That was an emotional trip down memory lane, James. I was born and brought up in Wakefield, and lived in Durkar and Sandal, so many of the places you visited were very familiar to me. My dad used to have a couple of trailers at Newmillerdam, and I spent many a summer selling ice cream there in the school holidays. Can you remember Lumb's Ice Cream? My parents have since passed away (and their ashes were scattered there), but when I visited my mum's flat in Durkar, Kingfisher was my go to place for Fish & Chips, and I still miss it sometimes when I fancy a change from Thai food It's a pity you were a bit underwhelmed on your visit. Thanks for the memories, I seem to be watching you every day at the moment catching up on your back catalogue. Great stuff!

Pugneys fills me with great sadness now. I windsurfed as a member there for 10 years… have seen it bustling with a multitude of water craft, people watching, asking, renting, learning, thriving. Was a real heartbeat of a community, a diamond. Then austerity, cuts, and a few quid saved by government. Likely the same amount x 10 gone into addressing the community issues that start to arise as a result of the centre all but closing (operations today are a shadow of what they were pre 2016). While it may still be a nice walk, and picnic spot… trust me it’s a shadow of its former self😢.

Wakefield doesn't like that bad tbh the shopping centre and streets look a lot cleaner than Doncaster ! I've been to both Country Parks with my dogs as my daughter lives in Royston and its not too far. I’m from Wakefield (Ossett) and unfortunately wakey has gone down hill fast like Most towns. The Ridings has new owners now and they’re regenerating it to fill the shops back up and return it back to how it was when built in the 80’s so fingers crossed it’ll work and have a positive knock on effect for wakey and revive it a bit more. Loving the town tours by the way… 😁

Unfortunately, you will soon be overrun by the people that you are not even allowed to mention in a negative way without being banned from posting on any platform. You will most likely be arrested and put in prison if you speak against them. That's why I moved as far south as I could from my birthplace of Yorkshire 27 years ago. Such a shame our country has surrendered to this, like many other European countries. Sweden comes to mind to me personally. Can you even believe Sweden has fallen? Remember Abba? No more blonde haired and blue eyed stars again, only dark skins, beards and women wearing bin bags. Sorry for the rant, it just upsets me that this country has gone to the dogs.

Where that boggy path split, if you'd have gone left you'd have come to the castle car park and avoided the field! Spent hours round Pugneys and Newmiller with the dog in lockdown. Hi James, Great video and so weird for me as a resident of Sandal. We have a lot of great outdoor and community spaces on our doorstep. You can practically get Green space wherever you go in Wakefield. We are very well connected with public footpaths, the canal towpath and the trans pennine trail if walking and cycling are your thing. It's actually very good for outdoor life. The suburbs are actually quite expensive, especially Sandal/Newmillerdam. I think prices have increased substantially since Covid. I believe this is down to the close(ish) proximity to London (2 hrs on the train) and multiple private schools (if that's your thing). Next time you visit the castle make sure you go to the Cafe as the food is excellent. Very old school and homemade. Next to the Hepworth is Tileyard North which is an events space and workplace. It's the regeneration of the entire Mill area and is an exciting development for the area. There's a gin bar and restaurant too. Would have been worth a visit for you as it's a huge part of Wakefield moving forward. You're right in that the town centre does need work (most do) but I believe this is a high retail shop to housing ratio problem. The town centres have been incredibly slow to adapt to online retail and modern living and now you have a situation of too many retail establishments. The tide needs to turn and more housing needs to take the place of all the retail units. Thanks again for the feature.

And I worked at Wakefield college so I was involved in those graduation ceremonies at the cathedral for a long time. When I joined the Prison Service in the late 70's I was sent to the training school at Wakefield, (not the Prison), it was one of two dedicated training schools, Wakefield which looked like a modern secondary school of the time for twelve weeks, or Leyhill Manor. It was said Wakefield produced "screws", while Leyhill produced "officers and gentlemen", I was quite happy to be a "screw". I believe neither training school exists any more, a shame we were well trained.

Leyhill Open Prison is not far from my wife's family home in a small town in south Gloucestershire . . . come off the M5 Jn 14, turn left B4509 ( & left again Tortworth Road to Leyhill Prison ) on the country way to the town, after which J.K.Rowling, Author, ( who lived in Thornbury ) apparently named this family because she had a dislike for D******, thereby missing out the A38 ! My wife ( loves watching Crime Programmes etc. ) & I have both watched the television series on C4 or C5 about Britain's notorious prisons . . . . . . I attended the Induction Tests for becoming a Modern ( AFTER requirement for 5 G.C.E. "O" Levels was dropped under H.M. Civil Service ) Prison Service Prison Officer at H.M. I wonder if they've done any ground penetrating radar in that field. Loved seeing that area as I have read some on the War of the Roses. What a lovely chapel on the bridge, I wonder what it sounds like inside, can you hear the river? When you mentioned streaking it brought back memories of the first streaker I saw which was at my community college. He was running naked carrying an open umbrella and jumped on the hood of a car and then off he went. Thanks for the visit to the Coal Mine and the fish and chips review. Well done James - not much dry humour but, I/most of us, got it! Perhaps the fish was detached from the batter because it was a 'small' one which obviously moves less quichly than the stadard size and so was 'kept hot' for quite a while - you didn't say whether or not the orders were fried on request... I park up the castle or on the rd. and walk down to pugneys and bk. the muddy field lovely in summer. Used to like stainbrough castle gardens ( northern college ) the national trust took over and now you have to pay. I prefer to walk the woods at newmillerdam. Eagerly awaiting van makeover 😊

That section with you and the fish in the car with the grey skies motivates me to try harder and make a better life for myself.

That boat yard james a gentleman called Bruce owns it really nice guy. He reconditions old narrow boats & barges too and makes them from scratch too. When there just an irion shell. Cant beat Wakefield. I was born in Horbury old historic town.

I agree James. It is so sad about town centres. Our council has made the rates so high that only betting shops, food outlets and hair/barber shops can earn money. On camera, those mushy peas looked like they had colouring in them! Looking forward to a bit of sun and bet you are too!! Cheers 😊

Yes, the peas looked very strange. Im ready for some sunshine :-)

Great video this. Liked the history, scenery, walk around and the architecture. We are at a time of life now, where quality is better than quantity. Less food but better food. Honest fish and chip review. Bill catches our fish and I cook the home grown organic chips. ❤🇦🇺
