A video essay I saw on the Saw sequels once speculated each one was meant to have a theme - Saw 3 is about forgiveness, Saw 5 is about teamwork, and Saw 4 is about how you SHOULD NEVER GO THROUGH AN UNSECURED DOOR EVER! That made me really laugh, and I'm glad to see another video essay that appreciates it.

There's a good series called Foot The Bill that's been costing all the traps in the Saw movies, and their explanation for Jigsaw kinda makes sense - i.e. that John Kramer spent *wayyyy* too much money on that first trap, and had to start dialling it back after that, so that's why the next few traps are just, like, Guy In Room.

1:46:15 Fun fact: they actually _physically filmed_ that transition. That isn't edited in post; they literally ran the camera from one set piece to another like that and timed the smash/the detective walking in. If you look up 'Darren's Video Diary Saw IV' and skip to around the 10:20 mark you can see the BTS footage of how they did it. These movies are genuinely so creative, stylistically cool and well made, I don't care what anyone has to say about them being 'cringe'.

I haven't seen this vid yet, just popped up on my feed- However, I like the messy Soap Opera that is Saw (Came for the Gore, stayed for the Lore) But what annoys me is when people bash John Kramer for his line about not being a murderer. Yes, he is. But HE doesn't believe it. Imagine watching MacBeth, and Lady MacBeth keeps washing her hands and saying "Out damn spot, out!" Only for someone to go "BUT THERE'S NOTHING ON HER HANDS!!! THIS IS A PLOT HOLE!! Yes, James; that's the point. That's why everyone in the series calls him "The Jigsaw Killer. "

tbh if someone came into the Saw fandom saying how Jigsaw's philosophy is, like, really insightful and thought-provoking, I'd assume they were a narc. Saw is a gory soap opera and I think most people who enjoy it enjoy it for that reason. That's why we were all so worried when Saw X started getting critical praise for being a "proper movie" - we demand our nonsense.

@@FTZPLTC The range of stories that are told in the Sawverse (Kramerverse?) are really interesting something I think is really interesting, and with it being held together with a telenovela "um actually this person is THE NEXT SECRET DISCIPLE" is hilarious, just like how many different directors have tried their hands with it. It has had such a large impact on the Zeitgeist as a glorious B movie that I am surprised that there isn't a musical production/episode (unless you're counting Devil's Carnival, but there is no reason you should)

My thing with Saw 2 is that every fucking interaction Jigsaw/Kramer has with Donny Walberg is genuinely fucking hilarious. It's the only really truly deeply funny part of the movie because yes, the nerve gas house stuff is just boring and not nearly as hilarious--but fucking Jigsaw looking at that detective like "awww, are you afraid your son is gonna die? AW IS THE DETECTIVE GONNA CRY"--that shit is so funny to me. Just Jigsaw being petty and wanting this detective to beat the shit out of him to me is the entire movie--you can almost skip over all the nerve gas house stuff and just watch the parts with Jigsaw and the detective to know what I mean. He's being the biggest fucking scamp and it's very fun to actually have him mock an easily angered detective for once in the entire series--he stops having these one on one interactions where he's just like "I HAVE YOUR WIDDLE SON DETECTIVE, WHAT'S THE DETECTIVE GONNA DO--AWWW DO YOU LOVE YOUR SON??? THAT'S TOO BAD"--again, I understand disliking the second one for many reasons, but upon rewatch that is the really funny campy part that I can't get over and that makes it a worthwhile sequel just because we have so much less "you little scamp" moments from Jigsaw that are live and actively happening. Like the cops go after the JIgsaw puppet in that and a cop gets his shins destroyed, you can't tell me that's not the funniest shit--but in a binge watch, you probably don't have that realization until you rewatch the second film after knowing what the rest of the series is like. It makes sense this is something you'd need to go back to after swimming in the depths and depravity of all the other Saw sequels... You can really appreciate Jigsaw acting like a little scamp and getting plenty of screen time for once, ya know? He's alive, no one's tricking anyone about whether he's alive or not, things are simpler and he's mocking detectives to their faces and destroying the shins of the boys and blue--my little ACAB heart can't help but sing.

If your friend group is still looking for another very quotable, batshit insane, hypermasculine, extremely longrunning series with a questionable continuity, might I suggest the James Bond series? Going through them recently gave me the same hyperfixation feeling of "I must now tell everyone I know about how strange and silly this series is." Like for example, there's a real scene in The Man With The Golden Gun where the main villain, a guy who has a pistol made of gold, shoots Bond's plane with a giant sun laser and actually says "I am now undeniably The Man With The Golden Gun."

Fun fact-- the woman who cuts off her arm in Saw 7 and one of the women in the car in Saw 3D won a reality tv show called "Scream Queens", which is a two-season show where women competed for a minor role in Saw films. Shawnee Smith was even in season 1 as a mentor. Watched the show on youtube somewhere ages ago; it was buck wild.

This was so fun. I've been interested in the saw plot for its weirdness forever but Im too squeamish to even read the descriptions of traps on the wiki. So this presentation was perfect, and I loved the clips with the friends as well! Honestly ideal way for me to learn more about the saw movies, big fan
