You’re right adverse possession is very rare and is often actually based on a misunderstanding or legal error leading you to believe the land is yours. However, “squatters” do also have rights just living in a property (I believe usually after 30 days but state dependent) as tenants. This prevents landlords from locking people out of said property without notice etc. this doesn’t give the “squatter” the right to own said land, just entitles them to due process which yes can be lengthy and in rare cases abused by people. But landlords/homeowners are also far more likely to have greater resources to start and fight said legal process.
@devonmunn57284 ай бұрын
It's not surprising how something that isn't even that common and/or has a bunch of specific requirements has been overexaggerated or lied about so those who already have a absurd amount of power can't not only retain it but gain unlimited power to crush any marginalized group they can (bonus points if isolated cases with cherry picked facts are in that mix as well)
@jane-mulcahy4 ай бұрын
Yessss the lawyer has weighed in!! Thank you for this. Yeah it seems like adverse possession is what the girl is referencing in that one clip from The Wrong Housesitter? But then the actual premise seems more concerned with the idea of short term 'squatters rights' like you mentioned? And technically the plot isn't even about that because in the movie the girl has Dan unknowingly sign a lease to let her sublet, so they didn't even have to bring up squatters rights at all but did anyway, seemingly out of sheer unprompted contempt for the very concept?? All I know is that in trying to research it I came across a lot of upsetting reddit posts full of people being like "um why do dirty evil homeless people get rights to a precious pure landlord's property just by being there" and I had to call it a day.

All that to say I think thee "Wrong" franchise is drawing their inspiration from somewhere.

@jane-mulcahy also I HAVE to know what your beef is with Adam Rockoff’s slasher book. I love hearing people’s academic lit critiques.
@jane-mulcahy4 ай бұрын
@@alicethemad1613 lol I did originally have a much longer rant about it in the video but decided to cut it short for everyone's sake including mine. Basically in his opening chapter he takes a really condescending, dismissive tone toward the gender-based readings of the genre that were written before him (by women scholars) and attracted a lot of attention (Her Body Himself by Carol J. Clover, various works by Vera Dika, etc.) He couches it in some faint praise but totally dismisses their work as pretentious and overly analytical. Some examples from Rockoff include: "...Vera Dika's Games of Terror: Halloween, Friday the 13th and The Films of the Stalker Cycle, while often brilliant, is sometimes contradictory and a bit too plodding for casual fans of the genre." It's ACADEMIA, Adam. She's an ACADEMIC. IT WASN'T WRITTEN FOR CASUAL FANS OF THE GENRE. "Much has been written on the difference between the deaths of the sexes, how men are killed quickly while the women are forced to suffer. However, it is certainly a stretch to propose that this was ever a conscious choice on the part of the filmmaker. I refuse to believe that, for example, Herschell Gordon Lewis and David Friedman sat around discussing psychosexual paradigms before making The Wizard of Gore." OH MY GOD. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF IT WAS A CONSCIOUS CHOICE ON THE PART OF THE FILMMAKER. NO ONE "PROPOSED" THAT. WE DO NOT CRITIQUE AND ANALYZE FILMS BASED ON THE INTENTIONS OF THE FILMMAKER, BUT ON THE RESULTING EFFECT!!!!!! WHAT A BONEHEAD!!! THIS BITCH HASN'T EVEN HEARD OF DEATH OF THE AUTHOR!!!!!!!!! It's just very anti-intellectual and feels particularly charged to me given that the only writing he makes such a point of dismissing is concerned with representations of gender within the genre, and the scholars he takes aim at are all women. And it stings because not only are they women, these are the women who absolutely laid the foundation of scholarship on the genre! You don't have to agree with their conclusions; many have revisited and at times rebutted Carol J. Clover's writing on the subject, for example. But frankly we would not even have the language to discuss the slasher without the early work of women like Dika, Clover, and of course Barbara Creed and Julia Kristeva. Case in point, Rockoff's liberal usage of the term "Final Girl" in Going to Pieces. This term, now broadly used even in colloquial discussions of horror cinema, was COINED BY CAROL J. CLOVER!!! Rockoff, at least in this book, is so blindly ignorant that he's not even aware of his own field's debt to those he purports to be above.

There is a really REALLY weird amount of fearmongering about squatter's rights that I've noticed has been on the rise within the last few years (likely around the time that investors started buying up any affordable property to flip it into a barely-passed-inspection AirBnB), but then when you look into any of the cases they're often either much more mundane than originally presented or it's not really a squatter's rights issue at all and there are far more factors at play. But I guess the narrative of a squatter terrorizing some poor hardworking family appeals to landlords and people who like to fantasize about making millions of dollars in the real estate market (Also, quite frankly, if you own a property and allow it to sit vacant for 5 years, long enough for someone to move into it and somehow escape your notice in all that time that you could have had them legally removed... maybe you simply shouldn't own it)

Simpson. there’s so much more, but I do believe he’s one of the best examples of what a decade of being on reality TV can do for someone with a bit of unchecked narcissism.

@@sorryimkylayeah, my roommate and I could not believe it when he appeared in this video. We spent a good ten minutes laughing about him being in this. One of the things we mentioned was “Whoa! A worm with a mustache appeared!”

At 34:53 my immediate thought was Friday the 13th Part 2 and I even said it out loud and I was so happy when you said it too. A delightful little echo chamber for me lol. Your analysis in this video is really strong and the jokes were great too. I really appreciate the high-quality captioning for this video as well, the few times I put on the subtitles it was super accurate and helpful.

I said this was going into my rotation and I was fully correct, about 1k of these views are from me and I’ve been putting it on to fall asleep to. Your voice is so good and it’s so engaging yet relaxing and not too serious

Finally it's here!🙌🥳🎉 I had been asking for this ever since I first discovered this channel some years ago. You can say a lot of things about Vivica A. Fox but one thing you can't say is that she's never without a job.

1:25:07 "The Wrong Nanny" 1:25:28 "The Wrong Babysitter" Fun Fact: there actually WAS a Lifetime movie released in 2017 entitled The Wrong Nanny starring Lindsay Hartley, another former soap opera star turned Lifetime movie regular. But like The Wrong Neighbor and The Wrong House, it's not affiliated with the official Wrong series. As for The Wrong Babysitter, there was a Lifetime-esque movie with that title also released in 2017. I don't believe it's ever aired on Lifetime itself, but it follows similar beats and stars familiar faces, but it's again not part of the DeCoteau Wrongverse. Overall, AWESOME video tackling a Lifetime saga that I've always been fascinated by, warts and all. It was cool to see just how many thoughts we have in common for these movies. I even actually enjoyed the Keeping Up With the Joneses series, if simply for how soap opera-esque it was (though I can see why the abundance of "people sitting around discussing things" scenes would bore you)

omg I should have known those titles were too obvious not to exist already. In a way that makes sense- The Wrong Mommy is kind of a weird title/concept- maybe if those movies hadn't already existed it would've been called The Wrong Nanny or something similar

1:06:49 when you said his accent was very fake then played the clip of him talking, I already knew the twist would be the actor is actually British because that accent doesn’t sound fake at all lmao. We’ve got many accents in the UK, which is probably why it struck you as fake if it’s not one you’ve heard before, but that actor sounds very normal tbh

The wrong professor...about being stuck with an awful class because it's the only one available and it's needed to graduate. The professor isn't secretly evil in any special way he's just like a smug asshole who thinks "most kids can't pass" is a flex. Vivica A. Fox can be a counselor
