This was filmed in Vancouver. I was at this concert: it was an amazing concert. Love this album; every song is a worthy listen to. He used global musicians, one of the first big acts that would do this, and they played fantastic.

Sort of correct. The official concert release of the Serious Moonlight Tour was filmed in Vancouver. This is the official single release for Modern Love which was filmed in Philadelphia on July 20, 1983. I was at that show. My first ever concert. In actuality, the director must have cut in some footage from some of the other three Philly shows because no balloons were dropped the night I saw the concert which was the third of four nights. Show three and four were added shows. I had no idea the video was recorded in Philly the first time I saw it but I sure do remember the roses being thrown to David and him throwing the bunch back into the audience. The show was magical for me having been a fan of David's for ten years at that point. BTW ... your Vancouver show was amazing too. I listen to that show often when I'm driving in my car. How lucky were we to be able to see David perform? Love on ya!

Bowie had never been considered a mainstream artist till his "Let's Dance" song / album was released & became a global hit. It pushed him into new territory that he was uncomfortable with & according to him he "lost his way" from an artistic perspective. Looking back, he was not happy with the next 2 albums he released & in around 89-90 he reinvented himself again by forming a new band called "Tin Machine" with a totally different look & sound. It allowed him to find his creativity & enthusiasm for his craft again - a reboot, of sorts. Even though "Tin Machine" was not really considered a success, I can see how it rejuvenated him as he entered the 90's. I think a great deal of his 90's work is overlooked, plenty of great stuff there, IMHO!

I can remember someone interviewing Bowie but the final question was all sombre and seriously asking "What would You like to be remembered for?' OH HOW I LOVE THIS MAN! David came from a family of severe mental illness.. Hense his alter Ego's in his career. He had three he hid behind you could say. Ziggy Stardust.. Alladin Sane and The Thin White Duke. The illness in his family terrified him. He spoke of it often in the early days. Listen to the song "CHANGES" it's biographical... When he was older and more mature as in this video. He was "David Bowie" A very smart..talented..wonderful man. Who has touched my life in so many ways. Rest Peacefully Starman⭐

@@HarriBestReactions I know everything about him. I am huge fan of his. His older brother committed suicide in a sanitarium. When David was found he was uncomfortable being himself on stage. Being in character was much easier for him. He lost himself between him and Ziggy Stardust.. So he killed off Ziggy and and another character was born. He was a genius.

Right on both points : it's from "Let's dance" and it was a wordlwide hit... just as it was intended to be ! By 1983, Bowie was a bit tired of being considered "a marginal, avant-garde artist" and decided to show the world he could take mainstream by the jugular. And boy, did he do it ! "Let's dance" was a phenomenal success, attracting millions to the Bowie constellation (... and putting him in a sad situation : he was expected to produce the same kind of music afterwards, while he was already tired of this, and had already set his mind into something else... It would take 7 years for him to overcome this "success" and go back to avant-garde and experimentation again). Oh, and if you want my opinion about the song itself : I bloody love it !!!!!

You are not too far off. One night Bowie met Nile Rodgers in a night club in NYC and they start talking. Bowie asked Nile if he would like to produce his next album. Nile was a little down on his luck at the time, and jumped at the chance. Nile asked Bowie what kind of sound he was looking for, and Bowie told him he wanted a hit album. Enough with critical acclaim, Bowie wanted hits. Nile delivered.

Not many people know (or at least realise) that Nile Rogers also had a hand in one of Duran Duran’s biggest hits: “The Reflex”. That single was an edit by Nile Rogers. In 1986 Rogers went on to produce then trio Duran Duran’s album ‘Notorious’.

Fun fact: for his album "Scary Monsters," David made some "short films" of some of the songs on the album, to be shown in clubs, mostly in New York. In 1980. MTV, the music television channel, debuted in 1981. In New York. Do the math. Oh, and for this album, a key point is that he did the film "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" before making this album. He showed up at the location where they were going to be shooting early, and brought along a bunch of 45s of old time rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and so on. And that's what he listened to before and during filming, then met Niles Rodgers. As Paul Harvey would say, "And now you know the rest . . . Of the story."

What I found interesting, having seen this tour in Toronto, was how well the entire vibe was captured in this video. It was a long show with so many peaks, no valleys, guitars set on stun, riffing horn section, thunderous drums, every singer and musician onstage actively engaged in being the star of the night, creating memories. I saw a couple of his tours before this but during this period he was thoroughly 100% the gold standard of mainstream with no apologies.

I've read elsewhere that Bowie had been REALLY unhappy with his management for a while, so he'd only given them his strangest, most experimental stuff. As soon as he was shot of those folks, he indulged in all his poppier, more energetic impulses when he cut this song and the rest of the album Let's Dance.

It's a shame that the U.S. mostly ignored Bowie throughout his early creative 70's period with only three top 15 hits...Space Oddity, Fame, and Golden Years. Even the classic Under Pressure with Queen only hit #29 on U.S. charts in 1981. The Let's Dance album in 1983 had three big hits: Let's Dance, China Girl, and Modern Love. So, it showed that if he wanted he could have big commercial success there. Also, he never won a Grammy award until after his death...which is a ridiculous slight.

@@HarriBestReactions The first part of that statement can be said of almost any Bowie album listened to in chronological sequence except for maybe The Buddha of Suburbia (written for a TV series) where he seemed to deliberately revisit several past styles. It seemed to me he generally took 2 albums to fully explore a particular style before moving on to something completely different. Ending his Ziggy phase caused national panic in my generation here in the UK before we realised we were dealing with a chameleon and needn't have worried. The second part is also true. Nile Rogers brought magic and sophistication to everything he touched; Chic, Sister Sledge and many other individual collaborations.

That's a great rule Harri and always works for me. Bowie had no belief system, I don't think.
