Overall tour with build details on my 12 ft 8 in wide steel framed cedar gate. Then we head over my friend Tyler's house and weld up a similar one that is split gate design. I know a lot of people will see this and say "well I don't have a welder", but mig welders are super cheap these days and it's very easy to weld mild steel. So stop by your local Harbor Freight and pick one up. You won't regret it.

The tension cable makes the install perfect, people forget the movement comes from the post bending this amplifies the drop in the gate by balancing the load you remove the droop, superb bit of simple engineering

For sure. While I have not use the tension cable yet, who knows maybe 10 years from now it will come in handy! Better safe than sorry. If I could go back I probably would have used a 6 inch post, but I didn't want to decrease the width of the driveway

SS40 seems to be a fencing specific product. Pipe schedules are ASME standards for pipe sizing. Sch 40 is standard weight pipe (wall thickness). A 4” sch 40 pipe will be ~4” ID, and 4 1/2” OD.

You could always half-lap the picket edges to eliminate the gaps. Just enough to allow them to slide across for expansion and contraction. Or it might be possible to cut a kerf-sized slot to insert thin strips of metal or FRP to provide privacy and perhaps additional stability for pickets that have a tendency to warp out of alignment. A half-lap would help there too but only if the warp is toward the lap, meanwhile a strip would probably need to be painted to blend. Just remember to reapply anti-seize on the fasteners to prevent dissimilar metal galvanic corrosion. I have a crazy idea to install lightweight cedar pickets onto an aluminum frame and rather than swinging inward or outward, use garage door hardware to slide it upward into a carport. Garage doors are segmented into panels to pass the track radius but I’d just use the top and bottom of the assembly to achieve the same purpose. I still have to determine how much weight a torsion spring can handle.

Awesome build, and I am using this to build a double swinging gate spanning 17'... Couple of questions, 1) what did you use to paint the galvanized posts and sleeves??? That black color looks so much better than just regular galvanized!!! and 2) Did you use wafer head stainless steel self-tapping screws??? (I tried the amazon links, and they don't work for me, sorry)... Thanks again, will shoot you pics of mine after complete in a couple of weeks... Roger V

Thanks. I used semi-gloss rustoleum brush on paint. And cleaned the galvanized posts with acetone first. It will tend to peel as it gets older though in areas. But it's easy to touch up. Hard to get paint to stick to galvanized.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 2 жыл бұрын
And yes I used self-tapping steel screws. Actually ended up replacing them with stainless screws later down the line though to match the rest of my fence. Dabbed a little grease on each one also to help from the hole rusting out in the future. Good luck on your build!

Too bad the fence at 4:08 was put in backward. Always polite to put in a fence with the outside facing your neighbor, so they don't have to look at the back side.
@davez2989
@davez2989 2 жыл бұрын
I have to ask WHY? When did this become a thing? If the neighbor wants a good side they can build their own fence. Why is the good side supposed to go to your neighbor? Why can' you be the neighbor? Especially if they aren't paying for any of it, and or building it with you. In my opinion you put the good side the direction that makes you the happiest. There are lots of ways to make a fence nice looking as well on both side.
