, many thanks! Of course, I have self-care actions that can be good for everyone - proper nutrition, exercises, hydrating and enough sleep.... And there some tips that help me feel better physically and psychologically: 1. I don't read any news on the internet in the first 2 hourses before wake up and the last before I going to sleep. 2. Reguraly set the precious time aside for myself. I don't chating to anyone, just walking alone, cooking, reading a book or have a date on the cafee with myself. 3. Or vice versa - have a great time with my friends with a tasty food. 4. And finally my guilty pleasure! Sometimes I watch the silly tv-shows. I have to admit that when I have overworked week it's very help to recharged the batteries and not think about anything.

Walk alone on the fresh air, buy coffee, is one of the best tips. And even if I love my husband very much, when he went to his relatives and left me home alone it's filled sooo good! Nice rest, with favourite silent soundtracks

This was such a good video. I'm writing my final year thesis at the moment, and last week after saying I would do it for ages, I put together a playlist on youtube of videos that are guaranteed to make me laugh no matter what, and called it 'stress relief videos'. It came in useful this week when I was feeling overwhelmed, and by the end of it I felt much better

I needed this reminder -- thank you. I've got a couple different YT playlists for when I get stuck in a mental black hole and need to get out of my brain. Equal parts nostalgia, cute critters, and positive social interaction. Nothing profound, just things to get me back outside the event horizon. I've also recently discovered that drawing is a good way to short-circuit a black mood (and mix metaphors).

Catt S Oh lord, way too many to list. The Hank vs GMM "Shut Up And Dance" battle is a favorite, there's lots of GMOD prop hunt videos, a cat fail compilation or two, the "laugh without smiling" vlogbrothers one, hokey late-'90s (junior high) music videos... It's all over the map. More emotional triage than self-care, I guess. I think at least one of my bad-day playlists is set to public, though.

I've always struggled with taking care of myself. I never saw myself as "worthy" of taking the time to do something for myself. I also love knowing that the person who taught me history, chemistry, anatomy and physiology is able to tell me to take care of myself.

Exercise is my go to "get out of a funk" strategy. I also enjoy chocolate accompanied with KZbin, which usually transitions to a nap. I always feel better after these things!

I'm one of those people whose life goes out of whack when I don't get enough sleep. So taking care of myself means getting my necessary hours. I tell all those people around me how crucial it is to my health and overall mood. They now know that and have seen the negative effects that lack of sleep has on me (lol 😅) so they are always encouraging of this act of self care.

One thing I do on tough days is making a list of all the self-care things I need to do that day. If it's a really bad day, that includes eating :) I put it with my regular to-do list so I remember to actually do them.

For nearly two and a half year, I have had a non-negotiable introvert time set aside each Wednesday, where I read a book in the bath and have a beverage. Sometimes I am travelling and don't have access to a tub, in which case I carry out the tradition pool side or in the middle of the woods, but I have not missed a Wednesday (and post it to my Instagram as and way of keeping accountable to myself).

I second the Warm and Fuzzy File. I usually surround myself with the things that make me happy but productive. Instead of sitting down to watch a video, I'll leave it playing in the background while I do my work. Sometimes when I use headphones, I feel locked in and don't usually wear them to keep focused; the same goes for my phone (when it's on, I'll leave it face down to prevent distraction or I'll leave it out of sight but near me if I need it). Great self-care guide!

Yes! Love this. 🙌 Self-care is my JAM! I coach a lot of clients through developing and prioritizing their self-care routines and the main thing I see is that there is a vicious cycle in losing energy. Just like anything else, it gains momentum and can feel impossible to do what will help us feel better - even if we WANT to. It's important to remember that: A) It doesn’t have to be long and involved. It just has to be healthy. B) It doesn’t have to look like we’re told self-care looks. It just has to leave us feeling a bit better than when we started. C) There are plenty of options. We have to focus on doing the things that’ll help you move the needle - even just a little bit. I love the warm and fuzzy file idea!

Of course everyone is different but for me it really helps to exercise when I go from professional to private after work. To process and accept the things that happen at work I try to get an hour of exercise like running or dancing afterwards. My work is, while intense, also really rewarding. I'm a social worker and it's a privilege and a form of self care to help others as a profession. I feel so good when I see others making progress and getting back on their feet.

What I've noticed from heavy periods of stress where I have at times been close to a burnout is that when you start to have serious problems with sleeping and not being able to think of anything else than the things that are causing your stress then it is really time to do something. At least warnings signs for are no being able to relax your mind and focus on other things apart from the things that make you stressed, dreaming about the things that make you stressed and waking up in the middle of the night feeling like you are not allowed to fall asleep until you have solved and imaginary problem you brain has come up with during sleep. Several strikes of anxiety is also a warning sign. What I have found helps a lot for me is be aware of where my stress levels are at, talk about what makes me stressed and have someone reflect when and why you might be feeling that way. Take time off and let yourself not worry and the stress and do other stuff, force you to think of other things than what's making you stressed. Reading a book and having a quiet time for myself, taking a walk and prioritize your mental and physical health.

What a great video! Great job Hank (and Michael for writing the script)! I loved all the personal examples that Hank gave for what works for him, but also that you acknowledged that what works for some may not work for all. And lastly, I love the catchphrase! Ever since Vanessa from BrainCraft used it I've always thought "it's the adult thing to do" is the perfect catchphrase for this channel!

The thing I do to keep myself gong is to do one "decadent" thing for myself every. single. day. Now this does not mean going out to eat every day or buying a donut or spending all my money at the mall (though I can do those once in a while) but for me it's more like giving my self permission to take a nap, take an hour to read a book, make a really nice bubble bath for myself, go see a movie (or rent one), take an hour out of my day to paint. It's these little things that help me feel taken care of and help me prevent burn out.

Sitting in, watching netflix or youtube, rummaging around imgur; the lack of anything of real substance seems to impact way more than just my mental health. I'll go out of my way to work on a project for at least 30 minutes each day. Helps me feel productive, (even if I'm really not). Which in-turn helps me not feel so depressed, just because of that feeling of productivity. Making some art, a web site, write a blog, make some chainmaille, clean up/regrease the bicycle, sharpen the kitchen cutlery.

Wow, I am really glad I found this video. I was searching self-care on the tube, and here I am. I've seen the chemistry crash course videos, which helped me a lot. I'm in my 30s, just going back to school, majoring in biochem, and working full-time in food service still. I have some major mental health issues, too. Self-care wasn't even in my vocabulary a year ago. Thanks so much for making an informative and easy-to-watch video. Love your work, keep it up and heartfelt congrats on the baby.

Hi, there. Here's my self-care list of tips. When I'm feeling down I'm eating sweets, a lot of sweets! When I'm eating sweets, I recognise that I need to recharge my batteries, so I visit women's phsycology club with warm atmosphere. I like to switch off and take time out from my work before the need strikes, for ex, I do yoga with breathing deeply by the diaphragm. Sometimes I don't notice warning signs and I start to yell at my family, and in that case it takes me to set time aside for yourself to being face-to face, or just sleeping. New way to prevent burnout is drawing neirographics. Also communicating with my kids: son and niece is vital piece of ongoing process that shows me careless, kind, happy moment of my life. There I can be a warm lovely woman with smile. Nothing beats cuddling with them!

I'm a mom and running is a big part of my self care. It's one of the only times I am by myself all day. I also try to meditate just for five minutes in the middle of the day and journal my thoughts-usually at lunch time. I make my coffee the way I like in the morning and to me that is also self-indulgent. A big red flag that I need more self care is that I start comparing myself to others and feeling terrible about myself in general. I start eating less and I fall behind on basic chores in the house. I get more short tempered with my son and partner. When that happens I like to visit body positive blogs (I used to have an eating disorder) and running blogs.

The best self care method I've found is just telling myself it's okay not to think so much, or that I'll never figure out everything. If I don't do this, I end up in thought spirals or hyper focus that go on endlessly and ruin my overall mood. My confidence in this belief in day to day life almost exclusively diticates how good i feel. I'm not sure if that's unhealthy, but I've pretty much accepted it as nesscary. I wouldn't say my mood is poor all the time, more like just tired, lmao.

For me self-care consists of 5 big plates: having an admiring job, a usual good sleeping (for 8-10 hours), healthy food and hydration, regular physical activity and mental rest. When I worked at annoying job - I hated everything on it and out of it! When I forgot eating healthy or drink enough water - I haven't any energy in every ongoing process throughout the workday. When I slept less than 7-8 hours - my brain can't be productive and create interesting through the day. When I'm not having any regular sports activity (2-3 times per week) - my body kills myself for it. And when I can't find any time to have a mental rest during the day - I feel so overwhelmed with work in the end of the week. Summing up all my thoughts, I want to say Thanks for your video, it was a good reminder that we need to recognize the warning signs of being overwhelmed with work and usually recharge our batteries in our own perfect way.

I gravitate towards caring for my plants. I live in a small space, but it helps that I have the greenery around me. It needs my care and attention but if I don't care for it properly, or something out of control happens, it's not totally devastating if it croaks. Rather than if I had a pet to care for, which becomes a daily expense. And plants DO respond to whether they are ignored, have a positive atmosphere, or are treated negatively. So, there's also the satisfaction of them flourishing when you are behaving kindly.

Great vid - my personal notes: A Self-Care Action Plan by Hank Green Self-Care is extremely important. It will ultimately allow me to be more productive. It will also prevent me from mental breakdowns and losing my shit. This means suicide, giving up on goals/clients/society. The point of everything is happiness and contribution and the only way I can ever be happy is if I allow myself to be happy. Only when I am happy/energetic/positive, can I be productive, and contribute to society effectively. As hank says, “it is okay to take care of myself”. Self-care is not a reward that I earn. It is me being an adult taking responsibility for my own sanity. It is smart AND WISE to take care of myself.

If I get irritated quickly about something that I usually wouldn't, I know that's a sign that I'm slipping. I'm a podcast junkie, so, taking some time to just give my full attention to a fun podcast helps me step outside my stresses/problems for a bit. This doesn't help for really big things, but for smaller things, the pause is enough that when I come back to myself, the issue is not there anymore.

I love that you pointed out to have different strategies based on the situation. I was a country kid but now live in the city. I will take time to go home and walk through the forest, look up at the stars, listen for the wolves. Other times? I call my best friend and say "I need to be an a__hole and I need you to not judge me." Some days I meditate, listen to a podcast, drop in on a yoga class.... I like to leave my self care unregimented so that I can change it up for what I need at that time. And if my "go with the flow" way isn't working, I book an apt with my therapist and he reminds me to "be safe in my own hands". It seemed weird when he first said it. I raised an eyebrow at him and worried that seeing him was a mistake. With time, though, it clicked. And it's really what opened the door for me to go from crisis level (read: risking a stay in a ward) to being the person people call "chill" and "calm". Seriously.

I’ve realized over the past couple years that between depression and a childhood where I was… kind of neglected, I just really don’t have a good foundation for self care. Nobody ever made me clean my room, nobody paid attention to what I ate, nobody brushed my hair or made sure I drank water, and so I never really learned to do those things for myself. And that’s sad, sure, but I want my life to be better, so I have to be the person who teaches myself those things now. And so I wills

I started a bullet journal/daily target list with stuff like going to bed by a set time, finishing physio by a set time, washing my hair, doing some exercise, going outside. I've set it to count up how many points I got and what % of that day's points I got, plus an average % for the week. If I got a low score for a couple of days I can see what needs to be done and do it. I now automatically brush my hair every day because I got a point for it.

Great channel 😊 I also tend to browse sites that are NOT THAT interesting when I should really be doing something else, so learning that this might be an indicator for stress and not just procrastinating (which stresses me even more since I then feel bad for doing it) might help me cope with it better 🙂

I do laundry when I'm stressed. I have a hand washer and clothesline, so it is a little more effort, but it makes me feel really good when I'm done cuz I saved on electricity and didn't mope around all day.

A lot of my self-care is in the form of preventative actions, namely not isolating myself, and eating at least decently well. That tends to help keep the depression away, when I feel myself slipping towards there I can generally think back and one of them will be there.

Journaling is something I definitely do. I also find that sometimes it helps to just kind-of write aimlessly. As a student, I spend a lot of my day sitting at a computer writing papers, doing research, and the like. Because the writing and stuff I have to do for school so often needs to be professional and well-structured, I occasionally need to set time aside to write something else. For me, at least, since I get tired of sitting in front of a computer to write, I use an old manual typewriter I have to just write about anything. It has no purpose, and I'm not trying to say anything, but the physical and mental process of writing things can be very relaxing, and the fact it's on something that isn't a computer makes it feel different and special. Of course, not everybody has a typewriter, but I sometimes think that writing things that aren't really about anything-not even accounts of your day-and doing it in a slightly different way from how you normally work can be really helpful. I also draw, which can help a lot too.

I have to say that the regenerated HtA is much better than the old version. I always thought that 2 hosts on screen at once was a little much and this format is much better. I also like how each video features a single topic, as opposed to the list format of the previous incarnation. It's like the channel has grown up, almost :P Keep up the good work!

Just taking 5 to 10 minutes of your morning time to ground and get your head straight in the morning. Before you start your day. , A quick stress relieving meditation is one of the great ways to prepare you for the coming could be challenge's of the day or just regular routine. It's just something to clear your head 🗣️ and emotions off being somewhere you don't want them to be. Sef preservation is key 🗝️🔐

I am disabled and have mental health issues. I have started to take time out of my day to physically look after myself, read a little and watch funny videos on youtube. It is starting to help me cope.

I like listening to music while coloring or just simply having my eyes closed listening to music. depending on how I feel, my music changes. helpful to have different playlists depending on how they make you feel that way you can listen to what you need or want.

I used to say "I'm too busy to take a nap" a lot, but recently I've been learning that if I carve out time for a short nap after I come home from work or school, I can wake up later and have more energy to get stuff done efficiently instead of dragging myself through the rest of the day. Self-care is a time-saver in the long run!

4 years late, but I'm huge on self-care. I meditate daily. I'm big on relaxation and use scented candles as well as essential oils. I use many different grooming products. I drink calming herb tisanes, teas and concoctions. I'm all about me.
