Nice quick and easy chucks. I made similar chucks but instead of using face plates, I recessed 1" by 8TPI nuts into the base plate. I drilled a hole just big enough to force the hex nut in and epoxied it around the edges to achieve air tight fit. Cheaper than using face plates and they work fine. I add a bit of Teflon tape when I thread them on the spindle for good measure. I usually pull 25-28 inches of Hg here in NJ.

I believe the system Carl uses is a venturi-style system that utilizes compressed air. If you have an air compressor that can keep up, they work fine, but small compressors (e.g. pancake-style) can't maintain sufficient air pressure and are constantly cycling.

Great ideas. The only thing I would change would be to use wooden tapped faceplates instead of metal. Since I have the Beall tap, very cheap to have whatever faceplate I need. Thanks

Thanks Carl nice work, i was wanted to make a few myself. Anyone wanting a real nice cheap vac system should look up the Frugal Vac Chuck.guy. He has the best deal i have ever seen on real deal pumps and all the fixings. Also dave uses a real pump to do all that turning not a venturi system. I wouldnt recommend doing green turning on a venturi system.

Hi Carl, thanks for all your great videos. I was given the older hold fast model (black - V810R), and I bought the hold fast adapter. I’ve got it all set up, and when I put my finger over the lamp rod sticking out of my headstock it goes up to - 20Hg. But I can’t get it to get any suction without putting. My finger directly over the end of the lamp rod. I built a chuck following this video, but no suction. For the life of me I can’t figure out what’s going on. I used silicone. It doesn’t even go up a little, there is NO suction without putting my finger over the lamp rod. Any idea what could be happening / where / how I could be loosing suction?

After you put the screw in and you removed them, you can grind of the points before you drive them back in so they will not stick out
@bgarnreiter894 жыл бұрын
Hi sir! I know this is from forever ago, but I was following these steps and I believe I made a great chuck! Unfortunately I could never get above 3hg, do you know how powerful of a compressor you were using? Mine is at 2.6 CFM at 90, and is supposedly powerful enough, but I am really struggling. Thank you in advance for any tips!
@CarlJacobson4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brandon, there must be an air leak somewhere, the compressor is plenty big enough. It could even be a crack in the wood.

Why not use shorter screws? Then you don't have to cut the ends off the screws. If you use your silicone cement to stick the foam to the ring, you won't need to saw off the textured surface. Silicone is very good at making airtight seals that fill small gaps. Also, the vacuum will probably compress the foam so there are no air leaks anyway.
@CarlJacobson7 жыл бұрын
I didn't have shorter screws on hand, and the thinner the foam is the less vibration you'll get.
