A RARE look at Merle Haggard in the studio. Thom Bresh shot this electro-film while "Hag" was recording this song. This is NOT a studio mix. It is RAW, just as it came down on the session. It's incredible to watch him deliver the lyrics. This song was thought, by the record label, to be too controversial to be included on his CD. Isn't that called "Censorship"? It is pure, honest, 100% Haggard..

THIS SONG WAS CENSORED... It was originally recorded in 1977 and released on the album "A Working Man Can't Get Nowhere Today". Then it was re-recorded for the CD "Chicago Wind" and set for a single as a duet with Toby Keith. Then the "Suit and Tie" people thought it to be politically incorrect and pulled it as a single. Then the gutless record company, not wanting any trouble, decided to delete it entirely from the CD.. That, my friends, is CENSORED..

i actually know the man who wrote this song. He's 79 years old. The lyrics have been changed a little, but it still sounds close to the original. Merle Haggard bought this song from him for $3500. He played this for me, I can't believe he was telling the truth that Merle actually bought it from him. So awesome. =D

We're not talking about his 1974 release of this song.. That is before "Political Correctness".. Capitol pulled THIS cut off of Hag's CD (Chicago Wind).. It was going to be a duet with Toby Keith. I hate political correctness and ball-less record companies..

If white folks wanted to form an organization called 'The Race' that celebrated white heritage, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, the AFO-CIO. NAAPC, and all other organizations would have a fit, but there's an organization called 'La Raza', which means 'The Race' in Spanish... I don't know about anyone else, but I'm pretty happy with my paint job and proud of my heritage, and that doesn't mean I hate anyone or put anyone else down, either. I'm just a white boy lookin' for a place to do my thang. :-)

I’ve only picked up on this song recently and its good music, and if we still lived in the world Hag and I were born into it would upset no one. Then in the US segregation was very much in force and in Britain here very few black people were resident. But things have changed so much you can’t just put it down to political correctness, non-white people have changed their situation in the world and they object to being blamed for all problems which have come along. Never-the-less I love the song.

If they would have made this a new single it would have been controversial, as it is any time a white person does anything but engage in self-loathing about his identity or heritage. It also would have garnered a ton of attention and sold quite well, so more's the pity for Hag.

It is certainly a relief to have something in the entertainment media which states that it's okay and good to be white. The entertainment media has been so anti-white and it started with the trashy TV shows of the 70's like All In The Family, Sanford and Son and The Jeffersons which featured "Tom Willis" being constantly insulted and humiliated with audience clapping the insults against him.

I don't have a problem either with anyone being proud of their heritage or their paint job, but if Anglo-Americans founded an all white college, or an association that gives scholarships to only white people, or started a 'white heritage month', or started a White Entertainment Television channel, then Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, La Raza, and other "minorities" would throw a fit. I'm sick of having to be nearly apologetic because I'm white.

My boyfriend (who is white) just played this for me last night as we drove home from the movies. All I could do was stare at how beautiful he was and how lucky I felt to have this white boy by my side! Also, what's wrong with the song for it to be banned or not put on a cd? As a black female, I see nothing wrong with the lyrics. I'd post this on my fb page but I know my own race would come after me.

Have the people that take this as an anthem listened to the lyrics? They aren't exactly serious. I think the reason this remake didn't get released wasn't so much censorship as it was that the man who wrote "Irma Jackson" realized what kind of person would take this as an anthem and couldn't stop vomiting.

How is that reverse racism? If you say the saying your a "white boy" is reverse racism, then wouldn't "Black pride" "Black heritage month" and other such terms be the SAME THING??? I have no problem with a black man saying he's proud to be black, saying things like "black and beautiful" and so forth. I respect them having the right to use such terms, so please answer me WHY IN THE HELL WOULD IT BE WRONG FOR A WHITE PERSON TO DO THE VERY SAME THING?????????????

When you say that saying one is proud to be white is carrying a connotation that "white" is better, it seems to be putting words into the mouth of the person who used the phrase. One cannot be certain what reasons any given person may say what they say. A black person could just as easily say "black power or black pride" with the intent that black is better than white. It's all just words, the true intent of the words is specific to the individuals reasons for saying what they say.

We can have the Negro college fund- we can hear things such as black pride- black heritage month- black power- the list goes on and on and those terms are accepted.. our society preaches that one should be proud of thier race and heritage- yet Hag can't say he's proud to be white? I do not understand

If you ain't ever tried it, that's a hard song to sing! But what if it was named, "I'm a Black Man" and said things like, "My daddy's name was Willie Woodrow and I was raised in the middle of the ghetto, ..." etc.? Would that pass muster? Why is a White Boy looking for a place to do his thing racist? Sorry, but I don't get it. Frankly, I've heard a lot more rap songs that were way more racist. Don't ask me to name them, I just hear them when I'm with others that listen to it. I don't seek it out, trust me.
