One of the biggest problems with this is that for one character it goes, "25% defense growth? Terrible." then for another character "25% defense growth? Amazing!"

I feel like there is a truth to that, but it comes down a lot more to bases than growths. Like, take Kyle; his base Defense is 9 and he has a growth of 25%. It starts good, and it picks up a point every now and then so it can stay good. But then you have someone like Eirika, who has a Defense of 3 and a growth of 30%. She actively relies on her growth, so even though it's actually a little higher than Kyle, she tends to have problems because she NEEDS her Defense growth in a way that Kyle doesn't.

@@OmegaCKL Oh, yes indeed. Honestly, I suspect the real culprit is that he's looking at their 20/20 stats so he can use them in the postgame. So he looks at a character with bad 20/20 defense and goes "ah, it's that they have a bad growth" and he looks at a character with good 20/20 defense and goes "ah, they have a good growth." Even though they have the same friggin' growth; it's just that he's ignoring that one has a base six points higher than the other.

Dude, that entire section is pure fucking idiocy. Lancereaver (scored 89, less than a Steel Blade): Okay, so if you face a lance user, your damage will increase and hit increase. That is why the weapon isn't that useful by itself. Use the weaker weapons for its intended purposes. Steel Sword: Steels aren't a hot choice for combat. I would prefer the iron sword, but like all steels, I like breaking random destructibles with them. Iron Axe: Reliable weapon for sure. I almost never use the other axes because the iron axe is so good. Iron axe = best overall weapon. The "objective" number system doesn't even make any math sense. Why is durability multiplying damage, rather than the weapon's overall value? He doesn't make the reviews consistent with the scores, for example, the Iron Sword above is a 200 weapon. Killer Sword is a 247, but its review says: "Crazy good weapon again right? The killing edge has the overkill problem, the damage is not displaced efficiently." Pretending killing units too much is a problem for a minute, if h found the resultant scores to be inaccurate to the utility of particular weapon's, why didn't he rethink the formula!?! Wasn't measuring the utility "objectively" the entire fucking point!?! Every other weapon review he mentions some property of the weapon his formula totally ignores!

So I open this "guide" out of curiousity and the first thing I see after scrolling randomly is Bolting, which apparently has the "weapon power" of -60 (yes, negative sixty). EDIT: Some other random tidbits, this is too good. - The author "developed the WP system to objectively compare weapons". A good chunk of these descriptions is him trying to explain why these scores are, in fact, misleading. - He complains about Shamshir, Killing edge, Killer Axe etc. "wasting damage" because they tend to overkill on crit. Forget "experience stealing", this guy's loss aversion is on another level. - Iron blade's damage is "unbelievably high" (9), so it's very good. Lancereaver (also 9 might) is meh, because it just grants some bonuses against lance users, dude. - He claims that there's only one rapier in the game. - High weight of a weapon can apparently be mitigated by a high weapon rank. He seems to know about constitution, so I have no idea how he came to this conclusion. - Iron lance is the best lance and all the others are just gimmicks and shenanigans. Yes, really. - The best brave weapon is Brave bow. - Most silver weapons are worse than iron ones. Flux is pwnage incarnate and is somehow more powerful than Fenrir (and no, not because it can double, he doesn't mention anything about its weight). - Ivaldi is not that good at attacking because it... grants a bonus to defense. 17 might and 10 weight btw. - Finally, the author read the description to Luna (that it ignores Res)... and still couldn't figure out how its damage is calculated.

This formula creates so many weird situations. One example is that while the steel sword currently has a lower WP than the wyrmslayer, if it had as little as 5 extra durability, it would then be 34 points higher than the wyrmslayer.

I remember the very first playthrough I did of Sacred Stones that attempted to keep everyone alive, I remember promoting every single cavalier in the game (including Amelia) to Paladin. Why? I feel like I was marginally better at this game when I played it the first time. I soft ironmanned it, since I didn't think to reset, assumed Seth was so good because he was supposed to fight while carrying Erika, and Lute and Vanessa were my MVP. Somehow, a dumb kid who didn't think to reset got mileage out of Lute and Vanessa, but lost Gilliam and Garcia.

To be fair, for a first time player Gilliam and Garcia give off an image that they should be frontline units, and it can be easy to overestimate their ability to take hits, whereas Lute and Vanessa appear rather frail, giving an impression that you need to use them more carefully.

Okay, literally just over a minute in but I think I can explain why we do Dates differently here. Or at least in the area I am from. In Europe, and maybe some of the US, the logic of 12/01/2020 makes more sense since you would normally say it in that order (12th of January, 2020) Here we say it the other way around more often than not. I mean, it's kind of the entire point to her character, even. She's stated in-story to be a noble who's never seen active combat but took fencing lessons with her brother, and that's basically how she shakes out statwise. She's meant as a zero-to-hero type to contrast with Ephiram's experienced out-of-the-box asskicking. Funnily, her overall statline and utility is near-identical to Lyn (albeit with a worse personal weapon and a better promotion and legendary weapon), but she doesn't get five maps fighting axe bandits with 14 displayed hit, so people aren't as fooled by it.

@@misterbadguy7325 It's super easy to compare the sword locked GBA infantry Lords, and I feel like Lyn bias shows because Eirika and Eliwood are leagues better than her upon promotion, and at least Roy gets the Binding Blade if nothing else. Now if Lyn promoted into a nomad like her CYL counterpart in FEH, then she'd be a lot better but E or D rank bows ain't great either that late into the game when Rath already exists and can use silver and brave bows on a mount many chapters earlier.

@@l.n.3372 It's another thing that varies on if you play Lyn Mode. Training Rath in Lyn Mode isn't something most people do, between his archery focus and the fact that everyone else needs the XP more than him. So a lot of people finish Lyn Mode with Rath barely above his base, and he ends up being downright mediocre when he rejoins. But if you don't play Lyn Mode, he shows up with a higher level and weapon rank upon rejoining, including being able to use the Brave Bow, which base Lyn Mode Rath can't do.

I remember when I was starting out Fire Emblem. I thought the Myrmidons were better than Cavaliers because guides like this one (but not this one) implied as much. I personally preferred Cavaliers because they had pretty good control over the weapon triangle pre-promote, balanced stats making them fairly reliable (most, having enough speed to double anything that isnt a pegasus or myrmidon), and that they werent at a constant weapon triangle disadvantage against common enemy types. Because I used both Marcus and Seth, and that my army was heavily composed of cavaliers and fliers, I that I was playing poorly, because my ideal unit selection, rather went against what was commonly recommended at the time. Of course, I did play poorly, but my unit selection was NOT my problem.

Hate to inject a dash of seriousness to this - but this is a nice reminder for players who came into the series with Awakening, Fates/ 3 Houses about what new players (now-vets) experienced when Sacred Stones first came to the west in the mid 2000's. The first FE experience for myself and many others was playing a game in FE8 that is considered one of the easiest FE games in the series - a game that instilled some poor habits into new players like under-appreciating bases stats, starting weapon ranks, aid, movement, canto, etc. in order to beat the game on the highest difficulty compared to players who came into the series with harder games like Conquest Lunatic, SD H5, & NM LR. In a game that incentivized arena abuse, tower abuse, and ruins abuse, many of us believed that units should be judged on their growths & remaining levels to grow (since buying up stat boosters for your entire army was almost considered meta. FE KZbin channels & a burgeoning sub reddit scene hadn't quite taken off at the time (nor had the series' popularity in general) - so access to good helpful information about how to improve as a player did not seem as readily available / understandable to many of us. Like there are n00bs now, there were also n00bs back then... We just got a little more bald since then (see: Mangs).

One can say that getting your summoners to that point is too hard/not worth it, but that is not identical to saying that the phantoms are necessarily useless at anything but dying.

The likert scale isn't really meant to be combined the way you do with ross, which might explain some of the wonky ratings. If you combine Vanessa's rating with Moulder's it basically becomes a 5. a unit's rating is measured by how far it is from 5, with 5 being an average unit with average stats, growths, utility, and versatility
